MFM,
I thought about this too.
The footprint of the shed is 8x8 or 64 square feet. I have in my basement some ware a 1000 watt space heater that came from Grumman because we complained about the trailer we were housed in. Pretty much we were gifted each one of these heaters.
The formula for power is P=IE, where power is in watts; Iis the current; and E is the voltage. So if I do the simple math a 1000 watt heater, about the same power as a hair drier, using 120 as the voltage would draw 8.33 amps. Still a lot, but 12 guage wire still wound have a voltage drop.
Hmmm.
This is where building the second floor on my garage comes in and I somehow convert the garage somewhat into a carriage house.
Seems there is no substitute for the rustic cedar shed, but I have a longer term plan.
I have to look into this more. “Maggie” recycled a down quit to use as a wrap. At night it has been below 40’s in the low, but she still goes out to her shed.
It is a wonderful space, but 1000 watts isn’t going to take off much of the edge when it gets down to freezing temperatures.

Energy prices dropped after the Iranian oil infrastructure was spared from the revenge bombing by Israel. The price level around $67.00 suggests the Saudi glut to gain market share is happening, but also might indicate economic slowdown around the world.
$60.00 oil could become this year’s Christmas present from the Arab/Muslim world. Be careful for what you ask for…
The U.S. is a major oil exporter, and the energy we produce is not as cheap to extract as Saudi oil that lays close to the surface. A lot of our oil comes from fracking and added costs. Use to be around $60.00 oil where fracked oil became profitable, but that number certainly is old and has changed. Pretty much though $60.00 a barrel oil is required, or else wells get capped.
Understand there is a good amount of lead time and lag to both shut-down, and start production again as well as cost. What I am explaining the cycle that goes based on the last Saudi glut. Pretty much a trade war has started over market share. Also know since we have become a major oil and energy exporter that this will have a somewhat big impact on our economy. I would say outsized…
No doubt that this industry known collectively as the “oil-patch” is boom or bust. Expect an economic consequence or consequences.
Last night I looked at boutique bike parts. I got it in my mind the idea of saving the rare Suntour XC Pro drivetrain on the IBIS SS and convert the bike into either a 3x1 using a Paul’s Components “Melvin” chain tensioner, or going single speed. It presently has mustache handlebars and already conveys a muy retro look.
On one hand I want to preserve the bike because it is so beautiful, but on the other hand I want to enjoy and use the bike. Originally I bought the bike for “Maggie” but the frame size was misstated. Somehow it is my perfect size, and I secured it at a very good price. Pretty much a garage bike that I don’t think was ever used off-road.
I was just doing research and confirming the specs on the Melvin, and then I delved into other bike parts to see the spread of inflation.
The rims are a pair of Sun Ryhno Lites that are polished. These rims are “Phil” approved and highly rated as mucho strong. Everything is kitted out as 32 spoke. AJ builds strong wheels.
The blue and purple paint on the IBIS SS frame and matching stem is mucho loud and broadcasts muy old. Pretty much seeing an old hippy riding a retro bike is a mucho loud bold statement of mucho cool. Back in the day mucho long stems were the norm, but pretty much are too exaggerated.
I am like the guppy in the tank with the fancy tail. In animal sexuality the male opulence draws in the females. This part of sexuality extends to humans. Women are drawn to males that stand out as fancy. Pretty much in a fish tank all the females want to mate and are drawn to the single fancy male with the nice tail, while all the other males are ignored. Not so different than rock stars and groupies…
I effectively changed the seating position to more upright by using mustache bars which reinforces the old school look. I had these bars laying around as spares.
So last night I was alarmed at the prices of the boutique components today. I’m muy happy that I have the hubs and rims stockpiled, and also have a stockpile of White Industry freewheels. The level of inflation has crept into my bike parts inventory to the point that not only are things more costly, but are approaching getting priced out.
I took a break from bike building and upgrading, and pretty much I awaken into a new world, but I’m glad I was obsessive and OCD enough to have had wisdom to hoard and stockpile when prices were lower and affordable.
I figure that except by Carmel the railroad grades that comprise the Empire State Trailway are kinda flat and more or less very gradual grades. A single speed with 72 inch gear would do fine, except for the hills in Carmel. A 72/63 2x1 gearing with slicks on a mountain bike would be all that is required.
I forgot the steep climb in Brewster before the Great Swamp. A 3x1 is possible with a chain stretch of 20 teeth using the Melvin so I could get a low around 45 gear inches.
I have lots of gearing options...
So pretty much today I’m a happy hoarder. My stockpiling and hoarding saved me lots of money as I see 30% increases in prices or more. In a ways I used overconsumption to my advantage.
That IBIS SS certainly is a statement, and pretty much says who I am. No wonder I’m so widely known.
So now I’m excited. Know that earlier in the year I had AJ start building out a single speed wheel set, and I rounded up all the parts. Some I already had accumulated. The rims he ordered, but I decided to put the build on hold, I had jumped the shark and had some expenses come up. I paid for the rims and shelved the project. Originally the wheels were for the IBIS Alibi frame I secured. My thinking was to build out that bike as a single speed, 3x1, or 2x1.
The IBIS SS is a mucho cool bike. It dates back into the early days when I delved into riding.
Know that inflation has a spillover effect. Kinda like when new car prices go up a residual effect is that used car prices also inflate in tandem. I speculated, and now I kinda profited by saving money.
At this point also I don’t feel cheated, I have a massive stockpile of toys to play with. More than practical, and also more than I require or need.

