Have used my Nikon 9000ED and NikonScan 4 for many negatives in all sizes, and types. Today, I tried scanning a 60 yr. black and white negative. It is about 6x8 cm in size. The Preview Scans turn out fine, and I can crop ok. But when I scan finally, it turns up as a negative image. I have done it 3 times now with no success getting a positive image in PS or Lightzone. In between, I scanned a 6x4.5 strip with no problem.
I must be doing something wrong, but can't figgure it out. Any ideas ??
This is what it looks like...

I have seen this behavior only a few times in scanning 35mm in the 35mm holder for my 9000. I would preview an entire "row" of 5 images (I cut 5 frames per strip), and they would all preview fine. Then I pick one to scan, and occasionally it would create a negative image like yours. If I worked only one frame at a time (preview, then scan) it would be fine.

I never tried to figure out why it did that, but I only do one preview/scan at a time now if this re-occurs. My hunch is that by previewing a series of frames, Nikon Scan gets confused with the positive/negative setting, and decides one of the frames is a positive.

If your workflow is already one frame at a time, then doubt this helps you, other than knowing others have experienced the same thing.

hmmm...

hmmm...

I have used a Nikon CoolScan 9000ED for several years with 35mm and 120 even up to 5x12 cm in two passes. I have never experienced this particular problem. I do single and batch previews and single and bath scans without difficulty. What holder, and mask, are you using for the negative? In particular, is the negative being held as flat as possible? Is the negative damaged? Are you maximizing the scan resolution, i.e. 4000 dpi, or using a smaller scan resolution? What computer are you using, I use a Mac, and how much RAM does it have?

I hope I won't offend but I downloaded your 'submission' and opened it in PS CS4. With some manipulation, I was able to get a positive image but the image is ODD! In particular, the child's probably light-colored dress is completely black in the front! I interpret this as indicating that there is no silver in the emulsion in that area. Is the negative damaged, or severely underexposed, in that area?

I attach my 'research.'

Bingo !

Bingo !

Maybe a stupid suggestion, but is ice accidentally on?
Maurice

Not that stupid at all, Maurice ! Actually, a brilliant suggestion, I think.
I went back and turned off the "ICE" and it solved the problem. Interestingly, I thought I had successfully scanned other "B+W" frames in between, but realize that they were XP2, and thus, they scanned fine despite ICE.

BTW, that is a picture of me when I was 2 (?). So...as I recently turned 61, I think the negative has held up rather well !

Thank you all.

Glad I could be of help.
This afternoon I happened to be showing my children and granddaughter old photo's of myself 1937 through 1942 (pre WW2 in Holland and from 1940 on in the U.S.) to their delight.
