Can a pano on a 35mm film that is 66mm wide be scanned without stitching by a Nikon LS5000?

No. You will need a medium format film scanner like the Nikon LS9000 or a good flatbed, otherwise you need to stitch.

With the LS5000 you do have to stitch.

When I use the Ls5000 for xpan negatives, I use the FM-3 film holder
which I had cut out the spacer {just one}.

You scan one half then the other half and stitch using a stitching software
{I had from a software bundle } or Photoshop.

I now use the LS9000 and wet mount. It is a pain but well worth it,
{you really see what the xpan can do}.

I had heard that HP made a 35mm scanner that could handle pano frames like Xpan, Horizon or Noblex. And what about the Minolta 5400 did any of these alternatives to the Nikon scanner?

No, the Minolta 5400 will only scan 24x36 - I have a spare film holder which I removed 2 of the vertical spacers. I scan the film twice, once from each side, then blend in Photoshop.