I’m still speculating: I want to secure another Vintage 47 amp (VA-185), and build out a single pickup Tele with only a Charlie Christian pickup.
The idea is to spend to save money knowing that inflation will escalate and make things eventually more costly and eventually unaffordable.
The rash increases of consignments at a Reverb site tells me and indicates that debt is a problem, at least for musicians, as it becomes evident they are trying to raise cash.
All of this is kinda sudden, and pretty much this is “BROADCASTING” that inflation is entrenched, meanwhile there are other indicators “SAYING” that there is an economic slowdown nderway.
Up ahead I see “STAGFLATION” because of underlying “UNSUSTAINABLE DEBT LEVELS.”
Sorry for all the shouting… “Look out below,” I say… When will the music stop? In this game of Musical Chairs will you get caught out sitting on debt and be taken out of the game? Do you have adequate buffer to ride out an extended period of Stagflation?
Debt levels suggest it will be a long-long time… What a Cluster-FXXX as they say in the military.

The overnight low was 35 degrees. The growing season endures, and yet milder temperatures are in the future forecasts.
“Maggie” is mucho annoyed. She is in the house now because her hands are “frozen.”
I think mentioning that a 1000 watt hair drier as a reference makes evident that an electric heater is not a long term solution. Perhaps only takes off an edge.
My experience is that women are an oppressed group, are historically oppressed by men, and pretty much now no longer listen to reason, logic, or ideas that emulate from men, including Calvin.
So I am doing a rather clever thing that follows the Chinese expression, “Time is the best weapon.”
I am a really great salesman. I already pointed out how the garage could be converted into a studio space, but Maggie wants to shelter our cars. She also feels strongly about not extending the footprint of any dwelling, so the deduction is go vertical.
So now I just have to wait, for the delayed logic and rational thinking to set in. I think If I come up with the capitol to pay for the 400 square foot carriage house conversion, eventually it will happen. Know that here in Peekskill, even though the city is only 4 square miles and has a population of 25K inhabitants, there is a strong movement for developing affordable housing and ADU’s.
Not hard to somewhat for me to do a bit of bait and switch to manipulate the ADU sentiment to have my way. No need for me to have one of my “hussy-fits.” Know that because I’m a drama queen that my friends that know me say, “I am worse than a woman,” when I go hysterical-mode when I don’t get my way.
So I have a plan; “Don’t tell Maggie.”

I fiddled with my steel IBIS Mountain Trials. It is set up as an XTR 9-speed 1x11, and now it weighs 22 1/2 pounds with 2.35 inch wide tires front and rear.
This is a bike that is kinda overbuilt, but somehow it is kinda light for a steel full-rigid. What I like about the wider tires is that they hold more air, so I only need 25 PSI on the rear wheel where most of my body weight is centered. The front all I need is about 20-21 PSI. I have a bit of cush even though it is a full rigid via the supersized tires.
The cush/give also offers better traction and grip.
“Maggie” had a cold, and now she thinks it is the flu. She took a Covid test, but that was days ago…
So far I’m symptom free. I just feel lazy, but I’m cleaning the house, putting things away, and getting organized.
Did some other bike maintenance. Now I need to tweak a truss rod on the Cabronita and reset the intonation. There is a bow in the neck and some buzzing. Have to adjust some styling height higher on a few strings after the truss rod adjustment.
Feeling the onset of tiredness from the cooler weather and the short days. Oh-well…

