New York NYC February Meet-Up

The Noct-Nikkor is the holy grail of Nikon lenses in that "normal" range. Call me a heretic but I've always thought the Noct-Nikkor outperformed every Noctilux I've seen, save for the newest .95 verson. They are different for sure. The Nikkor being a lens that is 99.97% technically perfect while the Noctilae (is that the plural of Noctilux?) are almost as perfect but have a feeling to them that make them equally as special.

If I ever have $1000 to throw away, I'm going to modify a Canon FD 24mm f/1.4L to Nikon mount. That lens is equally special but they are so rare that no one has wanted to dismantle them for use on a digital.

I digress.

I just found out about the Canon Ec-S screen which has a very coarse oblique scattering angle (like the old D screen for the F and F2) which would be a perfect screen for a Nikon Df user who has nothing but lenses faster than f/2. I've been offered a second D3 for very little money and will probably bite on the deal since I use them for work.

Ok, this digression deserves to be on a different thread. I'll stop.

I'm going to win the beauty pageant this year. The rest of you might as well not even show up. Sorry, the hello kitty M6 has been found.

Will this fit in Puck Fair??

I , pathetically , will have nothing to show . Hope that's ok. I will be drooling however .

In other news, did anyone go to Chinatown today?
There was the usual assortment of weekend photogs.
Didn't recognize anyone but spotted a few Leicas.
Not sure if there are more festivities tomorrow

John,

John C. is a great sport and took many a beating for having gear that creates great envy. In many ways John C. is our purr-ren-ial "underdog." He always captures the brunt of many laughs. John kinda captures the spirit of where we really make fun of ourselves and the RFF culture.

No doubt that John C. has great gear. In kidding around I always say between him and Tung that together they have the entire Leica catalog. How crazy was it that Tung brought a F1.0 Noctilux and a 0.95 Noctilux to a Meet-Up?

I remember that one..

'Beauty Pageant'

Best of Luck to ALL participants !!!!

Was there a couple of years ago...really crowded.

Yes, I know but the weather is not as freezer like as the previous two weeks and I haven't been out shooting
since the decisive winter challenge. I hear some rattling unrest from my camera bag ;).
I don't want the SD cards get all gummed up:D

Phil,

February is gear-month in NYC. Gear hype is welcomed.

Technically the Noctilux has sharper corners than the Noct-Nikkor, but the Noctilux has light fall off, while the Noct-Nikkor does not.

The shallow DOF I say the Noct-Nikkor is the clear winner because it has a lower minimun close focus.

At F8.0 the Noctilux is sharper, but the Noct-Nikkor really is optimized for wide open to F-4.0.

Tung's version of the Noct-Nikkor is the later AIS version that has more aperture blades for a very smooth OOF.

You are right. The Noct-Nikkor is a special lens.

So far this year we have no judges. Could be interesting because basically it is mob-rule anyways.

GEAR ALERT: I might get my 21 SEM today. Now that I have no 75mm frames cluttering my M6 VF'er I think having two TA Rapidwinder/TA Rapidgrip M-bodies with a wide and normal spread will be cool. Will be really cool to shoot 21mm FOV in small format and also medium format in 6x9 with the Plaubel 69W.

Darn! Was hoping to meet Helen Hill, after all these years, pictures, and for-sale posts. One of these days I hope to take the trophy with a functioning circa 1940 one-shot color camera <g>.

James,

I met Helen by chance yesterday at Adorama. Another time I met her by chance at Photo Village. Also ran into her at a Harvey Stein opening.

Helen is always mucho fun.

Anyone interested in Kodak 5222??? I'm going to use up the last of my 135 Acros and Arista Premium and go 5222 bulk load for small format. I figure Diafine at 400 ISO and ADOX at 250 ISO. BTW I mistakenly shot 5222 at 800 ISO (didn't acout for a 1-stop filter factor on a meterless camera) and developed in Diafine 4+7 and got surprising results. This film has mucho lattitude, and doesn't seem to compress contrast as much as Tri-X. Perhaps it will be like Acros and not need a hard contrast push via filters.

Cal

Cal,
I think I will be coming to Beauty Pageant. It also happens, I am interezted in Kodak 5222. Would you have some rolled at 100' or separate 36 exposures rolls? If you plan to order a bulk 400' roll, I would gladly split it with you.
