Noam Chomsky ... again!

I think the Rollei is a fine choice for such an endeavor. Perhaps an F2.8 model for the extra speed in lower light if his office is dim. Is his office photographically appealing? A wide environmental portrait is ideal then. If not, tight crop it is 😀. Have fun!

All this anti-semitic accusing reminds me of this thing I read the other day.

"The San Francisco Chronicle put it this way: “Regent Dick Blum said his wife, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., ‘is prepared to be critical of this university’ unless UC not only tackles anti-Jewish bigotry but also makes clear that perpetrators will be punished.” The lawyer Ken White wrote that “Blum threatened that his wife … would interfere and make trouble if the Regents didn’t commit to punish people for prohibited speech.” As campus First Amendment lawyer Ari Cohn put it the following day, “Feinstein and her husband think college students should be expelled for protected free speech.”"

Isn't MIT in California?

What a fun thread! I like the technicolor fonts, like looking at a 1990's web site.

Raid, best of luck, and congratulations on scoring a second interview with a noted intellectual. I didn't see in all the back-and-forth any discussion as to how this came about? I will assume that you said something that got his interest?

On the photographic side, maybe a portrait lens is overkill, since you will presumably be in close quarters in this office; I would think a 50 or the 35 would serve better. As to the camera, I would worry more about failure than square vs rectangular format - which machine do you have more faith in?

This is a portrait question.
Use a camera and lens that you are very familiar with.
Think of your most successful portraits.
Carry the minimum.
Have a back up.
The Rollei is a wonderful camera.
I am vey slow using one!
Use a faster camera.
A Leica-M Digital plus maybe a M body with HP5+.
Go with a 50mm lens, don't use maximum apertures so as to get some depth of field.
35mm lenses are wide angle, as is the normal lens on a Rollei.
There is distortion.
The 90mm is ideal.
Make a great portrait.

Some people get over-excited about issues that should not be annoying or insulting to anyone here.

I will take it easy, and I will show you the results if I manage to take some photos then. I am also meeting some well known Professor at Harvard University on our research projects, and maybe also a well known Professor at U of Massachusetts at Amherst. They are well known scholars, and it is a thrill to meet with them for some discussions.

Your feedback is appreciated, regardless of some unpleasant accusations in some comments here and there.

For sure an interesting opportunity and a good photographic "exercise ". Now, about communication and interaction: Rolleiflex is ok but I would bring the 250 Land with an FP 3000iso film in it...a few window shot for him, a few for you...
Just my idea, robert

Hello Robert,
I still have not used the Lan Model 250, and I do not ahve any B&W ilm for it either. There is time to do both by December, but I am hesiatnt to try something totally new here. Maybe I should!

Ciao.

Randy

Not really, Randy. The title of this thread seems to be unacceptable to him. He suspects that I am one of those people who try to infiltrate Chomsky's ideas into RFF ....

Thank you for this lens-based comment!
I am tempted to use my M 4/3 camera with the Zeiss Planar 45/2. The view is that of a 90mm lens. Maybe this is my back-up for my Roleiflex TLR?

Look Raid. Politics aside, the man is worth more than a camera phone. I like the idea of the TLR MF camera. Whatever you use post your images & I promise to keep it on subject.

Glad to hear you're settling on the Rolleiflex! These days people -- even people like Chomsky who are used to being photographed and are old enough to remember a time when a Rolleiflex wasn't an oddity -- simply respond better to a TLR than any SLR, Rangefinder, mirrorless &c. They become both at ease and interested and that makes all the difference. Looking forward to seeing the pictures
Indeed. You might not be able to shoot off a whole film, Raid, but, I wouldn't lose hope of possibly being able to make a couple of images or so because the presence of a Rollei may be an asset on the day. I don't want to buy into the whole "photographer v the equipment used" dialogue (I find it so tedious), however the reality is that in 2015, if you turn up to do a portrait with a Rollei, any intelligent person is left in no doubt that you are reasonably serious about making images of decent quality and not just a snapshot.

I do not know enough about Mr Chomsky to have an opinion about his politics or his values (although I might do some reading to educate myself). But I confess, I am really looking forward to seeing some black and white images from your 2.8D, Raid. I have a 2.8D Xenotar myself that I will have to get around to sorting out one of these days. And I've long felt it's the prettiest of all the Rollei TLRs, (large 80mm lenses, metal levers, meterless purity, etc.).
Cheers,
Brett

Hi Raid,
I agree with the comments above, take your Rolleiflex loaded with black and white film; I'd love to see the results and I think Professor Chomsky would enjoy the experience. I'd try to anticipate how you'll position the shots too, seeing the Rollei viewfinders can be tricky to use to obtain the desired angle in some situations.
I'm an enormous fan of Professor Chomsky, and I'm very envious that you get the chance to meet him (again!). Great opportunity in many ways - good luck!

Rolleiflex with EFKE 400?

Rolleiflex with EFKE 400?

I have decided to go with my Rolleiflex TLR; either the 2.8D or the Tele model with its 135mm Sonnar. I have emailed Dr. Chomsky's office manager (Bev) about my intend, and I asked her if he gets irritaed if I were to use up 5 minutes from my allotted 30 minutes for a portrait with my 1955 Rolleiflex. They have both been very nice to me last April, so she will tell me soon if I am OK here or not.

I may order some fresh 120 film, but I have tons of 120 film in the freezer. I am thinking of EFKE 400, if I can find one roll. If I were "craze", I would opt for AGFA 25 with a monopod.

Thank you. I am in fact going that route with my plans. A classical MF camera with the goal to get one very nice portrait of N. C.