“Maggie” did another Covid test and the results are negative.
What seemed to be a cold now looks like it might be a flu. Upset stomach, body and headache. She had some fevers, then went away, now the fever is back.
So far I’m asymptomatic.
I let the Cabronita settle in for a day, and now I set it up. Plays great, and I think it is kinda magic with the right amount of brightness for clarity with abundant warmth.. Also plays smooth.
I got a lot of positive results today. I am pleased lost in my own tiny universe.
Saturday a contractor starts work. Gym tomorrow and Friday. The grandson sometime Thursday.
Retirement is still busy enough. Little things add up to be accomplishment.
I’m going into the basement to look at the bikes again. Hmmm…

Gold had a new Intra-Day High of $2787.70 today. Not so far from $2.8K.
Pretty much outa control inflation or a currency/bond crisis is expected. The $2.8K level was mentioned as the expected high around the end of 2024.
At this pace it could be $3K gold at the end of 2024.
For me it is rude to look at the prices of bike parts. Crazy money for the White Industry ENO hub, the polished Sun Rhyno Lite 32-hole rims also. I bought the hub used a while back for a good price. AJ gave me the rims at his cost.
I scoured EBAY looking for a cheap way out, and I wonder if I get a retro period correct NOS rim if it makes sense to just have a rear single speed wheel built to save/hoard the mighty Sun Rhyno Lite rims as a set for a future wheel build. Also I would keep the 32-hole Suntour Grease Guard hub as treasure also. Pretty much I don’t want to squander my resources.
I also ran an inventory, I have mucho cassettes for 9 and 11 speed. There are two spare 11-speed XTR rear derailleurs. Should I get a shifter to have a 1x11 capability as a spare? Then why not secure a front shifter and front derailleur? Hmmm…
So with inflation, I have recognized that I have limited resources… It would be smart to keep my ammo dry and maintain my stockpiles.
Anyways the bike part situation kinda got a jump, and it is mucho rude at the inflated prices. Trouble lays ahead.
Today I had lunch with Andrew. He graduated High School in 1965, and I graduated in 1976, so he is about 11 years older than me. We hung around a boatyard in Buchanan. A pleasant day but rather cold.
I remarked about this Grady White that had two 350HP 4-stroke outboards. I made the remark that this is a thirsty boat, and Andrew told me about a speedboat he had that had twin 440 Hemi’s. The boat could do 70MPH, but at 50-60 MPH he burned 40 gallons of high test an hour.
So my friend Andrew is kinda crazy. LOL. Anyways the people that are my friends are not boring.
“Maggie” ordered this electric blanket that has a hood. It is like a long cloak. The cloak is battery powered. I have a 53 watt heating pad, and three 10 AmpHour Milwaukee batteries. Two are for the lawn mower, and one is for a 7 1/2 inch table saw. I bought an AC adapter that can handle 175 watts.
The CVS heating pad uses 53 watts, so in effect it can be used as a localized hot spot that can be a hand warmer and work space.
I’m going to use the heating pad to see how long I have with a Milwaukee battery pack. I’ll get an idea of how much capacity I have with just one battery.
The idea here is to localize the heating because the shed is not insulated and is not so easy to heat. Pretty much the loss of the She Shack makes Maggie sad.

