[New test photos released] Leica Summicron 35/2 Eight Element copy made in China

Usually I add overall contrast in photoshop, because the software scans so flat, but our friend Teddy here (Jose on Flickr) mentioned that the high resolution on this 8-element Summicron (replica) largely supplants the need for a lot of extra contrast (or something like that). So with this shot I wanted to explore the fine detail resolution, albeit on granny film, straight from the scanner w/o the benefit of extra contrast from PS (yellow filter added some contrast). Maybe I just happen to be looking for it now, but the resolution from this lens just seems fantastic. The bokeh is special too.

The older Summicron lenses tended to have very high resolution, such as the Rigid Summicron. The v1 Summicron 35/2 has high resolution and medium contrast.

When I first learned of the replica, I immediately thought of getting such a high resolution lens with fewer age issues.

To add to Raid's description, the early Summicrons did indeed have high resolution, which was most prominent in the central part of the image when the lens was shot at wider apertures. This high resolving power trailed off towards the sides and edges with what I would describe as a unique signature (which I love by the way).

I used to set aside my V1 Summicron 35mm lens until I got a 32 inch high resolution monitor, and I reviewed some of my images that were taken with this lens. The center was very sharply shown in the images. I then started again to use this lens.

If anybody has a replica that wants to sell... let me know! I'm so sad I missed the boat

Daniel, There will be a 2nd series..... but as of yet there are just a handful of forum members who've received theirs..... A lot of us are still patiently waiting, and with each new photo posted on this thread, we continue to drool 😉

I received my test example, black paint on brass, type V1LC. Just a few minutes ago.

Thank you Kevin!

I will do some shooting as soon as possible!

Erik.

Hi Erik,

I am happy to know that you get the test lens today. DHL amazed me again. It only took three days for them to deliver it from China to Netherland.

I am looking forward to your review!

Best,
Kevin

Yes, I had to pay import taxes. I'm living in the EU.

But it is a very nice lens, makes a wonderful pair with another favorite of me: the Color Skopar 50mm f/2.5. They weigh practically the same (50mm 220 g; 35mm 235g including lens hoods), use the same lens hood (the Elmar-M hood in black) and the same lens caps (original Leica black paint on brass caps from the late 1950's) to be used on my BP Leica M2 No. 948639. I'm happy.

Erik.
