Non-Leica Lenses

Good thought.
I've seen the f1.8's for under 150, and that would probaly be a good lens to trash as a starter. I don't really just depends on how soon I have enough money to do all this, and what I see on KEH, Ritz, and eBay.
 
Jupiter 8 50/2.

Minolta M-Rokkor 40/2.

Any CV lens.

Any Carl Zeiss lens.

And then there must be a few other brands too. Even Leica. 🙂
 
Well right now I just want a lens that requires no adapter.
So M mount only.
I'm still not sure what lenses deal with that but, right now I am checking out a lot of diffrent options.
Still I am ever hoping for a chance Summicron to show its head for me.

The Minolta M-Rokkor 40/2 is the same as the Leica Summicron 40/2 but costs $100 less.
 
Keep in mind, that if the camera has framelines for 35 or 50, a 40 falls in the middle and depending on lens/camera combination may bring up the 35 or 50 lines.. So you'll need to know beforehand whether you're comfortable with the mental adjustment for the different field of views between lens and finder.
 
Galt, an LTM lens with an M adapter can be treated just like an M lens. I had an M3 with five lenses, all LTM, and three adapters. This suited me as one lens was never used and another was used seldom. Of course the adapter will add to the cost if it is not sold with the lens.

Personally I wouldn't suggest the 40mm lenses (while they are all very good lenses) on an M2 because of the lack of a 40mm frameline - especially for someone new to Leica M's. It's a different story on an M3 where you can use the whole finder or on the post-M4-2 cameras where the "35mm" frameline is a 40mm frameline.

My choices would be:

Konica Hexanon M 50mm f2
CV 50mm Nokton (f1.5)
Beat up old 50mm Summicron with minor glass marks.

or if funds are really tight a Jupiter 8 (50mm f2)

or for 35mm
Any one of the 3 CV 35mm f2.5's (pref. the M mount PII version)
Any of a variety of old 60's vintage 35mm f2.8 screwmounts.
 
Indeed, if you keep looking you can find bargains. I got a nice rigid cron at a camera fair for €99 just as the seller was scribbling the "1" off the €199 tag.

And just this week I got a battle-scarred but fully functional M4 for €480. BTW if anyone else is in Amsterdam they also had a decent looking rigid cron with hood for €225 (couldn't see the condition of the glass) - this was at Foto Professional on the Nieuwendijk .

That is the worst case scenario for bokeh, all that light through leaves. No lens will pass that test, not your Nikkors or any Leica.

Well I do enjoy the 35mm lens family.
That one in a $24 dollar f2.8 35mm Non-AI from back in the day, (Chrome and all)
Flea markets are a blessing.
