Oh My Goodness (digital OM)

we live in interesting time. How soon will Nikon follow with Nikon F-D?
Btw, am I the only one who is missing dedicated retro shutter speed dial on OM-D, and aperture rings on MTF lenses?

Igor,
Of course we do.
That's one of the unique feature of the original OM.
To add insult to injury, even the P&S Canon S90 has a control dial around the lens mount. In this digital age, that dial can control anything, not just shutter speed. It just makes sense.

But what can you and I do?
OM-D is 90% of what people (read: Olympus fans) want and Olympus had to start somewhere.

As nice as this little jigger is, and I'd definitely have one, it chips away at what we frequently seem to fight for around here ... and that's film's future.

When I see RFF folk, whom I know to be fairly die hard film users, frothing at the gills over these digital marvels I feel a little sad. Cameras like this aren't really killing film directly but they're certainly giving more and more people less reason to bother with the analog process!

Hey, I am technically a digital guy (started with digital, adopted film later)... unlike Earl (Trius) :p :D

Kidding aside, I think cameras like OM-D should have a positive on digital people regarding film because there's a chance that they will become curious about the real OM cameras that inspired it.

And once they check out the film OM cameras, some of them will be hooked (just the way I did). GAS is GAS, man. :)

Well, not according to.....

Well, not according to.....

Hasn't Canon had something similar for a couple of years? Up, down, and rotation?

According to the reports, 5 axis is a world first in this camera. I would like to think Olympus would not brag on this if it were not so. Of course I realize they have been putting out other fires lately.

What is Canon? And would their stabilization be for some sort of targeting system on a military weapon that lobs large explosive charges many miles.

No wrong boxes ticked here!

Agreed. Except that it's still a 4/3 sized sensor. Fine for most no doubt, but I want that physical space.

It's also interesting how it keeps the SLR design, while Fuji is going for rangefinder design. It doesn't matter at all since it's electronic, but will be interesting to see what people like more.

They really trust their weather proofing.

Olympus weather-proofing has always been... proven:

I have to reluctantly agree that EVF's are the future, but I don't see to many articles devoted to this topic. I like watching TV, but even the most expensive screens aren't anything like just plain old looking out of the window..
True. But OK, try to take a photo with a window pane. Go ahead and wait for an OVF that equals an OM-4 vf. How many photos will you miss during the wait?

I bought 3 mini-PEN kits on ebay with tiny pancake, kit zoom & long lenses for them. They hang by little string loop on my desk lamp. Haven't seen the E-M5 version yet. When I do, I'll probably buy both black and silver sets. Full size, I can only afford the black one I've ordered. :)

Olympus M1

Olympus M1

In 1972, when Olympus brought out the original small SLR, they pissed off Leica. The new camera was branded the Olympus M1.

Well, Leica immediately jumped in Olympus' shorts and very few M1's left the Olympus factory without being changed to OM-1. Very rare... the Oly M1 fetches high prices when they turn up.

I have one that I traded a red dial Leica IIIf for in Japan in 1975. I gave it to my dad when I got back. He just gave it back to me. It has some desilvering of the prism due to the foam problem, but is otherwise in pretty good shape for a used camera. If there is any interest in it, I might be willing to deal. pm me if so.

There is one on ebay now for $975 US. It's a relisting by a big German seller. No takers so far at that price.

Two interesting things I read today:

- The sensor is *not* the same one that is on whatever that Panasonic camera everyone seem to be touting. G3? GH3? GVXH3? whatever... (I have zero interest in *any* camera body from Pansonic; I like some of their lenses, but only because I can use it on my E-P2). This should be interesting because with a new sensor, the hardware limit has been pushed, not just software tweaking.

- Pre-orders of E-M5 beats the Fuji X-1 PRO ??? now that's surprising.

As evidenced by the E-300 and Pana DMC-L1

Not suprising... a lot cheaper and despite what people around her might think, people seem to actually prefer the SLR style body to a RF style body.

The Olympus E300, while a very capable camera, emulated a rangefinder body. It was not well received in the general market place. The ensuing E500 was given a prism hump, changing the acceptance factor considerably in favor of SLR styling.

The average person wants a hump!!!...so to speak.

And many of us already have M43 lenses, while Fuji's X-mount and lenses are new. Fuji plans to offer an M-mount adapter, but there are already M43 adapters for those and many other lenses.
