... I've bought a nice secondhand Bessa R2, that's what.

I had no intention of ever shooting film again, it's this damned place that got me thinking about it.

Sigh, time to start thinking about buying what I need to develop my own negs.

I hate you all 🙂

Ah, the second curse today. We must be doing something right 😉 Enjoy the R2, FrankS posted almost the perfect shopping list for film development in a thread just the other day.

I'll hunt that down, thanks.

Wow, it's Alternative-Thanksgiving day. 😉

The Bessa-R2 is a good camera; excellent value for the money. I personally don't like the shutter noise, but the handling is fine, the heft is much improved over the Bessa-R, and best of all, it has an all-mechanical shutter.

I didn't keep mine because I was going through a very financially-tight period (a long one). I kept the Bessa-R over the R2 mainly for economical reasons.

That extra shutter speed of 1/2000 is very welcome during the daytime.

Yes, the shutter's a bit louder than my R-D1s, but nothing I can't live with.

What's the metering like? The Epson meter generally slightly underexposes, don't know if that's true of its parent cameras.

Ian

I have an R and am pleased with the metering. I find it to about right. The only problem I have had was in Mesa Verde when the sun light bore directly on the dwellings, a sandstone color. The negatives were about one stop underexposed. My failure to account for the harsh light. Overall I like the Bessas!

I love my R...I was very tempted to trade it in for an R2 or R3 series model, but for me it's not really worth the extra money that ought to be spent on lenses.

My metering seems fine on my Bessa. I usually bracket and shoot print (negative) film instead of transparencies. Maybe it's because I grew up shooting with a Nikon F, but I feel like the metering can't be as accurate as what I am seeing in the finder. Just my own fears getting in the way of my photography!

Hoping to get out and shoot the first roll today, if the weather holds (it's been raining ever since I bought the camera).

I'm quite excited 🙂

Ian

Behave 🙂

I will probably end up with a Leica body one day, but I'm in no rush. Some Leica glass is more likely in the medium term I reckon.

Ian

Well, it was a great day for photography today, beautiful weather and good light, so I shot a roll. Nice camera to use, not very different from my R-D1s apart from being a bit lighter and with a slightly different meter indicator in the VF. I enjoyed using it. Only problem is I have to wait to see what the results are like, curses 🙂

I see a basic developing setup being acquired in the next couple of weeks, and then the saving begins for a scanner... Argh, it never ends.

Ian

It is always nice to see another soul saved 😉

Congrats, it is a very nice camera. Metering on my R2A seems to be spot on relative to my handheld and Leica cameras.

Developing is easy. Standardize on something simple, one film, one developer:

1) Tri-X
2) xtol or HC-110
3) fixer
4) developing tanks (I prefer stainless steel ones for ease of loading wet)
5) a bathroom or cloakroom that can be light-proofed
6) kitchen timer
7) thermometer
8) latex gloves
9) squeegee
10) hanging clips

That's about it, after that, it is all about practice to optimize your personal times on specific film/developer combinations.

Congrats again 🙂

Good advice Tom. I used to develop many years ago, but it's been a while. I'm secretly looking forward to getting back into it.

Me came back also recently too.
In fact, I went so far as to sell all my digital gear.

Visit my gallery:

Most of the recent ones are taken with the Bessa R2.

btw, what lens is that you have on?

The lens is a Canon 50/1.2 LTM, a chunky and heavy beast. I'm not planning to ditch digital (I love my R-D1s), but it'll be good to have a second body without a 1.5 crop factor when I want my CV 21/4.0 to be properly wide rather than the 30mm or so it is on the Epson.

I like your HK cityscapes, some good stuff with the CV 15.

Welcome to our cornor of hell and may you burn for eternity with the rest of us...🙂

BTW...don't think for a minute you are going to stop at one R2.

Well, the deed is done: chemistry, changing bag, Paterson tank, reels, etc etc are all on the way to me after a morning of online shopping 🙂
