Like most people that shoot a Summar, I was going nuts trying to figure out which hood to use, and which Leica acronym meant what! All I know is that they all went for a lot more cash than I was willing to part with for a hood. Not exactly the proper Leica attitude, but there it is. After trying a number of things, some better than others, I stumbled onto this guy:

I don't have any connection to the seller, but I did buy one of his hoods and they are just great. Excellent price for a nicely finished metal hood too. I shot it at all apertures, and no sign of vignetting.

I think I need one too. Thanks for the link. I think I've seen this seller before. His web shop is closed at the moment but I think he's the same guy who sells ROR (residual oil remover). It's magic stuff for old and dirty lenses.

looks promising, thanks OP for the information. many original Leica accessories cost silly prices... and Summar definitely benefits from hood 🙂

Old thread, but does anyone happen to know if this hood would with a 35mm lens (specifically the older 34mm Canon 35mm 2.8)? Or would it cause vignetting?

If so, I'm definitely buying one for use with it and my Summar. 🙂

Question... Actually, two questions:
1/ Is this any different to using a Fison on a Summar? I do but find there is vignetting at full aperture so i would be interested in an alternative.
2/ Why is the original SOOMP hood for the Summar so ridiculously expensive. One hood is on offer from an eBay dealer for more than I paid for two Summar lenses. They don;t appear to be rare as there are always several on ebay.
I suspect it is a repeat of the Nooky and Nooky Hesum situation. These close up adapters used - I mean, no more than a couple of years ago - be easy to find for £20 - 35. Now dealers appear to have reached a consensus that they should be selling for around £250. I have never seen one sell for more than a fifth of that price and when they do come up for auction they make often make considerably less than £50. So what do SOOMPs make at auction and is it worth waiting for one.
Sorry, that's three questions.
TIA, Simon

FIKUS adjustable works fine on a Summar. Use the 3.5cm setting -- some are even so marked. That setting also works for Elmar 3.5cm lens, again some hoods are so marked. This lets you have a four lens kit (Elmar 3.5cm, Summar 5cm, Elmar 9cm, Hektor 13.5cm) with just one hood. (But don't try the FIKUS on a Summaron.)

The SOOMP is expensive because hoods get lost, they were an extra cost option, and the "gotta catch 'em all" people all want one. I found a reasonably priced SOOMP, but it took patience.

On the other hand, there's a lot of insane "ask" prices for NOOKY and NOOKY-HESUM, but true auctions reveal sane prices.

I use a FOOKH on my Summar, Canon 35/2.8, Nikkor 35/2.5 and Nikkor 50/3.5. Works a treat, and I even found a plastic Leica cap in my odds-and-ends drawer that fits over the front of the hood.

I have one of these it is great. Highly recommended

Do you see a significant finder blockage with a Leica Screwmount and its internal viewfinder?

Hi,

Mine just arrived and is very nice too: I wish I'd seen this link earlier.

"Do you see a significant finder blockage with a Leica Screwmount and its internal viewfinder? "

The hood's dia. is 39mm and the lens cap for the Summar is almost 39mm so that might give you an idea of the blockage. The lenses knurled ring is about 36mm to give another version.

The hood is so neat and nice it doesn't really bother as most hoods are pretty bad; well, my flea market ones are.

Regards, David

I have used Jack the Hat for odd sized filters before (think Rollie 35), but didn't know he did these hoods too - must invest in one for my summar before the summer gets here

(as if!) 😉

I bought one and can confirm it is a very well made hood for the Summar but there is a major flaw in that you cannot use it with the Leica push on filters which are unthreaded. S

does anyone know if these hoods can still be bought somewhere? a summar is coming my way and i'm looking for a compact affordable (screw-in type) hood. this seems to be the perfect solution for me, but it seems to be out of stock...

I wonder...they do a 40.5mm screw-in hood and the Summarit thread is 41mm.

Anyone tried? Sounds like a slight bend out of shape or a tiny strip of tape would help it to grip???