Gold’s new Intra-Day High is $2801.70.
My prediction that gold would hit $2.8K by the end of the month came true. Inflation fears, currency crisis, debt crisis and political instability are the multiple reasons. The hoarding is being performed by the Banksters who are considered “smart money.
Hmmm… Remember that gold is insurance to preserve wealth…
Today and Friday are gym-days to pump blood. My bursitis in my right hip is still there, and I’m aware that even increased blood flow from a heating pad helps. The idea is to do no further harm, but increase the blood flow to heal the inflammation and collected excess fluid in a joint padding.
I looked at a pair of my shoes. I generally wear out the heal because I have a rather pronounced heal strike, and to exacerbate this my right foot is even more exaggerated. I basically wear out shoes and sneakers quickly.
My legs happen to be of the same length, but my right arm is an inch longer than my left. Take into account that I have narrow shoulders of a girly man, the end result is I have a killer right that uses speed, snap, and full extension along with the physics of leverage to generate mucho force. Pretty much a kinetic weapon that can take out a tank. Pure physics…
Then add onto this my bowed legs, which makes me hyper agile to move laterally. Pretty much makes me able to dodge punches, counter attack, and flank an opponent. Lots of experience here growing up in the 70’s.
******************
I am mucho pleased. I discovered last night that I have on hand a used Mavic 261 32-hole rim in my stockpile of parts.
I saved the rim from a front wheel that had a Ringle hub that the spoke flange fatigued and cracked. I think I caused this fatigue because of how I use a bike like a stair master and use extensive leaning via standing to create excessive loading and using my entire body a a long lever to develop force. I am known for my out of the seat style of riding, especially mountain biking.
By great luck this spare rim is period correct an the perfect match for the OEM wheels that already exist on the IBIS SS, a bike that was bought by mistake because originally bought for “Maggie,” but advertised as being a smaller frame size, but actually by chance a perfect fit for me.
This bike I think was a garage bike that did not see any off-road use. Mighty clean. Actually stunning because of remarkable condition and still OEM. If it was an old car it would be called a “Survivor” that remains “factory-correct.” Pretty much a mucho lucky find.
So this excess rim I discovered allows me to save the polished set of Sun Rhyno lites for a future set of wheel builds, perhaps for the Fat Chance Yo Eddy. I might want to secure a spare XTR 11-speed shifter to go 1x11.
Like a chess player I’m thinking three moves ahead. As a “thinker” I don’t think short-term, and I not only promote day-dreaming, but also avoid being near or short sighted. Thinking long term generally pays dividends, saves money, offers options, provides flexibility, offers creative options, and likely has made me wealthier.
****************
The mild weather and extended growing season looks to extend well into November. 80 degree temperature expected tomorrow as the high. Kinda wonderful for me, but yesterday Andrew mentioned that along the pacific coasts the wild fire season already has begun. Drought and dry season has already started.
Then there is the smoldering peat in Canada underground that can reignite and emerge at any time…
**************
My heating pad experiment with the 175 watt Milwaukee battery pack failed with the 53 watt heating pad load. I of course attempted to blast the setting on the high heat setting. All looked well, but the battery pack must of drew too much initial current, and it must of tripped off some protective circuitry in the battery pack.
Because I’m stubborn, further testing. Heating elements act like Thermistors, meaning the load can initially appear as a short, until things warm up. Pretty much like running a car in the winter it is best to ramp things up gently untill operating temperatures are reached. The constant state may be the advertised 53 watts, but the initial current draw likely exceeds the 175 watt reading on the power supply.
Anyways I have not given up on the idea of using a heating pad or mat to locally heat a work area. Know that Maggie ordered the $169.00 cloak with a hood that is basically an electric blanket.
Pretty much this eventually will point to building out the 400 square foot second floor studio on top of the garage along with a raised deck to exploit the view. “Don’t tell Maggie.” Ha-ha…
I have the idea of having all windows on the wall that faces due south for light and solar gain. Pretty much the other three walls no windows except east and west near the peak of a gabled roof that has its peak aligned also east and west.
On the inside I’ll have a balcony/loft area to exploit a cathedral ceiling that otherwise is open. The idea here is to have a flow through for ventilation. A reversible ceiling fan could work as a whole house fan to draw in cooler air from the outside to avoid solar gain when not needed. Reverse the fan in the winter to recirculate the warm air that rises.
From the street it would just look like a carriage house, but from the back-backyard it would be rather dramatic with an elevated view that kinda extends and suggests terracing. Engineered into this design is privacy. Don’t forget that we have intrusive neighbors that I knocked named “Snoopy” and “JJ” (short for Joe Rogan Junior).
The south view would include a twin lawn divided by a walkway, a graveled open area, another open area labeled “the table” followed by the cliff like bluff I created that leads down into a valley that contains a marsh, frog pond, a brook, and then in the distance a forested hillside. Lots of drama in the landscape.

