New York NYC February Meet-Up

Gear Alert:
I just bought a Kodak Retina IIa with proper accessories off the classifieds. I may enter it as a vintage piece.

This weather is really not amusing me at all.

Phil Forrest

Darn! Was hoping to meet Helen Hill, after all these years, pictures, and for-sale posts. One of these days I hope to take the trophy with a functioning circa 1940 one-shot color camera <g>.

Hah, Wishes do come True
Looks like we will meet...Different date....Vietnemese....
Moi & some of the Gang... ;)

Cal,
I think I will be coming to Beauty Pageant. It also happens, I am interezted in Kodak 5222. Would you have some rolled at 100' or separate 36 exposures rolls? If you plan to order a bulk 400' roll, I would gladly split it with you.

Sam,

I will bring you bakelite Holliwood Director meter that you won last year. Its been a while. Will you be bringing your daughter> I suspect that John has a surprise camera that your daughter would like.

Johns got the funniest thing. I'am not going to spoil the fun for him, but it took me awhile to digest what he's got:D

yeah, it's not the Hello Kitty M6 though. I'm going to leave it as a suprise unless Jeff or Pramodh spoil it or I'm caought out in the wild using it.

I'am going to keep my mouth shut on this one. Cal, you'll just have to be patient. Johns not going to disappoint you with this one.

Pro-Mone,

Awesome.

BTW I forwarded a flier that a camera dealer sent me for Chinese New Years to both Andre and John. One of the items was rather interesting: Basically it was a tree lens turret made for either a M2 or M3 thath kinda has a long handle with what looks like a handlebar grip from a Schwinn Sting Ray on the end. Anyways, effectively, the M2 with the three lenses and the long handle kinda closely resembles a Viking Battle Ax.

I was just joking around, but separately both John and Andre encouraged me to purchase this item that was listed as "Only 250 examples ever made. Only in production for one year. Extremely rare." Both independently said that they could see me using the lens turret in the Bronx.

Sam,

I'd be buying 400 foot rolls. No re-cans for me. I just don't see splittind 400 foot rolls because 400 feet is not that much film. LOL

Dave Lackey last year gave me a roll that I mistakenly shot at 800 ISO, but I remained impressed when I developed it in Diafine 7+4. I did notice that the film that was given me was fogged though and this is why I don't think re-cans are for me. I will be using 5222 at 400 ISO and using Diafine 3+3. My dumb mistake was a result of mistakenly using a 2X yellow filter on a meterless camera and not including the filter factor on my hand held meter.

Eventually I'll bulk the chemicals to make my own ADOX PQ to shoot the 5222 at 200 ISO. I work in a research lab so I have a lot of access to chemistry gear. One of my greatest assets is 18 Megaohm chemically pure water that is basically HPLC grade water.

If anyone needs brown glass gallon bottles, I recycle empty ones from work that once held alcohol. I reserve my recycling to only containers used for alcohol because since alcohol is so water soluable only a few rinses are required. Pick up is limited to coming to the Upper Eastside. Currently I have 4 in a cardboard case ready for transport.

Cal

BTW in your "Camera Depot" do you happen to have an 40mm Canon filters that are ultra low profile without front filter threads? Recently I acquired a black Canon 28/3.5 in LTM and I'm looking for a 40mm Y1 filter and a 40mm Y2 filter. I figure like the NSA I would use the internet to gather information. Hope you don't mind.

Also know in the past I had to remove my signature because someone constantly was solicitaing me in an annoying way trying to poach my gear. Out of all the people I know though you are the person that might have these filters laying around.

The Super Bowl and weather delays slowed delivery of my 21 SEM, but I finally got it yesterday. I am a lucky guy because I got a really great deal from Pop Flash, one of RFF's sponsors, on a used lens that I would say is not like new but is "factory fresh." The focus is still stiff like a brand new lens and it is obvious that this lens was not really used or seldom if that.

