I like that San Fran shot. I could never do 1/15 hand held... I've tried. 1/60 is as far as I can go without leaning against something.

Ride, dive, shoot.
A couple more. Both in SF.

Love these Christopher!
Helen, this is a great shot!
So this thing got a name huh - "nightphotography" ?!
This is, what I love the most and do it mainly - don't like the light during the day:
Here is a small flickr set of some late shots, I uploaded on my fresh account "shanghai @ night".

I shoot all night handheld - tried to get used to a tripod on several occasions - never felt right, always got in the way.
I am not setting up, planning or shooting a scene over and over - I wander the night and shoot, what I see - you can't do that with tripods.
The Leica is great for that.
I used to use Nikon DSLRs for that, but somehow they miss the magic. I guess, it's the glass.
Great inspiration. Thanks for the details.

I was leaning up against the SUV that I'd been driving...I took a few shots in the hope that one would be sharp.

I rarely ever post images here, but even rarer than that do I venture out at night with a camera. Not my standard fare, but here you go.

Thanks Pirate - that shot is actually taken on a digital rangefinder, but hope it still counts?!
I recently bought a cable release so I will try some more night photography soon
Cheers

I think it's prudent to practice on a digital camera as there is so much lost to error and chance during night photography. It's a great way to study and learn. Does anyone disagree?

They're great. Are the fireworks of the Hudson River on the 4th?
What camera, film, exposure did you use, may I ask?

My first and untill now try. Delta 100@100, auto mamiya/sekor lens, 1.8, tripod and few seconds of exposures (guessed by me...). Their are not so good as the ones here, but I was a fun to do it.
Fireworks in S.John night celebration last year, seen from on of my house balconies!

They're great, Rhodes My maiden voyage at night were with fireworks, too. You never know what you're going to get.

Thanks again for the comments! I do also shoot with a Braun Paxette film camera but the shutter is on the lens collar and it makes long exposures hard. I recently got a cable release so I will try it on that camera and see what I can do. I am amazed at some of the photos here, lots of great ideas which will get me looking into the darkness in a new light.

Glad, you like 'em Mel ;-)
Benny, I missed to comment on your R-D1 shots - these colors are just great! Nicely framed and especially that 15mm shot looks super!
You master that "slow lens shooting in the night very well" ;-)
Patrick James - give that shootin' another try - I love the belly shot with cut off head a lot - it really is the type of pictures, that are grabbed out of the street and show life - nothing staged. I love that!
