[New test photos released] Leica Summicron 35/2 Eight Element copy made in China

Wonderful to see replica lens shots taken on both film as well as digital. Thanks Charles and Raid...all lovely shots!

Question Raid. On that first color image, the top right and left side corners show a intense blue/cyan sky. Was that image taken wide open. If so, the lens vignetting would probably be the explanation.

It may have been created with photoshop. The colors were dull in some images.

Just received my copy. Thanks Kevin!!!

Nicely done, Jon.
Is your lens free of any 4?

No, but I did get an 8 as well, so I guess that cancels it out.

Hi Raid,

Thanks ever so much for the response. I've noticed in my images (as I think you have alluded to in yours) when shooting in overcast light or heavily shaded lighting, there is a predominance of blue/cyan cast in the image. This is especially seen in the corners, especially at the wider apertures. Its simply a characteristic of the lens and may also be so in the original Leica 8 element from my distant memory. The lens has oodles of character as one might expect and there is a lot to explore. I and I'm sure others are just beginning to experience this.

Interesting re the blue/cyan cast. Something to do with the coating type maybe? Anson reported on his website (link below) that there appears to be two variations of single coating - purple and amber.

My lens, which is a reasonably early one has the purple coating. Reasonably early as in it was already manufactured in late January but due to Corona screwing things up I didn't actually receive it until early May. Almost four months delay 😱

Those that already have a lens, what color coating did you get? Purple or amber???

Hey Jon, it is hard to tell by serial. When I did the review there is one in blue/purple coating with serial later than an amber coating both serial number #20X and marked as V2LC.

Thanks for the clarification, Anson. Oh well, I guess I can toss my idea that the serial numbers may tell us something about the coating type out the window lol

Very nice shot!!

Thanks!

With regards to a cyan cast in heavily overcast or shaded lighting that I alluded to in my previous post, my lens has the amber coating. Whether a earlier replica lens with purple/blue coating would have accentuated this, I honestly don't know without having one at hand to try simultaneously to an amber coated one.

It may be that the coating has an impact on the color blue being overemphasized in shots taken in overcast days or in open shade.
The colors differ with my Summicron 35/2. There is no such blue overcast.

It can be adjusted with PS. Not an issue.

the build and feel of this lens is amazing, focus is nice and smooth unlike all other 35mm lenses I've owned (35 cron iv, 35 ultron, 35 2.5 skopar), only thing I find annoying is the infinity lock but getting the hang of it.

took some pictures of our daughter with the lens mounted on my EOS R, surprised to see no color shifting in the edge unlike the 35 ultron.

have the lens mounted on my M3 now and half-way through a roll. looking forward to see the scan/prints once processed.

How do you find using it on the M3 without framelines? Are you using an external finder or just estimating your framing?

I've been following this thread closely since I learned about this lens ~2 months ago (obviously much too late to get in on the first batch) and find myself really wanting one, but not sure how I'd feel using it with my M3 due to the above.