Cal, Ringle hubs have always been known for faults. I trashed two brand new hubs, one after the other, within the span of a few months.
Recently, I've been riding a "new" track bike, a 1949 Rotrax "Shirley" track frame. Built up with the set of wheels from my Harrison Madison frame, and some other parts from the shop I'm moonlighting at. Saddle is a formerly NOS BIM 39 which is the same as the old Ideale 80, by the same maker. Post is Reynolds alloy, stem and bars are unknown beautiful pair with "Super" engraved into the stem clamp, and "Sport" engraved into the sculpted shim. It is thought that these are from a Belgian maker. Crankset is a Williams C1200 with a Chater-Lea ring. Bottom bracket is a Bayliss Wiley and I think I'm using the old hollow spindle, though there has been so much parts shuffling that it may also be a BW23. Pedals are Lyotard 23 "Berthet". Aside from the wheels, this build is pure post-WWII.
A couple weeks ago I made a major gearing jump from 48/18 ( I thought I was riding a 17 tooth cog) to 48/16 and I'm noticeably faster. Slightly less spinning, but I'm riding along with automobile traffic on most of Philly's streets.
I have a 40 hole Airlite rear track hub on the way, which will be laced to a Mavic MA2. I also have the front Airlite that will get the same treatment and this bike build will be done. I was going to use that front Airlite hub as a mate for my red anodized rear track hub, but that will wait for now. Once I get the Airlite wheels built, then I'll have two working path racers, the '49 Rotrax and the 52 Harrison, which is set up fixed but with quarter mudguards and brakes front and rear.
After that, I'll start the slow process of building the Ron Cooper A.S. Gillott Tourist Deluxe. Still not decided on the color, but I like the idea of the classic warm gray with red lug lining and a white head tube. We'll see.
One of these days I'm going to get those track bikes up to the velodrome near Allentown.

So my delusion of saving and stockpiling continues. I also am using what I saved and had on hand. I saved money, and pretty much fulfilled a daydream that was optimistic.
Know that yesterday I scoured EBAY looking for a Mavic 261 rim. I came up dry. Pretty discouraging seeing all the crazy inflated prices on single speed wheel-sets that were cost prohibited.
Moral of the story is it pays to be determined and stubborn. Also pretty much I’m just a lucky guy, but to a certain extent a positive mental attitude opens up the universe for me. In a ways I’m lucky because I create it by living in a realm of possibility.
Pretty much though the world and local news looks to be pointing to negativity, oppressive times, hardship, and economic stress and uncertainty.
Navy SEAL survival training though suggests that 95% of survival is maintaining a positive mental attitude. If out of ammo behind enemy lines the positive spin is I’m not captured yet, and I’m not bleeding. Point is there can always be a positive spin or framing.
I worked at a notable famous hospital for 21 years. It was not easy because my big boss was mentally ill and had serious rage and anger issues as well as having paranoid tendencies. I endured this abuse for over a decade before he effectively was pushed out into retirement. This man was truly insane.
After this big boss was pushed out his mini-me, my immediate supervisor, How-Weird, became a very oppressive bully, and then I embraced a second decade of oppression and abuse. Really horrible. This immediate supervisor also eventually kinda also got pushed out, but also he kinda FXXX’ed himself by resigning. He overstepped his power and created tension with powerful people above him, like serious powerful bosses.
How-Weird ended up retiring, but also true is he kinda was getting also pushed out.
My mode of thinking was realizing that How-Weird (Howard is his real name) was not only an unhappy micro manager that was very anxious, but also was crazy and insane in a very different way. I coped with the situation, in a very Calzone manner. I framed myself as being a better man, which is the truth, and putting down in my mind that How-Weird not only was severely unhappy, chronically distressed, and pretty much a complete and total loser.
I would simply think, “At least I’m not him.” This is kinda like the Navy SEAL that says, “At least I’m not bleeding.”
Also the Chinese expression, “Time is the best weapon,” eventually became evident and true. How-Weird’s ego and need for power and control eventually got carried away.
Anyways, in the end I won the battle and war, I am pleased that in a way justice was served, and I know bad things happen to bad people because in the end they FXXX’ed themselves.
Know that I kinda was accommodated in my early retirement. I left on my own terms and in a way that was what I planned.
In the end, conversely, good things also happen to good people.
As I reflect on this, I am not only happy, but also proud. Truly I am the better “man.”
Tough times seem impending. Try to maintain a positive mental attitude, don’t give up, and be stubborn…

Phil,
Thanks for your post. My bikes capture only a certain era, but your gear captures passion and history.
This is beyond my capabilities, and truly is an amazing feat. Real trophy bikes, and they get used as intended.
Pretty much way out of my league…
Anyways thanks for keeping this thread interesting.
Also, “Crazy is good.” We already live in a world of mediocrity, why add to it? Pretty much don’t be “extra-medium,” as my friend Eddie-Jeff once said.

