Nikkor 28 f2.8 AIS on D810

Has anyone shot the classic Nikon 28mm f2.8 A.I.S. lens on the Nikon D810 and would like to share their experience?

I'll be starting a project in a few weeks that I originally wanted to shoot on Medium Format film, but there just isn't the budget. I have heard so many great things about the D810 and how it's Medium Format in a 35mm package, but I'm concerned about a few of my older Nikkor optics when paired with it.

So if anyone has shot this combination, I'd love to hear your thoughts and maybe see some results. Just want to make sure the higher resolution sensor doesn't make the optics look like hell.

I own the lens and shoot it on my Df. I have a D800 also but never use primes on it. I'll say the 28 AIs is stellar on the Df and would imagine it would perform quite well on the D800. At f4 it's very good and excellent at 5.6-8. In comparison to other Nikkor primes of that generation is os one of the best. It's light years ahed of the 24's and 35 f2. The 35 1.4 AIs performs very well from f4 and below. The 50mm f1.2 AIs is exceptional from f4 and below. None of the older 20's are great but I have a 52mm version AIs of the f3.5 that's very good from 8 on down.

You might know that the AIs version of the 28mm is different than the AI and non AI and believe it is different from the D version.

How big will you be enlarging? Can you shoot stopped down and from a tripod? With the D800/810 this is critical to bet the maximum out of the camera / lens. Even pre releasing the mirror is a good idea for optimum quality.

I don't own the D810 but my D800 is superb. The beauty of it is not the number of pixels but the amazing 14.5 stops of dynamic range.

I have shot that lens on my D800E.

It's fine, but the corners at longer distances aren't as good as the 28mm f/2 lens, which IMO is the better lens overall.

I'm looking at doing gallery sized prints, 16" x 20"ish.

I appreciate you mentioning the 50mm f1.2 A.I.S. because that is another lens I hope to use with the D810 if I go that route. Along with a 105mm f2.5 AI and an 85mm f1.4D AF lens. Those four are the ones I would mate up with the D810 for this project. Will probably need to stop them all down a bit, but a good deal of the project will be outdoors in natural light, so that shouldn't be an issue.

On my D800 I use G series zooms and a couple of primes. 16-35, 24-70, 70-200 vr2, 85 1.8, 24 pc and 85 pc. On my Df it's mostly primes, 20 3.5 (52mm), 28 f2.8 ais, 35 f1.4 ais, 50 f1.2 ais, 50 f3.5 micro aI, 85 f1.4 D, 105 f2.5 ais, 135 f3.5 ais and 200 f4 ai (2nd version). The 85 and 105 are exceptional. The least performer is the 20 and stopped down its good.

16x20's should be easy for any of these.

I do use 2 zooms that perform very well on the Df. The 75-150 f3.5 and 25-50 f4. I have used the 25-50 on the D800 and it's an amazing lens.
