I finally got my F3...

In the 70's I started with a black F2, but I moved up to a F3P and then loaded up on more F3's. At one point I had 3 F3's so I didn't have to change lenses, downsized to only the F3P again, and later bought a F3 HP because it was in like new condition for no money ($150.00). Then I stumbled into a rare black DE-1 in mint shape at a great price, so I bought a black F2 to make a F2/DE-1.

I love Nikon F3's, but to me Nikon's most sexy camera is the F2.

The first time I saw an F3 w/MD-4 I fell in love...for me it's the sexiest ever Nikon...my remaining F2a is a black body...it's pretty...just not sexy...😀

The F3HP I recovered in goat leather is mighty sexy.

My F3P which was a real press camera is muy macho with its brassing and MD-4, especially because of the AH-4 Handstrap. LOL.

You are right F3's are also sexy, but for me the F2 was first love. LOL.

I just paid for a Nikon F2S in black, the seller said he'd ship it this afternoon and I asked him to opt for rush shipping.
Trivia: In bahasa Indonesia, we have a saying 'bekas perang' to describe heavily used and brassed cameras. Bekas = used, and perang = war. Used in war.
Anyway, please see below, pics from the seller:

P.S. Cal, I wouldn't have said anything about the F2 if you didn't say it was the sexiest. 😛

That is a very pretty camera. The brassing looks awesome.

The F3P I own was a real press camera owned by the Long Island newspaper "Newsday." I bought this F3P just after it got overhauled by Nikon when they were located in Garden City. The camera had just returned from covering "Operation Desert Storm." My brassing is kinda light compared to yours.

Anyways it is always great to have legendary cameras that one can shoot and treasure for the rest of one's life. Mint cameras are one thing, but well used cameras that display unique character to me have mucho value added. They have what I call "Mojo."

Thanks Cal.
In my short analog adventure, brassed and used cameras always get more love from me compared to minty ones. I am so excited, waiting for the delivery guy to ring my doorbell. I even ordered a strap to go with it.
I wonder if old style thin strap, like original Nikomat straps is comfortable enough for F2/F3 with prime lenses and occasional motor drive? What is your experience?

Well 2 years ago I was in the market for a F body. I have a friend who sells vintage cameras and I went to visit him, I was doubting between the F, F2 and F3, but went for the 2. Just by reading this topic I'm starting to regret that, allthough I'm super happy with the F2, and getting my F next week, my next camera definitely is an F3, especially after seeing "The secret life of Walter Mitty", which features the F3/T.

Cal's F3 with goat leather and his F2 with the standard prism and 45mm P lens are two of the sexiest cameras that have ever been to our meet-ups... and that is saying something when almost every type of Leica has been there too.

John,

Thanks. I own 4 Leicas, modern ASPH glass, and some cool retro single coated glass. For me the Leicas are really the best for 50's and wides, but SLR's for close focus, macro, normal lenses, telephoto lenses, and for fast action SLR's rule.

For me the F2 (all mechanical) and the F3 (because it was especially made for hard use with a motor drive) are the pinicle.

Among the cameras I use is a motorized, beater, black F2AS.
However, I only use it for taking photos. Having sex with it just doesn't interest me.

I wonder if old style thin strap, like original Nikomat straps is comfortable enough for F2/F3 with prime lenses and occasional motor drive? What is your experience?

My preference on most of my cameras is a wrist strap. I tend to carry a camera in my right hand all the time so it is at my side and kinda low profile. The only time I use a neck strap is to carry a second camera bandelier style because I tend to carry two cameras and don't change lenses.

On my F3P I modded the metering so that the light goes on anytime the meter is activated, and I like this even for day shooting because it makes the LCD display easy to read, but this requires a MD-4 motor drive to supply power because otherwise the battery drain is too severe.

Nikon makes this AH-4 "Hand Strap" that makes carrying a heavy camera like wearing a glove. I find that a heavy camera on a neck strap to be tiring, but realize I am a skinny Asian with a rather unusual thick muscular neck from carrying heavy cameras. Also know that my F3P with MD-4 and AH-4 clearly is an aggressive deadly weapon that is carried in plain sight. Also from carrying a rigged F3P this way all day know that my right arm grew kinda supersized and is a lot more muscular and it almost looks like I'm deformed. The difference in the size of my arms is very obvious.

Because I owned a Noct-Nikkor I learned that a heavy camera is a steady camera, but also realize that one person at the NYC Meet-Up calls most of my cameras "Monsters," LOL. Two of my Leicas (0.85 black paint MP & Wetzlar M6) resemble Nikon F3's rigged with a MD-4 because of being permanently rigged with TA Rapidgrips and TA Rapidwinders. Since I generally tend to carry two cameras all the time I protect the second Leica by carrying it in a book bag where it is out of sight.

