Nikon to enter FF market in Sept 2011

Again while all speculation, it is a bit fun. The rumor pool is all over the place again on the net over a new Nikon mirroless. I don't know why anyone would thing or expect Nikon to produce any mirror system with the expectations of high IQ and geared towards pros regardless of market hype. I think the P7000 is a great example of where Nikon stands on IQ, build and market placement.

Lot of the comments coming from people the guess is everything from the new camera being a higher level CoolPix to a full blown digital rangefinder even going as so far as to refer to it as SP-D or and the MX format again.But the rumor mill is all over the place with a 2.5 cf so I doubt it is going to be anything to compete against the Leica M8, 8.2 or 9. No way do I See this as even a second or third camera to tag along my D3s' or even my X100 (if I my pre-order ever ships, or arrives w/o a bad viewfinder alignment!)

Of course when it comes to anything Nikon in the small camera arena, the new P7000 fails to even be half the camera as the G11, and the new P300 lacks across the board in it's competition with the LX5. and, I just don't see any other pro taking any mirrorless camera seriously as an alternative to a P&S even as a second body with anything less than APS-C. Sorry, but when it comes to sensors, size still does matter.

I expect Nikon will once again drop the ball regardless if this rumor proves true or not.
 
Nikon's factory where they make all their pro bodies is down and not producing anything at the moment. I doubt we'll see any announcements for a while. A D700 successor was almost certain to be released before the end of the year, but if it were in production it's just been held up.

I don't see where they actually said something was going to happen? I think the OP came to that conclusion himself.... They have however predicted almost every single nikon DSLR and compact over the last 2 or so years before they're announced...

So then what happened at this event:

They originally didn't list that something was going to be announced - they merely reported that nikon was having a press event.

Later, they updated the post to say this:

Update: the event in Taipei was for the already announced Coolpix cameras – see this report for more info.

Actually, I have been using Nikon FF cameras dating back to the fifties.😀 In fact, all the Nikons I presently own are FF cameras.🙂 When I first saw this thread, I was thinking it must be an old one indeed.

I actually posted this thread after the so-called Taipei event was slated to take place, and to date no new announcement, though I do recall DPReview had stated they predicted Nikon to make all sort of announcements at the end of March. Also, I do not take much stock in NikonRumors either as they have been making this prediction for a year now.

They also were the ones who started the whole MX format that was slated to be a medium format digital rangefinder. Then again last year they said the D700s/D800 and D400 would be out by December of 2010. Again, nothing. The rumor are more fun than anything else.

Clearly, I do not see any mirrorless system as being geared towards professionals if its sensor is the size of a coolpix or smaller than m4/3. This rumor of a mirrorless has been around for ages and I still don't think Nikon is going to do it. And if they do, just like the P700, I expect they will completely miss the mark.
 
I think you'll find that they will do it - I read an interview with a Nikon guy not long ago stating they would indeed enter the mirror-less market, but I completely agree with you in that I think they will totally miss the mark and make some really flawed system from the get go.

Now, there's two big rumors floating around for this:

1. Nikon's bringing a professional mirror-less system to the table - whatever that means. Probably magnesium body, weather sealed and fast lenses.

2. Nikon's bringing a 2.5x crop system to the table - which is at odds with the professional thing - I can't see many pros forking out for a tiny sensor digital camera, even with interchangeable lenses.

Closer to the Mid 90s with the E-series digital camera. The D-1 was a throwback to the 1.5x crop factor. The E-series used optics to reduce the image circle of the lens to a smaller sensor, but did not crop the image circle.

Isn't the Coolpix line already in the "mirror-less" market? Or is this just a ploy to make them de-facto collectible, by changing the marketing term?

These Nikon marketing guys just finding opportunities to make "short-run" cameras, don't they? 😉
 
The E3 series cameras are very rare, mine is SN 67. Probably less Nikon E3's than there are Nikon I's. The E3 will never be a collectible, but mine gets a lot of use in documenting my camera projects. It works with my SB-29 flash, the only Digital Nikon series that will.
 
I've been bending Nikon engineer ears about a fx rf for years. When I mentioned maybe making it with an M mount, they gave me a good look then laughed their heads off. This 'could' be one of my dream cameras without a doubt.
 
Well, here it is 06-APR and Nikon's big announcement was just the D5100. Big fizz, no big deal, another mid-range dSLR. As expected, no Nikon EVIL. And I still don't expect there to be one, at least to any time soon.
