Nex 5 ?

Anybody shooting with this? What kind of P&S shutter lag does it have? Anything fester the he EP-xx's. What is the biggest draw back to the NEX 5?

I'd say the biggest draw back is that there is no EVF option and there are only a few lenses, so far. Sony announced a good looking lens roadmap at Photokina, and I assume that an EVF will be available, eventually. The tilt up lcd is great for waist-level shooting, and you'll enjoy the 1.5x crop factor and low noise/high DR of the sensor. Here is my current setup with the Sony pancake and Voigtlander rangefinder lenses:

I have had the nex 5 for a few weeks now.

Things l like other than what's already mentioned: the Screen (usabel even in bright sunlight), the AI (eg, it can use auto ISO to determine exposure in S and P mode with manuel lenses, and how it dims/lights up the screen in M mode according to your exposure EV), 7fps continuous shooting, the processing power of the CPU. Interesting features like auto pano, and smile shutter (only with kit lens). Wireless remote.

Things I don't like: Shutter feels heavy compared to a GF1 or even some of the SLRs (maybe it's because the body is so small and light that the pull just feels exaggerated). No hot/cold shoe support (Doug, how do you put a cold shoe on yours? btw). No EVF. Some quirky UI issues as not all soft buttons are programmable (I really want the Menu button to be at the bottom and the MF assist on the top). Some lenses cannot collapse into the body. Tend to over expose (although results are salvagable in raw). Tripod thread is on a little extruded knob area, not on a flat surface.

But I am stilling love this little beast despite its flaws.

I for one don't think the NEX is ugly. I like the grip. I have an EP-1 and the shutter lag isn't bad, but noticable, drives me nuts.

i have a few question which the op might benefit from as well:

-is there any shutter lag in manual focus mode?

-can you set the distance in manual focus mode?

-is there custom setting option?

I have a Nex 3 and I think the shutter lag is good. It seems comparable to a Panasonic GH1 I used to have. The focus is surprisingly fast with the lens I have (16mm). That said there is definitely a small touch of lag.

Also how much is the M adapter and where did you get it? I would certainly like the 1.5 crop factor. I think the Panys has the least shutter lag. If it is comparable to that I am sure it would work.

The M adapters are down to 25-30 dollars on eBay from China right now. I bought an NEX-3 (didn't need an IR remote or 1080p video) and have been pleasantly surprised at how much I like it. It's my first new digital camera in almost three and a half years (my 5Dmk1 is still going strong, but I hardly use it these days).

I find the Zuiko 38mm f/1.8 (a half-frame lens from the Pen line) is a great standard lens. The Achilles heel of RF lenses is their lackluster minimum focusing distance, but the Zuiko handles close-ups well. It's also pretty reasonably-priced (for a Pen lens), although I don't know how long that'll last when word gets out to the internet at large 😛

So the Nex3 and Nex 5 has the same IQ? I really care nothing for video either.

Yep, the only difference between the NEX-5 and NEX-3 are:

-body style (NEX-5 is smaller and magnesium)
-optional use of IR remote with NEX-5
-different video recording modes

Jingles_97, I removed the base of my Sony 16mm finder (a screw or two) and used that to mount the Leitz VF.

I've had Panny G1 and GH1 and now NEX5, the shutter lag is comparable enough to be indistinguishable. I haven't looked up actual specs before, but here they are:

wow guys I had a chance to examine one and I am so impressed by its continuous shooting speed from such a small camera! and 1.5x sensor size is very attractive too.

Is it a rival to M8 now? 🙂

In terms of high ISO, the M8 is no comparison. But the M8 is over 4 years old now.

I've only tried one out in a store, but didn't feel any lag at all. The continuous mode is quick and less vibration than any SLR or the M8 if you're into sports. I wouldn't want/need an EVF, but an optical finder would be nice if using out in the bright lights and didn't want to have to tweak the brightness or shade the screen, or if just used to holding up to your eye.

I'm not expecting it to surpass an M8 at anything, but to be a great backup, and still able to use legacy lens at 28 and 35 with no weirdness like with u4/3.
