New York NYC May Meet-Up

I might have to buy another 3880 as a back-up. Not sure the replacement will be better than what I now use. Also not sure if it will be developed for use with Piezography or future use with Cone Color Inks.

Maybe I'll wait. Sooner or later I'll need a color printer for Printing D3X files.

Cal

It'll take JC awhile to adapt the new printer I would imagine ... 3880's still on sale.

Hello folks,
I'm new to this group (and to RFF as well). May I ask if this is a closed/private group or if it is open to anyone? Is the meetup restricted to a select group, or do you also accept new members?
Thank you!

It is an open group....anyone can come and hang out. It's a very casual meet-up. Drink some beer (or whatever), have a little food, and look at cameras / photos. Many who don't drink still come as well. We do ask that you at least order something though since they've been good to us there.

Unfortunately, my 58mm is stuck in Fed Ex limbo.

Raj,

Pretty much a safe place for anyone interested in photography. In the past some new members were intimidated because there is mucho expensive gear, and intimidated SLR shooter's wanted to know if they would be welcomed. LOL.

Basically it is a support group with many members, kinda like Cameras Anonomous, and it is a safe place to be yourself. No bullying allowed. LOL.

Hi jsrockit and Cal,
Thank you - sounds wonderful! I hope to make it to your next meeting.
Hope to meet you soon,
Raj
PS - Cal, having read your profile, I fear that I'm a bit of a gear whore as well, with a passion for old cameras/lense (anything >30 years old and I'm hooked!).

John,

That really sucks. I'm basically in camera heaven.

Please no more kind offers and deals that I can't refuse.

The black 45/2.8P AIS is a very trick lens on the D3X. It kinda is like the size of a body cap, but the extream short focus throw makes it almost like autofocus. I was correct about the rich saturated colors of this simple Tessar lens with Nikon Intergrated Coating. The colors and contrast are profound. I think this lens will kill on your DF, but it is so small that it would be like de-monstering your DF. The focus is but a twitch from infinity to 7 feet. Who needs autofocus?

Although clearly the D3X is truely a monster ergonomically it weighs little. I added a DK-17M 1.2X magnifier that I borrowed from my F3HP. Makes a huge difference. It seems I don't mind not having any focusing aids because I'm use to focusing on ground glass. I even changed the screen on the R8 to plain ground glass.

DISCLOSURE: NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR GAS. LOL.

Start saving for February. Every February is either a Camera Beauty Pagent; Camerafest; Camera Parade; Camera Convention; Camera Olympics; or some other celebration wher we make fun of ourselves and camera culture in an over-the-top manner. Last year we kinda supported a cheap camera thyme.

Yeah Cal, that lens is cool. I'm still hung up on the fact that it focuses the opposite way of Leica. Glad you are liking the D3x!

John,

Its just another camera that is small format that can give me medium and large format results if I nail extraordinary technic.

I can see me one day doing stitched panoramas with either a PC lens (Nikon) or using the Noct-Nikkor for that large format ultra shallow DOF effect. The D3X definately has some performance potential like my Monochrom.

Likely again I will defer printing to annoy people, but this time color. I can see me one day owning one of those 200 pound floor standing Epson Printers to print color.

Cal

John,

Boy this is trouble. I'm not so keen on 7-11's in NYC. How many do I have to rob to get this camera in the link. I don't see much distinction between the advanced photo and the "M." Would be mighty cool if the new camera was "MM" engraced on the top plate.

Also I kinda like the CCD look of my Monochrom, and PopFlash has a nice chrome one with less than 100 actuations for only $4.3K.

I'll be playing the lottery later today.

Cal

Well Cal, you have the CCD model... I'd wait to see what the next few weeks brings. I'm not sure of any CMOS Monochrome cameras. Maybe in the MF world. It should be noted that Leica rumors doesn't have this news. Perhaps it is BS?

John,

I still love my Monochrom and it is not going anywhere. The reason I mention the steep drop in pricing on Monochrom's is I would like to get a backup, and I don't think this camera will ever have a true replacement.

A CMOS monochrome version of the M-240 would be just another interesting and different camera. I'm not sure I need the high ISO (rarely go above 800), although the big buffer is welcomed. Not sure if my Monochrom has an advantage of pixel size over number of pixels.

Then there is the D3X, a very capable camera that allows further growth and dimention. I'm learning that 50 RAW files eats 2 Gigs of memory, meanwhile my Monochrom can get 428 shots on a 16 Gig SD card. I don't understand because my logic is that the output from a 24.5 MP sensor should translate into about 1/3rd less shots on a 16 Gig card for the D3X???

Pretty exciting for me...

Cal I was looking at the DK-17M.. You think it makes a big difference in manual focus?

Jeff,

Magnification is 1.2 making the VF'er overall magnification 0.90 more like a M3. For me there is a big difference. I have no problem manually focusing on just the ground glass. I don't think I need any focusing aids like a split prism, but this is just me.

Only costs about $35.00 new. Came out originally for the F5, but it fits F3HP prisms. I bet on a DF it would be great.

Certain cameras (Nikon's one of them) vary file sizes (I guess based on what is recorded) so the number of shots remaining on the card is only an estimate. The Leica shows you the exact number of shots remaining and the file size is the same on a shot by shot basis.

John,

I learned this over the weekend. I maximized (Calzoned) the camera for monsterized Raw files (14-bit), and reduced the functions of the camera to a more basic calling.

My camera came with a trial 2GB compact flash card and the way I had configured the camera I would only get 38 shots on 2 GB, but in use I got 70 shots before filling the card. It is kinda scary how long it takes to download files on a maxed out powerbook. Post processing I expect will be also slower and not so immediate. Shots and colors look wonderfully detailed on my Eizo.

I think I will use 16 GB cards with RAW only and overflow from the first card slot to the second. BTW it takes seriously longer time to download the files from the D3X. True monster files. Like the Monochrom the D3X requires perfect technic and exposure to get great results, otherwise it is an unforgiving camera, just like the MM.

I rigged the D3X as a huge set of brass knuckles using a Nikon AH-4 handstrap. So far I'm loving the 45/2.8P and Noct-Nikkor on the D3X. I think the 50 "E60" will pretty much be the fashion lens, but I still have to get the Leitax adapter. With the 45/2.8 the handling makes for a fast shooter, but the Noct-Nikkor makes the camera into a heavy porker. Wide open shots with the Noct-Nikkor are extra dreamy.

Cal

Cal,

When you use the D3X, think of it as you are shooting slides.

John

John,

Thanks, I quickly found that it likes a perfect exposure. The files are really amazing, but again they are scary big. Already stunning results.

Really funny though how quickly a Nikon fomats a Compact Flash in a blink of an eye.
