OK Folks, what is Missing? How can we improve RFF ?

Hi Jorge

What about loading to tge gallery from a url (such as flickr).
This was available in the past. Can it return with the new gallery?

Its easy enough to do but the problem with this approach is that we can violate some copyright rules and open up the door for issues. Someone could load a photo from another location without permission.

I don't mean to sound argumentative but. Couldn't someone do that from their desktop as well? (downloading a stolen image and posting it)

Storing everything full size on Flickr and Cloud storage has become part of my workflow. I'm sure others do the same.
Being able to load from those locations would be so very nice !

Just saying :)

An upload from your desktop leaves a cookie trail to a physical file on your desktop thus placing responsibility on the person who uploaded the file.

I understand your concerns and I too have tried to justify it with your reasoning which may be 100% valid. But from what I have read it could be problematic. If I could be shown otherwise I would be more than glad to comply :)

Thanks for the reply Jorge! I hope someone else can chime in with a work around.

There is a fine balance between large and too large. Typically, I don't like to go wider than 2000 pixels.

Without taking a poll, I can't prove it but my guess is that more people are using laptops and tablets these days. A 2,000 pixel image just won't fit on their screens. Why not go for 850 x 600, which will fit everything except smart phones? Also, just think of the disk space and bandwidth saved! :)

Only logged-in members can post to the gallery, and to source restricted content that way they often will have to be a member on the source site as well, so they are one or two much easier options to identify a copyright violator. I don't think having a third line of defense is worth the hassle.

I am glad there will not be a "Like" button. Thank you for that. It's a meaningless click that does nothing to enhance the conversation. I recently saw people "Like" my cousin's post on the big social site about my Grandfather passing away. To me, that was crazy. That's why I hang out here, and not on the FriendFace.
Condolences on the passing away of your grandfather.

I think your cousins friends only wanted to convey their sympathy but were lost for words and the "like" button is the only thing Facebook offers.....

When I'm going through the ads and I click on Super size it always pops up as a small window in the corner. Is there a way to get it to pop up full screen or other so I do not have to keep re-sizing the windows?

True, a bit silly. For whatever reason, I get a larger pop-up with IE than on Chrome.

It bothers me that anytime I go to the Gallery, clicking on Home opens the home page in another tab. If going to the gallery from home takes me there in the same tab then I should be able to go from the gallery to Home the same way. I use Firefox because RFF doesn't play nice with IE.

The gallery home page will now show a random photo from the gallery at the top instead of the few that were featured.

remove the 30 second delay between searching. I don't know how many times I've accidentally double clicked the new posts button at the top and had to wait 30 seconds for no real reason. I'm pretty sure out of all the forums I'm a member of this is the only one that has that "feature"

There is a real reason. It is to not to overload the server.

There is a real reason. It is to not to overload the server.

Five seconds (or even two) would take care of that, as rogue crawler requests, the only request type whose load impact can successfully be throttled by timeout values, tend to come at a frequency much higher than one per second.

Manual requests will be repeated in any case, and as there are other users as well, it averages out - there will be no load difference whether the repetition of any individual request comes after a second or thirty (or indeed any delay shorter than the average page read time).

Oh, and you might look at mod_bandwith, mod_security, mod_qos and other load management modules for apache - there are more effective ways to prevent server overload than a permanent hard request rate limit that strikes even when the server is idle.

This weekend work will be done on updating the classified software. Please have patience as they may be growing pains.

Thanks,
Stephen

Looks like my input won't make the cut, but here it is anyway.

Pricing in the Classifieds is by default in US dollars.

Although you can specify a currency in the creation of the ad, unless it is specifically NOT in USD, nothing is said in the ad. That will lead to problems for many of your users. I would like the ad to explicitly state $US unless something else is specified. I just lost a sale after many PM's back and forth of negotiation because the buyer assumed that, living in Canada, I was pricing in Canadian dollars, basically a 9% discount at the moment.

I suspect this is especially a problem for your Canadian members, and for some reason there seems to be a disproportionate number of us on RFF. I suspect the Aussies have the same beef.

Cheers, eh?
Dez

Hi, thank you for considering our opinions.

I think RFF should go back to the basics.

We should concentrate in rangefinder gear, technique and pictures, perhaps Reflex and those mirrorless fujis that profit from their RF aesthetics similarity should go to specific forums outside RFF.

If we keep giving too much credit to leicas, fujis, sonys t,x,w,z or whatever that look like but are not RF´s we will end up leaving REAL RF´s in a museum...and the principal goal of RFF is to keep and deepen the knowledge and now how of rangefinderS which is a culture and a way of shooting totally different from mirrorless, reflex or cell phones.

But we should keep P&S cameras since they are totally complementary equipment and serve many times when RF´s are unwillingly left at home

IMHO

OK Folks,

What can I do as an administrator to improve RFF ?
I am open to suggestions.

I am not so much looking for tiny improvements,
as I am for BIG improvements and/or Added Features.

And PLEASE, no comments about the moderation. It is a given that Moderation is a constant battle which can by definition NEVER satisfy Everyone.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Stephen