I also had the cracked flange problem on Nuke Proof hubs. They didn’t last too long, and somehow I luckily got them warranteed at the Pro Shop for credit.
Partially weak metallurgy and design, but also compounded by my unconventional style.

I’m acutely aware of inflation. Pretty rude the price increases…
So I’m looking for bargains, and making some speculative purchases. I suspect some people are trying to raise cash, so there are some unusual listings and opportunities. I think I’ll keep an eye out, and stay loose. Nothing crazy, I’m looking for bargains for value.
Went to the gym and the weigh in this week is 159.5 pounds. I suspect the bloat I saw in the mirror was water weight. This is after a break from the gym. I was suspecting that I might have blown past 160, but I didn’t.
I curbed the elliptical workout to only 40 minutes, not a high resistance, and a high 120 average for strides per minute. I’m saving myself for the second gym day Friday.
“Maggie” is hating any scheduling. She pretty much wants to emulate my lazy care-free mode. The gym appointments are a sore point that kinda makes her bitchy. Not a bad thing for me, because I include her in my bike rides. The gym I thought we could also do together, and my best interest is the preventative maintenance to forestall health and mental decline.
But of course this somewhat slows me down and compromises my fitness, my enjoyment, and cuts short my workouts. Trying to do anything with a woman gets more involved…
So I have my goals of loosing some weight to become a skinny bitch again (under 155 pounds); work up to doing a Century on the Empire State Trailway (nearly level railroad grades) that I’d like to do weekly; and generally getting ripped. This would be easier without towing Maggie along.
The free gym membership is great for me. When I need to avoid the cold, I have a place to go. Also having all that equipment at my disposal is great. I can be a gym rat. The overall goal is to become healthier, stronger, and more fit.

I bought into a right XTR 11-speed shifter to have the capability to make a future 1x11 XTR 11-speed bike upgrade.
Know that I’m sitting on a stockpile of XT 11-40T and 11-42T cassettes that I bough on a Jenson close out. I loaded up the truck.
I’m stockpiling before its too late. Nice to have a system kitted out in my stockpile.

NYC has had the driest October in recorded history.
Here in Peekskill near my house we have had light drizzles, but likely not measurable amounts.
One more day left to the month.
Tomorrow they predict a high of 83 degrees.
We have an Asian pear tree that sheds its leaves early after fruiting. The branch tips are sprouting leaves as if spring is happening again. Pretty much this tree thinks there is a second spring.

It’s the hubs, or that your wheels are over tensioned. What was the spoke pattern?
I weigh a hundred pounds more than you and have never broken a hub flange. I also stick to the ‘real’ makers not the bike jewelry you seem to like. It’s not your style, siting in the saddle or standing you weigh the same, the side to side will add some stress but you are 160lbs.

Joe,
Three cross. Usually 32 spoke.
Some of my 24 inch wheels though are 36 spoke. Basically BMX racing wheels. Them 24 inch wheels are might strong.
I stick with White Industry hubs now,
Only Ringle and Nuke Proof failed. Once I discovered White Industries Hubs I stuck with them.

The 40 minutes in the gym on the elliptical sped up the healing quit a bit. The bursitis persists though. Thinking of rowing today at home just to pump blood to continue the process, then another gym day Friday. Of couse as I write this I’m using the heating pad.
Did an inventory of XTR last night. I have two short cage rear derailleurs and one long cage, only one front derailleur, one right shifter (M9000), and an incoming 11-12 speed M9100. Need to get a left shifter to exploit a 2x11 capability.
Pretty well set to update the IBIS SS or the Fat Chance Yo Eddy. Wheels would have to be built, and I have the pair of polished 32-hole Sun Rhyno lites…
So I’m kinda future proof… I can see the Yo Eddy as a 1x11, and the IBIS SS set up as a 2x11. Things are kinda kitted out…
Happy-happy.

