NYC - small galleries/museum recommendations?

My wife and I will be in NYC for three days at the end of Dec. 27-29th and we're looking for gallery/museum recommendations that are a bit out of the ordinary. We've been the the Guggenheim, MoMA, Whitney (personal favourite) and the other big ones and was wondering if there are some smaller venues that are worth visiting.

Photography based or not is fine - preference for interesting internal spaces and interesting work.

Rob - thanks for that. I'm a huge fan of Penn and have been fortunate enough to see his multi-hit pt/pl prints from his Small Trades series however I've never seen his still life prints. I'll fit this into our visit to mid-town (where we typically go for our favourite bowl of ramen).

I was recently in Manhattan and finally had a chance to go to the Leica Gallery. It's small and you'll drool over all the Leica's in the case but they have a good show right now from Life Magazine.