I suggest trying to secure one of those rare black DE-1's for your F2. Only about 10% of the DE-1's ever made were black. A F2 body with a DE-1 is mighty small. The body is only a little longer than a M-body, but it is shorter than a M-body if you discount the small hump made by the DE-1. The build quality of the later F2's rivals the quality of Leica M3 single strokes. At Nippon Camera Clinic one of the techs there told me like Leica Nikon continually upgraded the F2 and the later ones like your "S" are the good ones. Note that the 45/2.8P AIS does not have "rabbit ears" so it will not work on a F2 with any metered prism, but will work only with a DE-1.

The 45/2.8P AIS is a small pancake lens that is a Tessar. I highly recommend it for street shooting. It can close focus, but the real advantage is the short focus throw which makes for a fast focus. On a F2 with DE-1 the 45/2.8P is an optimized rig for fast street shooting. Understand that twice as many silver versions were made than the black versions. For me the black version is the one that looks right on a black paint brassed in camera. I bought my black version at KEH for $360.00 which was a great price. You don't need the hood. An alternative is a 45/2.8 GN, but IMHO I think the 45/2.8P AIS is the cooler/better lens. You can't go wrong in my book paying a small premium for rarity of collectable value. I made more money selling or trading gear that lost money for this reason.

Here in NYC I don't see many people shooting old pro Nikon SLR's, but shooting one kinda makes a powerful statement about both you and the camera as being "die-hards."

I just want to let you know that your F2 inspires me.

A thin strap is uncomfortable with an F-3 tricked out with an MD4, a firing rate converter, and a larger lens. It will work with a 35 and a 50, but not as well with a 180 or a 300. Upstrap makes a nice one that won't slip off your shoulder.

Hi Cal, thanks a lot for your kind response, insights and suggestions. So glad to know that my F2 brings a positive note to this great thread. Apologies for others that we talk about the F2 for a while. 🙂

So I received it late last night (about 10.30PM) and upon unboxing I found that the plastic thing on the left side of the finder broke, due to careless packaging and shipping. It was actually in a very bad shape I didn't want to bother with a cleaning session, let alone a test roll. I noted some things that needed to be addressed, but that's it.

This morning I rushed to my usual repairman, who inspected the camera and confirmed it is working well, speeds are alright, the meter is not working, and basically nothing wrong with it other than it had lead a very hard and long life in a humid tropical country with almost no proper care.

So we finished with the repair and I hung out with my friend the shop owner I posted a few days ago, and he had a slew of Fs and F2s. A few of the have the DE-1 in black, so I get what you mean about its size and overall beauty. I also read in Cameraquest that confirmed your 1:10 black:silver DE-1 production.

Heavy camera is steady camera, I agree completely, and might I add, also more comfortable. With a normal lens I feel like I'm pinching the body with my middle finger so you can feel it after a few hours. I do understand that motor drives for F2s are loud and heavy so I am not sure I'm going that way. The DE-1 finder sure is a more interesting route to me.

Also thanks for the 45P AIS suggestion, black to match brassed black, hood is not a must, and worth to pay a premium for rare/collectible pieces. - big thanks for the last piece.

Lastly, judging from the avatar, you look cool hahaha. And you're also the same age as my father, I just realised that.

Take care my good Sir, and enjoy your awesome rig in good health.

If this is a respond to my Q about strap, first off, thank you. I have fitted my F3 and F2 with a cotton canvas made, about 1" width, made locally by my friend. I rarely use any tele lenses, and for now it works nicely.

If I wanted a body for use with a motordrive the F3 is a much better, more elegant, better intergrated design. The F3 truely was designed with using a motordrive in mind.

My avatar was the result of the guys at the NYC Meet-Up decorating me like a Christmas tree after a Meet-Up. LOL.

I am missing an F3 so can I have some advice from the experience in the thread please?

I am looking at the P version, just like something a bit different. I note several listed as P version and with the correct P prefix serial shown but they have a threaded release. Other features are "right".
I know the original release was rubber covered but is now likely to be worn or perished and indeed I have seen them with the release showing through with no thread. I am confused 😀 as all sources say they had a non threaded release.
I also am confused about the backs. I see some with the motor drive bump for want of a better description, that stops at the base plate and others that extend down. Googling has not produced the desired answer, again input please.

( I already have F2,F4,F100, in SLR and three bodies in the rangefinders BTW )