Today’s predicted high is 83 degrees, and it is October 31st. Been a dry month with only enough drizzle to wet pavement, but not measurable rain. We are under a fire alert. This mild weather is expected to extend to mid November.
Another extended growing season, and my freezer is full of plum tomatoes for sause. Been giving away 3-5 pounds of tomatoes at a time.
I noticed a big difference in the mirror from yesterdays gym workout. I am carrying a lot of water weight and bloat.
Today I need to go slow, but sweat. I welcome the warm temperatures. A quart of water is about 2 pounds.

The bursitis in my right hip made a markedly vast improvement after yesterday’s gym workout.
Tomorrow is another gym day. I also started doing pushups again, and tomorrow I’ll add in pull-ups. Back to strength training and getting ripped. As I gain muscle it looks remote that I might drop under 155 and become a skinny bitch again. I’m looking more UFC than a skinny cyclist that is a climber.
Tomorrow also is expected to be another 80 degree day, and it will be November 1st.
Getting the blood flow up aids in the healing. My understanding the inflammation of the sack like cushion is an amount of excess fluid. It is reported that this takes time.
To get back to Phil’s question: “Can cycling help?” Likely so but the idea is not to stress the joint. Pretty much on the elyptical I throttled back the resistance and upped the strides per minute to 120. My guess I could do the same on a bike with a cadence of 100 or more pushing an EZ-PZ gear.
Its all about blood flow. Also know that the Physical Therapy tries to develop and strengthen the muscles that get weak or tighten from too much sitting. Sitting too much is bad for your health.
Trying to sort out all my bikes. Each one is somewhat specialized, but the Ti IBIS seems to have a lot of coverage where it can be built into many different bikes. Some conversions like full rigid to front suspension are EZ-PZ because I made it so that the front brakes gets transplanted as an assembly with the fork. Then I also have extra wheel sets so converting from slicks to mountain bike off road too is modular.
Pretty much the Ti IBIS does paved Empire State Trailway, gravel/crushed stone Empire State Trailway, and off-road single track.
I could also extend this to single speed, 2x1, and even 3x1. The point here is that this can get carried away mucho fast, and I think I want to place a limit to be practical.
So then I have the IBIS SS a “garage” bike that is kinda well preserved and OEM. Don’t really want to scar it up off-road. And it would be mighty cool to preserve its historic value since it kinda is a “survivor” that pretty much is still OEM and all period correct.
When I use word “Garage” bike t means a bike that was ridden only on the street and saw no off road abuse. The paint does not lie.
Understand that back in the day the bikes at IBIS were individually kinda custom ordered if not factory spec bikes. My IBIS SS features the upgrades of a custom order.
So luckily I found in my stokepile an exact rim that matches the OEM Mavic 261, which I tried to find on EBAY. None available, but somehow I have the rim I need right in my basement. How did that happen?
Well the Ringle hub cracked the spoke flange, and I saved the rim. This likely happened over a decade ago…
So now the excitement is to have AJ build me a single speed wheel out of this rim and a used White Industries ENO elyptical hub I have in hand. Straight 14 guage, brass nipples, nothing fancy. The axel allows swing to take up chain slack which is great for a single speed, but because I have a Paul’s Components “Melvin” I can also easily do a 2x1, or a 3x1 ising a front derailleur.
Middleburn has these 104 4-hole spiders which has these chainrings with ramps for mucho swift, crisp, violent shifting. The smut is the jump in teeth is limited to 10 teeth, and the chain stretch is limited to 20 teeth, so basically the differential between the largest chainring and the smallest cannot exceed 20 teeth. Ten teeth jumps are best.
I figure I can have a 3-speed bike using 42/32/22 chainrings and a 17 tooth freewheel to have a 63”-48” and 33” gearing. The bonus here is I can use an 8-speed chain. BTW this is with a tire that is 25.5 inches in diameter.
Very low maintenance, durable, strong, and EZ-PZ.
Why not have a dedicated bike for single speed, 2x1 (63’ and 48”), or 3x1 (63”, 48”, and 33”). Ato be honest do I really need a 33 gear inch?
Depend on how all his works out. I couldGet the kit to convert my ENO hub into a non-eccentric hub if the Melvin 2x1 ends up being the hotter setup. Then again a Single Speed without a Melvin is very-very elegant.
Certainly the bike will be quite a looker. Gearing will be a 63/48 if two-speed; or using a 42-17T for a 63 gear inch.
