Oh my god! I bought a film camera! Whats next?

Congratulations on the purchase.

I enjoy using Ilford film for B&W, HP5 and Pan F Plus 50 are my favorites but have also used the HP4 and Delta 400 as well. If you do get a urge to try some color, the Kodak Porta 160 or 400 are very nice.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

BTW welcome to the dark side
Whats next?
Youll submit to the great church of RODINAL
You'll get a TLR or another MF camera.
Youll build a Darkroom.
Filmcameras and lenses acumulate (maybe they breed in the corners, on shelves and under your bed).
Youll get a freezer and a fridge for film and paper
Youll get intriqued about LF photography and buy a Large Format Camera.
MF cameras acumulate
Youll install one more freezer and fridge for film and paper
Youll build a bigger darkroom
Youll get bigger LF cameras and then ULF cameras.
Youll start doing wet collodion and alternative printing techniques
And now thing really begin to evolve.... :D
Best regards

At which point is my wife leaving the house?!?!

I pick up the XA in two hours. Will clean it quick sitting in the car and jump into the next store to buy an Ilford XP.

Strange times...

Im at the point where MF cameras acumulate and I think, Im not sure but I think, mine is still there. Maybe its because of the pile of cameras in front of the bedroom door. :)
Ahh just like Xmas. Let the fun begin and happy shooting.

Be sure to ask about the negatives BACK

Be sure to ask about the negatives BACK

Did you mean Olympus XA 4 ?
That's one of the neatest camera.

Start with C-41 films like Ilford XP2, that way you can drop it at your film lab and enjoy your first result. It's exciting.
If you like it, then start with the B&W that you can develop yourself.

Processing labs for 35mm are rapidly dropping the return of negs and only offering prints and/or CD's back. No option for return of negs on B/W and color print.

I only have two options left for return of negs in my area... Fred Meyer stores with their one hour lab machine and Walgreen Drug one hour. The young lady at Walgreen is telling me she is fighting off losing her current machine and still returning negs.

Spark a surge in home developing, perhaps a crack at Caffenol (Instant coffee and Vitamin C?)

Ask about your negatives if that's important to you.

Most important item overlooked.

  • You will buy or lease a small defunct restaurant to get a Walk In cooler for Film and Paper.
  • You will turn part of the buillding into an even bigger darkroom.
  • You will take on a partner in the building to put in a Latte shop, Sandwich Deli and Internet Cafe to support your film enterprise.
  • You will provide jobs for your children or grandchildren that will help put them through college
  • You will start making quite a bit of money as you start providing wet film processing and printing to a growing clientele, to go along with the resurgence of film.
  • People will flock from miles around, just to meet and get the signature of the man who defied the "death of film" and who started films rebirth and the ensuing death of digital.
  • You will write a book on your experiences, called "The Resurrection Film, The Second Coming of Kodak"

Last, a bronze statue will be cast in your likeness, holding up to your eye an Olympus OM4Ti. It will be mounted atop a fountain/water feature in center of the park block in your town square.

You will be buried with your XA in your suit pocket and two rolls of some new film (obviously B/W) in the other pocket of your suit jacket. The film will NOT be dated for expiration, as that problem will be solved and film will be fresh for eternity.

I've always wanted to use that emoticon... first applicable chance!!!

Dont ask me why, I have no idea.

There was an offer near my door and I bought an Olympus XA. (edit, not 40)
Only 35 Euros and it is near perfect (says the seller... ;) ).
OK. The first film camera in my life.

Whats next?
Plan to use it for B/W.

Which film is to buy???

Very exited,
Rainer

That's OK. I n the past 6 months I have bought an XPAN and a black Leica M2 to keep my silver one company. The new one hasn't even arrived yet.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I proudly present:

:)

Its in perfect outer condition. The lightseals are not very good, but thats normal after over 30 years. I found a webside were they show how to remove the old pieces and glue in new foam.

On my way to the camera seller I stumbled into a few shops and bought the Ilford FP4 and the AGFA APX 100. The AGFA Vista Plus is a present from the seller.

The XA is a real beauty. I never thought that is is so solid made. Everything works smooth as fare as I can see. The batteries are new and the selftimer is running fine.

Will start tomorrow with the Ilford FP 4.

BTW, the girl in the shop who sells me the AGFA APX told me that I can also let the film develop in negatives and order a CD with scans without printing any pics. So I can check the pics on the computer and let than make proffesionell scans and prints.

So here we go the first roll is ready. It took the local photo store over a week to develop the roll, print the 24 pics and making a CD. The shop total was 30 Euros (around $40)!!!
The first roll cost me more than the camera... ;-)

The pics are strange, but I like them. Here a few:

And at last a self portrait in the mirror of a public washroom.

Thanks to every for your support,
Rainer

nice photos... a bit expensive but
nice photos nevertheless. if this
grows on you, you will find ways
to reduce costs in shooting and
developing film, while having fun
at the same time.

I share your passion for the XA. It's most of the time in my pocket. Regarding development and printing I'd have a look to Rossmann. It's less expensive.

Regards from the south-west

Udo
