Agree with you. I suspect the old version will go up in price anyway. I was a bit disappointed with Cosinas "updates" over the last years and I fear it is just happening again.

We will know more once first samples come around. Let´s hope its nor "corrected" to death like the 50/1.1. (I also prefer the excellent 50/1.5 Nokton anytime...)
 
much as I still wish for a stanley kubrick-esque f1.0 or faster 35mm lens (which some knowledgeable types on RFF have assured me isn't really feasible with a 35mm M-mount camera), after thinking it through I'm mostly just grateful that cosina are still offering such a unique lens, and are in fact pushing the boundaries a bit further yet again (with a more compact size and unique <0.7m close focus abilities for a lens of this type). I like my current 35mm f1.2 lens so much that for the last year or so I've considered buying a second one as a backup, so when I heard of the big nokton going out of production a couple of months ago I was pretty distraught. I'll be very keen to hear how the new one performs - if it can hold it's own, guess I'll pretty soon be tying a 0.5m long peice of string to my m7 🙂

Why must CV lenses be regarded as cheaper alternatives to other M-mounts?

Quite frankly the CV's can hold their own regardless of price. If you want your work to look like it's been taken with a Nokton 1.2, then you're going to have to shoot with a Nokton 1.2. Brand names shouldn't mean anything to the serious photographer who is concerned about their final product.

My understanding is that the dealers in the US upped the price. Not the manufacturer.
 
I agree Neare. Leica and Zeiss lenses are generally technically better than CV in brickwall / corner tests... that is fact. However, the CV offerings are also great and are worthy alternatives. Since they came out, I find no need to buy new Leica anymore (though I may buy vintage Leica and new Zeiss as well).
 
I think this is great news.

Coming from a different perspective, i'm using CV lenses on a NEX and the close focus restrictions have always been the bugbear for me. In everyday use my 35 f1.4 is great, save for that 70cm close focus (and manic distortion, well 'character'!). The extra 20cm would help.

This is a perfect normal lens on the NEX and i shall be queuing up to purchase one.

Anyone know when they're due out or the prices?

You have to compare them directly to what Leica offers new at 1.2 and 1.5... then they are still a value.
 
I think the best thing about this new lens is the close focus. Waiting to see how the distortion and bokeh is. Looks like a great new lens, destined to be a classic among RF lens like the LTM 15/4.5 which also focuses to .5m.

Well, just an uninformed opinion really. However, I thought the reason the first one was discontinued was due to unavailability of certain parts. Has anyone ever succeeded in changing a lens' design and keeping the draw exactly the same?

Sure, but the price increase is still there. 50/1.5 was $350 not too long ago. The 35/1.2 around $700.

Value when compared to leica lenses of similar speed? yes

Still a value when compared to what the exact same cv lens used to cost? doubtful

My point is that they have went up based on the fact that they are great lenses and are no longer made. Sure, you can get a leica lens for cheaper, but not an equivalent lens cheaper. While they have gone up in price (as most things do when time goes by, currencies fluctuate, or things become rarer and are still sought after), that does not mean they are not a bargain or value for the M mount camera user. They just aren't as cheap as what they used to be. Then again, I don't bitch about gas increases, grocery cost increases, or postage stamp increases either. Increases in price happen all the time and they will continue to happen. However, these lenses are still a great value for the money regardless of what they used to cost.

I do not disagree as to the reasons that the prices have gone up.

If my gas, groceries, and postage stamps increased in price by the same percentage as these lenses, I would be rather miffed.

They are solid lenses, but personally (and we are each entitled to our own opinions, naturally) I would not call them a bargain at current prices. That said, and again in my own personal opinion, I believe that other cv lenses certainly still are bargains, such as the 35/2.5.

All said and done, every cv lens is pretty damn solid.

And on a lighter note, Tamarkin has some good buys on voigtlander lenses in their screw mount section. Mint chrome 50/1.5 at $350 that somebodoy should snap up as it is reasonably priced. 😛
