I never thought I would do it.
Have you ever watched an auction on fleabay on something that you would only get if it were dirt cheap, but don't necessarily want? You know, one of those that you only bid on because you just couldn't let one go that cheap. And maybe you sort of wanted something but could never justify the current prices for that particular camera.
Well, recently there was such a Canonet III 1.7. I was watching as I found it in a seller's list for something else entirely that I was looking for. I put in a ridiculously low bid just at the last minute (dirty sniper!) knowing that it was going to shoot up a lot in the last few seconds to a fairly high price, more than I wanted to pay. It didn't. Now I have one on the way.
It wasn't very well described, so I may not be happy when I get it,. But for $40, I guess I can take the chance, and sell it for parts if not satisfied.
Francisco, see what you started some years ago! Help! Well, anyway, now I have to wait and see what I get. Who knows, I may get the bug like Francisco and others.

that's how I got my Contax IIa with Sonnar 50/1.5... I put a bid in on it just because nobody else did, fully expecting it to jump $200 or more in the final 5 minutes.. it didn't, and I ended up with a nearly mint camera (and the glass is crystal clear) for just over $200
congrats on the Canonet.. if it's rough, but in working shape, you can always have g'man take a look at it.. the lens is superb!

Yeah, that was what I thought, either Greyhoundman or perhaps impose of Brian. Anyway, a moot point until I see it. I am hoping because I am starting to look forward to it.

I would suspect yours will need a shutter blade cleaning too like mine two canonets!

I have been following some of the repair threads here and recordig their url's. Still, I usually feel like I have nothing but thumbs and am blind in both eyes when it comes to working on cameras. Well, I will just have to wait patiently (as possible) until it arrives. Who knows, maybe I will get a pleasant surprise.