On the black Canadian MD-2 (only about 1K ever made) I played around dressing up the camera into 3 outfits. One I call "John Mode" in honor of my friend John who is a minimalist as far as gear goes where its just a the MD-2, the 21 SEM, and a Zeiss 21mm VF'er. Because the MD-2 lacks a battery compartment, a self timer, a frameline selector and a rangefinder there is a general lack of clutter that makes a powerful statement and the look I say is very elegant.

Next I added a black TA Rapidgrip, even though I know John hates my grips, LOL, and I know my grips annoy him. The TA Rapidgrip really adds some ergonomics and overall the camera become more masculine and aggressive in character. The grip really promotes shooting verticals in a very refreshing way.

Finally I go "Calzone Mode" and add a TA Rapidgrip so that the camera is fully weaponized: part brass knuckles; part black-jack; part switchblade/dagger with the Rapidwinder trigger exposed. The Rapidwinder kinda promotes shooting in three round bursts like an assassin, and because the kill zone on a 21 means shooting distance for street is an close in your face five feet the sound of cycling the Rapidwinder is almost like the sound of a pump shotgun: intimidating. LOL. I love evil cameras.

Anyways I first bought the MD-2 last summer, and I am very happy to now have built up this rig. Understand that I borrowed Tung's 24/3.8 and borrowed an 18/3.8 from Adorama to select the ideal lens to shoot ultra-wide. BTW the 18/3.8 was a tricky lens to control. In a way shooting the 18 was a rather feral experiance where anything can happen.

Cal,
Unfortunately, I don't have any 40mm filters of any kind. Usually, I use contraptions to fit filters I have on lenses, that I want to put a filter on. That includes using electrical tape, felt, reversing filters and using them as push-ons, etc. Recently I used a 52mm filter, removed glass from it, wrapped inside with electric tape, and used it as a push-on on original 50/1.5 Nokton, I have mounted on Prominent. Nokton uses 47mm push-on filters and hoods.

I understand whT you are saying about 400' rolls of film. Phil Forrest gave me 3 rolls of Kodak 5222, that I promptly shot, but it sits with the rest of my undeveloped film in fridge. My backlog is about 40 rolls, but I find it difficult to find time to develop film for the last year or so. But being film hoarder, I am always open to a possibility of acquiring more film. ;)

I don't think Veronica will be coming with me this year, but there is a chance, that she might. She has a Hello Kitty camera, but is not a M6. If she doesn't come, I would gladly take a picture of John's camera and show it to her. She is learning to dry fire a Konica C35AF with her sister, trying to do the same thing. Below is the link to a picture, that I don't know how to post in the thread, because my computer is down, and Ipad doesn't want to help me. :(

It was taken with 1925 Voigtlander Avus, equipped with Polaroid back. I scanned the goop, that got somewhat solarized.

Sam,

The filter was a shot in the dark, but realize like the NSA I hoard data for future use. LOL.

I'm sure that John would love to see Veronica's Hello Kitty camera BTW. I kinda loved that camera that Ari brought to meet up that was a kids toy that one was an unused gift to his neice that he reclaimed and recycled. It was kinda funny when he took a shot with that camera on Houston Street. Some hipster girl gave Ari an odd look. LOL.

I was looking for that Norwood Hollywood Director Bakelite meter I owe you, but last night couldn't find it. If it is not in this other location it might be warehoused in Public Storage on 110th Street. All I know is that I have it somewhere.

Cal,
No problem. I love hoarding information, as well. I will wait for the Norwood Director even more patiently, than you have held on to it to give it to me.
I think Veronica will loan me her camera to bring to the meet. I will also bring some more interesting items.

Sam,

I will work diligently to find that Norwood Director. Pretty sure it is not in Public Storage, or in the least I find out if it is if I do not find it at home tonight.

2013 was a very good year. I got back a M3-DS and 50 Rigid that I once owned in an illegal loan sharking deal; bought a Monochrom; bought a black MD-2; and found a M4 with original "L" seal for no-money. Basically started the year with only one M-body, but now somehow I own 5. LOL.

