Nikon F5 custom function

Here is the scenario. Nikon F5 with a manual focus ais lens (105 2.5 in particular). I am aware that matrix metering does not work. The camera defaults to center weight. There is custom function 14 that allows you to choose various center level modes. There is also full frame average.

Has anyone tried full frame average and does it come close to matrix metering? I have not tried it yet but I am curious to see if someone has tried it and how it performs.
