new work showing up

Cool ... I had checked a couple of times, now I'll go back for a long visit.

BTW, I haven't been able to develop any of the film I've shot since I've arrived in Windsor. Think I'll bring tanks, reels and chemicals on my trip home and back this week.

ah the film conundrum!

as a result of our conversations i went out and picked up a mamiya 7 and a few lenses! now on the hunt for a medium format scanner! i would like to chat about the film to your door bit sometime soon! give me a ring.

Hi John (finally know your name, other than emraphoto :) ), congrats!

Impressive reportage-pieces in that Gaia Photo website. I especially respect this stand (from their About section): "We do not accept celebrity or sports driven features"

Hi Will,

Indeed it was why I wanted so badly to get on the Gaia roster. I have been banging my head against a wall lately trying to get work with some style, craft and global importance run in anything these days. I still to this day get cheques in the mail from a jessica simpson promo job almost a year and a half ago but half to basically beg to get people interested in the stuff out of Nigeria. The work out of Chad is essentially worth nothing.

I have made a commitment to stop answering those calls (AP, CP and the entertainment centric press) and even said no to a fairly lucrative job this past weekend. I am a far happier and will eventually be a far more successful photographer as a result!

Nelson - It is very sad. It also has far bigger implications than folks understand. In the myopic quest for oil revenue the country has allowed all other agriculture and manufacturing to collapse. The agricultural end has a lot of people very, very worried as many neighboring countries have relied on Nigeria for food for a long time. It is the makings of a very large famine happening right now. I am working on returning soon to focus a bit more on that end of the story and it seems a few folks are interested (finally)!

thanx for the comments and interest. it is very, very important to me.

John,

I'll give you a call tomorrow (Tuesday) ... I'm headed to Stratford to pick up my daughter, then on to Roch to spend about a week at home. I'll call you from the road -- right now my brain is in neutral. ;)

Excellent reportage making much of Magnum look like DisneyWorld. THKS for posting and keep up the great work. Paul

Excellent work John. Thank you for posting the link!

As of early 2009, Nigeria had an estimated 36.2 billion barrels of proven oil reserves

The current world oil consumption is about 31.5 billion barrels annually, so Nigeria's proven oil reserves are enough to keep the world running at current levels of consumption for just under 14 months. All that hardship, corruption, grinding poverty, and desperation for an extra 14 months :(

If anyone is interested, Current Vanguard did a short doco about a year ago on the oil problem in Nigeria called Rebels in the Pipeline available on Google Video here.

Thanx for the link. an interesting watch!

It is looking increasingly as though I will be returning soon so I will be sure to keep the work flowing here.

Thanx again for the interest and great link!
