oh crap! another first world problem!

My laptop is slow too Joe. A least every time my missus get on it. She always moans about it. I'm usually on the ipad. My PC has a problem too at the moment, the clock won't keep time correctly.

Joe, get the lower-end non-retina macbook and add on the big thunderbolt display.

That's what we got our daughter who will be leaving in the Fall for film school. Sob.

Joe, if I recall, you have an iPad. If so, I'd consider getting a desktop Mac to replace the Macbook. So much more bang for the buck.

I have the 11" MacBook Air (8gb ram) and I love it. Have an Eizo screen on order for office and a 27" Dell at home so a small laptop that fits in most of my camera bags is an easy choice for me.

i use the macbook like a desktop...it never moves...i have a 22inch monitor attached as well.

Well, then you only need the lower-end laptop anyway.

It costs, but good bang for the buck. Get it with as much memory as possible (I think it will swallow 8 GB).

I upgrade laptops every 4-5 years. About the same rate I upgrade digital cameras. At this point in technology you really don't need much. Also computers don't really slow down, the requirements of modern applications just gets greater. Care to elaborate on how your computer seems to be sluggish? Often the perception of a computer slowing down is the result of background applications using up CPU and RAM resources.

Also if you have a macbook that just sits on a desk anyway a Mac Mini is exactly what you need. It would just plug in seamlessly and you can use your already existing monitor and accessories. it's also a fraction of the cost.

Guys- let me start off by saying I take no responsibility for anything that happens to your PC's or laptops as a result of following this advice. This is my caveat. This is for windows, sorry I don't use a MAC.

That said, If you do the following you may see significant improvement on your machines:

Most programs you use will leave *.tmp / *.temp files on your computer, Over time these files will pile up and can consume a lot of disk space and slow your machines down. To clear these files click start > run and type in CMD then press enter, a small black window will pop up. If your on a Win7 machine then simply click Start and the type CMD in the search programs and files field. In this black window type or copy/paste:

Del /a /f /q /s C:\*.tmp

and then

Del /a /f /q /s C:\*.temp

This will only clear out temp files. If you've never done then this before it may take a little time to complete but be patient. The clean up typically takes 5 min to 10/15 minutes tops).

Thank me later ;)

If that's the case, then you really should have a desktop. I love laptops, but you get a lot more value in a desktop. The current Mac Mini is a beast of a machine.

Back Alley- you may find this string interesting... again if your uncomfortable with laptop OS's, please don't be angry with me if something happens.

i actually run the disk utility occasionally...it used to make a bigger difference.
part of the slower running is using pse with the fujis...my rd1 had much smaller files and the mac processed them faster.
i also notice now that some websites run slower more frequently than before.

any disadvantages to the mini?

If you're moving from laptop-as-dektop to a mini, none. If you had a "proper" desktop and used some special PCI cards, then you'd have to figure out how to get those to work, but in your situation, a mini would be a perfect replacement for your laptop. The mini has HDMI and thunderbolt outputs, so you'll probably need a different cable for your monitor, but you can keep your keyboard and mouse and other peripherals (even firewire, since the Mini has a FW 800 output still, and FW 800 to 400 adaptors are cheap). The mini even has a built in SDXC slot on the back, if you'd like to use that for transferring your images.

any disadvantages to the mini?

I have a Mac Mini at work, and an iMac at home, the Mac Mini is noticeably slower, but the brand new Mac Minis are somewhat faster than the one I have. I think if I had my time again, I would not have got the iMac, but instead got the best Mac Mini and maxed out the RAM.

I don't like the built in screens as I own a few computers, and like to share a screen among many computers.

I love computers, I work and play with them, but I don't really believe in spending big bucks on them, as there is always something better and cheaper round the corner.

i mostly surf the net and use pse/lightroom. i originally bought the macbook thinking i'd take it with me but that never really happened.
if i get another computer i might take the macbook travelling so i could process images but i have used the ipad/snapseed for that with satisfactory results till i got home to make improvements when needed/wanted.