BTW I'll be bringing a few items to sell/barter. I like day-trading cameras. LOL.

Cal,
2013 was a great camera/lens year for me as well. Having only Zorki and FED ltm cameras prior, I acquired:
1932 BP nickel II with 11 o'clock Nickel Elmar;
IIIf with scratchless, but somewhat foggy Summitar;
Tanack IV-S with 50/2 HC Tanar(Nikkor copy or Nikkor) and 35/2.8 W. Tanar with finder;
28/3.5 W. Komura ltm with finder, caps qnd case;
Komura 2x LTM Teleconverter with finder, caps and case;
Zorki S with 50/3.5 Industar 50;
FED 2 with 52/2.8 Industar 26;

These are just ltm cameras, that I was able to procure last year, not counting SLRs, TLRs, etc. I am also in process of eliminating a lot of 35mm SLR camera bodies and some lenses, since I have decided to reduce the amount of camera systems I own. I think, at present time I own between 80-100 camera bodies of all kinds, and I have no idea how many lenses. I think, I am turning into collector/hoarder, and I don't like it. I might bring some stuff to trade/sell as well.

Sam,

Bring it all down, trade, sell and reload.

I own way too many cameras, but my problem is that not only do I become bonded to them I shoot them. I got a few that are not really needed though and some that haven't gotten used, but sometimes the price is right.

In the end I might be happier with less cameras, but sometimes I run into deals I just can't refuse. Almost like walking on the sidewalk and seeing a $20.00 bill just laying there...

Cal

Well, same here. I rotate them, use them, like them. But very often I also walk into deals, just like you do. I will try to make 2014 a year of purging or cleansing of sorts.
Unforunately, I live way too far from Puck Fair to bring a lot of stuff. I can only bring, what I would like to show, since a lot of stuff I have is not seen everyday, like LTM teleconverter, for example.

GEAR ALERT: Yesterday was a very good day because I secured an a la carte black paint MP with the hard to find 0.85 VF'er. I really like the grip-tack covering, and in East Harlem they would call the slight brassing "lindo." So I "Monstered" up my new MP with a black paint TA Rapidgrip, a black TA Rapidwinder, and mounted a mucho heavy chrome 50 Lux ASPH.

This is a killer rig, but one day I'll get the 75mm frames removed as a further upgrade. My Wetzlar M6 is a similarly rigged "Monster." so now I have a 0.72 and 0.85 "Monsters" to shoot wide and normal.

Yesterday day traded the excess 1970 chrome M4 that had an original "L" seal that I bought as a dead "Shelf Queen" that is also known as "Punky" because of the missing vulcanite, the bare metal, and the traces of old glue. This camera received an overhaul from Sherry and had a M3 style film advance lever installed and the eye-piece from a M6 to prevent scratching eyeglasses. All it took was one phone call and "Punky" was sold.

Also kitted up with the M4 was a 35/2.8 Summaron with caps and hood. The interesting story here is this lens was once Andre's, was sold to me at an insider price, sold to John at the same insider price; was sold back to me at the great insider price; and now Andre's lens is being sold back to Andre. LOL.

Don't forget to bring your old unused gear to the February Meet-Up to be recycled. I'll be bringing a M3-DS that had its prism resilvered by Leica Germany, was overhauled by Leica, and also recovered by Leica. Basically a factory fresh M3-DS with a brand new "L" seal.

Cal

Looks like Andre is going to make it to the Camera Parade.

I'm glad he got his old 35/2.8 Summaron back.

BTW somehow I developed a Griptac fetish. I really like the spongy grippy stickiness. Looks like my old 1970 chrome M4 I use to call "Punky" because of the missing Vulcanite Andre is going to eventually recover in black Griptic.

I for one like the grey Griptac on chrome cameras, perhaps because my beard is getting might-T grey. LOL.
