Not to make this a long story, but when we moved from one house to another, things vanished here and there. I dug up today the EPSON 3170 scanner. I would like to use it for 120 film. No film holders can be found. The BetterScanning website offers improved film holders for $100 or so. Has anyone here tried those and would I need to replace the film holders that came with the EPSON?

Hi Raid, I'm not familiar with that scanner but you might want to call epson support and tell them about it. I've read they'll mail you one out, free if I remember right, perhaps for a small fee.

I use betterscanning.com holders for 120. I have a cheap Canon flatbed scanner for 120 film. In my view betterscanning.com holders have been a good buy. They keep your negs straight in all conditions which is needed for a good scanning result. Same holder can be used with several scanner models (at least with Canon).

This is a good suggestion. I want scanning for web posting of 120 film results.

Mablo,
Do you need to use bolders better scanning holders in addition to the EPSON holders or alone?

The Betterscanning holders are used in place of the OEM holders. For me,
paying a hundred bucks for holders for a 30-40 dollar scanner off the 'bay
is a little silly. I'd get the items I mentioned, <$9 plus shipping and if you
like the results, get the ANR insert for that holder ($35 including shipping)
from Doug at Betterscanning. my 2c

I agree with your logic. So I get the OEM holders and then the ANR insert.

Got the same scanner.

Bought a glass plate from the local glass shop. $1.
Does not have ANR. Note, you can't use ICE with ANR in case you ever scan color. I don't.

IIRC, Doug's neg holders for the 3170 also work for the v500/600 (but not >=700), so it may be worthwhile if you would upgrade at some point.

The OEM holder only scans one neg at a time, Doug's two (may be even 3 for 6x6).

Always wondered if the v600 oem works in the 3170 - it should. If so, I would rather buy that one because you could scan more negs at the same time.

So I could just get a $1 piece of glass and try my scanner out.

I use the Better Scanning kit on my V700, a great improvement over the stock parts. The ANR glass I think in particular is great, as it does not matter how curled the negs are, they just get flattened out.
