Nikon announces full-frame mirrorless camera

After shooting my m6 or Xpro2 as daily carry cameras, I simply cannot imagine using a camera that large for anything other than landscape work. Portability and ergonomics have superseded pretty much all else in my photography.

Agree, but M users certainly are not Nikon's target market. For DSLR users the size is probably welcome. See here. Talk about big....

I wonder how easy it would be to adapt lenses to the nikon. No one seems to be talking about that. I don't mind the camera size. I think the size is perfect

I have high hopes that the menu system will best Sony's by a long way, and with significantly better battery life too. I'll get one, eventually. I've never bought anything close enough to launch to be a pre-order. Its not like I don't already have several DSLRs anyway.

I see the 24mp version as being an alternative to carrying my D850 and 24-70.

Weight saving on body is about 8 oz, and 16 oz on lens = 1.5 lb weight savings, and about 1 inch smaller body and smaller lens. (however with adapter and earlier lenses one gives up much of these benefits)

This would also be good for a backup on a shooting assignment - you would then have a body and a lens backup.

And of course it would be good for when you need to shoot with two cameras. I would then pair up body with 70-200 maybe and have body and lens stabilization for low light shots.

As for pre-ordering - I'm lucky to have NPS - so I can wait till I really need it & also so see what the early users think.

A new system like this requires a lot of things going perfectly.

I like the general look of the camera and features. I agree that IMHO there should also be an SD slot. Actually, I'd rather have 2 SD slots.

I was initially excited about the A7 cameras when they came out but then I saw that there were some issues using adapted Nikkors so that excitement wore off quickly. This sort of thing has me wary of these new Nikons.

One other point...this is not the digital F or F2 that I have always dreamed about. So Im thinking a few years down the road, when they fall to a price comparable to what used and new A7 go for now, then I might get on board. Out of the gate...no. Maybe if it had dials like a Df...

These look good to me.

And surely these cameras, with top Nikon lenses, and a 24mp body at these prices are a death sentence for the Leica SL?

Personally, I don't think so. Personally. The user interface on the Leica SL is so vastly different from the Sonys and these new Nikons that those who like the SL's approach are not likely to gravitate to the Nikons. All three of the systems are waaaaay past the standard of sufficiency, and for a lot of people it will come down to usability more than sensor specs. I went from Nikon to Sony mirrorless A7 gen 1 and gen 2, because I got tired of waiting for Nikon to do a professional level mirrorless. After using the SL, I sold the Sony's immediately and would never go back to the way the Sony's operate, even though the files are nice.

Still, I was looking forward to the Nikon announcement, and I wish them well, but they are laid out too much like the Sonys for me and seem more like Sony competitors than direct competition to the SL. Specs are great, I get that, but it's just not enough for me. Personally.

I was ready and would have placed a preorder for one of the Nikons this morning if I had thought it would have served my needs and wants more than the SL, but it just looked too much like a better Sony, and not a better SL, to me.

The Leica is sort of in a different market, it seems. I doubt those people, most of them, are going to jump at this.

But, who knows.

The announcement really makes me appreciate Fuji and its recent small lens designs. I know the sensor size makes a difference, but still...

Those massive Fujis really make me appreciate my M43 Oly EM10Mk2 with it's tiny prime lenses.

I know the sensor size makes a difference, but still..

;)
