New York Nyc April Meet-up

John,

But I'm still a raging film guy who is primitive and retro.

What scares me the most is color photography. We'll see when the D3X becomes part of my arsenal...

At 56 I got about 3 more years before I have to get ready to quit my job.

WHAT!! Your To Young

Bob,

I have two pensions and money saved where I know I can live. I have had a rough life from humble beginings with no family support. With a disrupted life with many stops and starts and a high degree of stress I'm getting faded and tired. Along the decades I have always struggled in the arts, came close to making it to a level only to back slide again and again.

Before I'm too old I need to make my way as an artist before its too late. For me its a quality of life issue. I have 3 years to get serious about recreating myself while I still have disposable income. Either I make it or I don't.

BTW remember I had a very serious Cancer scare, and meanwhile people I know are dropping like May Flys.

Now is the time. I'm getting ready...

Phil,

I hope to clone what you did. I already own two DK-17's because of you. Send me a PM about which Canon screen I need to het and the mod that I need to perform to make it fit.

Now I wish I had my Noct-Nikkor again.

Cal

Phil,

My old ways of day-trading have returned. Tung offered to trade back my Noct-Nikkor. D3X and Noct-Nikkor will be an ultimized rig.

Cal

That's a monstrosity Bob!

John,

I spot a trend and you are part of it. LOL.

Monster cameras are emerging. I'm a proud owner of many, and you are the person who first coined the term "Monster" when describing some of my cameras.

Next February's "Carnival of Monsters" should be an interesting show. The guy to watch in my book is Christian. The again Sam always has interesting contenders. Maybe Jim has the coolest "Monster LTM."

Anyways in my Street Photography some of my subjects are kinda Diane Arbus like. Kinda disturbing.

Cal

I don't know, I am usually trying to reduce the size of my cameras. I do concede that I probably have the worlds only IIIc with M-winder attached. It still is smaller than those Nikons being mentioned, so not quite a monster.

Yeah, I am... and my Df w/ 85mm G lens is proof. Even my latest Sony is heavy for its size. I guess I'm more interested in great equipment that reacts right with me than I am with size.

With Leica M cameras, size was fun... there are so many small lenses and combos that it really is fun. With my AF cameras, there is only a few lenses and most aren't small. Not as fun. I've learned to deal with so many things that used to turn me off when I was a Leica M user. I still have my Ricoh GR for when I need a tiny camera (though I added a Nikon OVF to it recently).

Cal,
Check out focusingscreen.com. They modify existing screens so you don't have to.
The one I got for my D3 was the Canon Ec-B if I recall correctly.
NOTE: I just checked the site and under the D3 section, they no longer have the Canon screens but under Df they do. If you buy the screen yourself, it is a very easy mod where you simply file off the tab on the screen very carefully.

Good to hear you got your Noct-Nikkor back! I'd like to shoot a few frames with that on Sunday. I'm bringing my "new" (to me) F2.

Speaking of my F2, does anyone out there have a D screen for the F2? I'm needing one to shoot my 300mm f/4.5 without the split prism blacking out.

John,

Actually annoying you with some of my crazy rigs was fun. LOL.

I am learning that size and weight restrictions can hamper IQ and present design restrictions. If you are willing to deform your body by carrying heavy gear there are many new possibilities. I think as digital developments have evolved somewhat into a Plat-Tow that creative people are now exploring the possibilities for something fresh and new. This is why I think people currently are on trend building "Monster Cameras" (your phrase).

A great example is the Leica R system: not for everyone, but optics that are kinda novel due to not having the rangefinder design parameter of being small and compact. Without these constraints there are some great lenses that have been developed that were designed more fully and differently due to not having constraits and limitations. In fact it seems that my R8 was purposely made both bulky and extra heavy for big glass. While this suits me it is not for the general public.

At this point in life I can see that photography has deformed my body. My right arm is overbuilt from holding a camera for days at a time, often very heavy cameras. I look upon my 15 1/2 inch neck as being out of proportion for a skinny guy who only weighs 152 pounds, and I deem my neck ugly and thick like a football player, which kinda looks "Monsterous" on me. When I go to a tailor to get a suit fitted they take note that my right arm is actually about 3/4's of an inch longer than my left arm. Like a Hermit Crab I am deformed.

Phil,

I have a F2 "B" screen and frame I will gift you. If you can find a F3 "Red-Dot" I would consider that an upgrade, or better yet mount a F3 "Red-Dot" "E" screen in the F2 frame I'm giving you.

As far as the Noct-Nikkor goes It is not in my possesion yet, and Tung is a busy dad. Don't know when we will hook up.

Many thanks for the help with the manual focus mod.

Cal

POST SCRIP: In the spirit of fast moving daytrading of camers and camera gear, Tung has suggested that perhaps Thursday is a good day to hook-up. I have to retrieve the original packing for Tung's lens from my "Warehouse" Public Storage. LOL.

It it was fun to see too... you'd be a good salesman.

That was most likely from the Pentax 67...

Oh, and Tung only borrowed your lens... like Andre's 35mm Summaron we all passed around every few months. Now it's back with him.

John,

You are not the only person that has complimented me on being a good salesman.

Funny how some things just come home. Don't forget the M3-DS and the Leica II.

Tomorrow I will be getting my Noct-Nikkor back. It is just like day-trading. I will no longer own a 35 Lux ASPH Pre-FLE. I still have a black paint 35 Cron ASPH as a 35 and the 35/1.8 Nikkor in LTM. I like that lens better because of the weight. LOL.

Cal,

A D3x with the Noct is going to be quite a rig. It'll be nice and "robust" in size, as well doubling as a class 1a deadly weapon in the right hands :D

Im glad you're getting the Noct back. Im sure the Lux ASPH is a helluva lens but your Cron ASPH and Nikon screwmount lenses more than cover you for almost any situation in that focal length. You have speed, modern rendering, and old school rendering.

You're gonna love the D3x with the Noct, i have a feeling. That'll be a killer handheld night rig, too.

Wish I could make it to the meetup this Sunday but alas the wife is going away on a last minute business trip so Im gonna be Mr. Mom all weekend. It would probably be frowned upon bringing kids to a bar, right?

Yeah, you have great options at the same FL, so no big deal IMO.

Cal,
You now have the best excuse to get a Linhof. You clearly need a heavy camera with a left hand grip to balance your body out. It may even be tax deductible with a doctors note.

Cal, I am glad that I read that you are in the market for a Noct-nikkor in time. It's kind of a overkill to have both Noctilux and Noct-Nikkor, feels almost illegal...
