Nex 7 for Noctilux: How many are considering just for the Noctilux alone?

The Nex 7 does have some problems with certain M mount wides. However, Lenses like the Noctilux should be fine. I own an M8 and have a Noctilux and recently bought a NEX 5n. The focus peaking works great at f1.0, and I love it so much, maybe the Nex 7 can be justified to get even more out of a Noctilux with a higher resolution sensor. The Nex 7 being larger is another plus with a Noctilux attached. I find the 5n needed the bottom mounted battery grip for my Noctilux for better handling.

The big thing here is I get more keepers with focus peaking and the Noctilux than with a traditional rangefinder (I have peaking set on high with yellow). I only wish the NEX was APS C or full frame, but for the price, I cannot complain.

So in Noctilux land on this forum, who is considering a NEX 7 for their lens?

There's very little difference between APS-H and APS-C, one is 1.3x crop factor the other is 1.5x

Great to hear. I have found the focus peaking fairly inaccurate and inconsistent at 2.5, but I haven't tried my faster lenses yet.

I have been using my NEX 5 with both a Voigtlander Nokton 50mm and some fast SLR lenses (Canon 58mm f1.2, Canon 85mm f1.8 etc) and it works terrifically with focus peaking. I have found though that focus peaking does require a little interpretation and the word "peaking" means what it says - with fast primes you have to carefully assess when the color fringing that indicates focus its at its absolute peak - otherwise you can still run the risk of getting a shot that is slightly oof.

If you are lucky enough to have a NEX 7 AND an Noctilux you will be in heaven.

The Ricoh GXR is also rather good when used in it's black and white high pass focus mode with fast 35/50mm lenses. It's like watching a ray of sunlight sweep across the scene as you focus. The effect becomes less and less pronounced with slower and wider lenses.

But the EVF is at it's best indoors - it kind of sucks in daylight and the color mode peaking is not that much use.

I don't know about the NEX7, but I've found the GXR body is too small to handle well with large fast lenses like the 21mm Summilux.
I would imaging the Noctilux even more troublesome, but I would be more than happy to give it a try if I came across a bargin Noctilux 😀

Here is my Noctilux and Nex 5n. I added the Ownuser battery grip to significantly improve handling with lenses like the Noctilux. If I get the Nex 7, I may sculpt a bottom grip out of wood to use until there is an aftermarket Ownuser grip available.

The Ownuser grip quite frankly changes the camera into a DSLR type body. I bought this camera for its high ISO, Leica M mount capability and focus peaking, thats it. IT I had a choice, I wish it was about the size of an M8 but it is not.

the Ownuser grip was $100 on Ebay and I feel well worth it if you intend to mount Noctilux size lenses.

Just do it! I have neither NEX-7 nor Noctilux at the moment (I've an NEX-5), but a Noctilux on an NEX-7 sounds like too much fun to pass up.

I started a debate on the uglyness of my Nex 5n Ownuser Grip Noctilux combo.

Funny how the first thing people say is how ugly the camera is and then talk about beautiful photos the camera made. The NEX is not ugly, but logical, functional, and 21st century in look. Yes, I still like the layout of my M8 better, but let's face it, the NEX 5n has a fantastic price if you use Leica M glass, especially very expensive Leica M lenses. It may seem crazy to mount a very expensive lens on a much cheaper camera, but to me, I wanted better high ISO and focus peaking. The NEX 5n does it. The M8 and M9 cannot. That is a fact.

For those that want to add just a little bit of extra grip, but aren't interested in the battery grip, the various leather half cases work very well, IMO. It basically makes the NEX-5N grip the same size as the NEX-7 grip.

Sorry, the camera is ugly to me (especially with large lenes attached). The D700s I use for commercial work are ugly as well. There's no shortage of ugly cameras.

However, all that matters is whether or not you enjoy using it, and if it meets your needs. Since NEX 5 does both, who cares about the aesthetics of the design? I certainly wouldn't.

Hi, i am also looking at the nex-7.

For reasons of high iso to complement my M9 in low light sitations
and also for precision framing of landscape work.
So the Nex-7 is ideal I'm probabaly going to remove the AA filter of the nex-7 to fully utilize the camera.

I used the nex3 with my RF lenses and they under perform quite often. It is not the resolution it is just that the lenses characters are weaken by the AA filter.

Eleskin maybe AA removal + EVF might give more benefit than the nex7 .

My set up is as such for a full day street project starting in june next year:
M9 + 50 sonnar + nex7 and ZM 25 2.8 with a spare 50 1.1 for low light.
