Hi,
Lat week I was in one of my local camera shops and bought a secondhand Nikon Coolscan III (LS30). Got it home, downloaded the latest software and firmware from Nikon plugged it in and fired up the PC. Windows XP found the scanner and was happy with the latest drivers from Nikon. However, as soon as I try to scan anything either through the Nikon program or Paint Shop Pro, PS etc, the scanner modules starts and then tells me the device is not ready. To cut a long story short, I have tried it on 4 PCs and through 4 different SCSI cards all with the same error on XP. I thought it might be a damaged scanner but if I run it on a machine with Windows 98 loaded, it works perfectly.

I have spoken with the shop and they are going to raise the matter with Nikon when the offices open today and have offered a full refund if it is not compatible with XP. However, this does seem a little odd as Nikon specifically list XP drivers on their website. Has anyone else had a problem with this scanner or can anyone offer a solution?

I remember reading an article saying that old Nikon scanners need Adaptech ASPI32 driver (freely available from adaptec.com).
If you have Vuescan or Silverfast, the scanner should work without Nikoscan.

Glad to hear that it worked. 🙂
I second vuescan even for slides; being able to make a profile from an IT-8 target and use it alone can justify the cost.
Plus it doesn't cost arms and legs.

My Nikon CoolScan IV ED with Silverfast does hang more often since I got XP 🙁 It seems the Twain module and XP are not the very best friends. Under Win2k it worked more stable.

Cheers
