Ricoh GXR
I ditched the NEX after a couple months and have continued to shoot the GXR with M lenses only. After a year, I'm still happy, but do want to see Ricoh bring out a full frame module. Here's to hoping.

I basically agree with everything that Adanac has said in this post. I own the gxr, nex5n and the xp1. I would add that there are two minus on the gxr that could affect the decision, between the gxr and Nex, slower sd write speed and external evf is not as good. Nex overall UI is the worst period.

The only reason I have not gotten rid of my Nex5n is that it is my universal digital back.. If that was not the case, it would have been gone a long time ago.

The xp1 w/ m adapter can be used with your legacy m gear.. It has both 3x and 10x mag but is missing focus peaking. Like the gxr it has 6 customizable lens settings for lens corrections. 2 have lens length customization, the other four are fix focal length positions. Lens info not used in evf/LCD mode, but is useful if u are using ovf and shooting zone..

If you sell your M9, do it quick as the used prices even from shop are dropping very fast.You can easily get a used one for not Mutch then 3200 pound from a dealer and I'm sure there open to offer.

Okay, if it isn't going to be an M9, what is next best?

Suppose, I am thinking of selling my M9. And M-Milestone is too far away and frankly too expensive.

What is next best? Oh, I am excluding the M8. Been there, didn't like it.

Is it limited to 4/3rds cameras?

Oh, I plan to keep all my M and R lenses.

So if it is 4/3rds cameras, which one(s) are emerging at the top of the heap for image quality and ease of use?

Must one be using RAW on those cameras? e.g. I find I don't like the images given by my GF1, but maybe because I don't shoot RAW on it.

there is no such a thing as the best thing digital old timer. For some people m9 is the best camera for them , some 5d mark ii..

I dream of owning an m9 and i know i won't own one in a while because i am attending an expensive ass school , i am on federal aid and federal loan and jobs are limited. I had to work 3 different part time jobs for an entire year and summer included to buy an m6.. Until i pay my federal loan in 5 years i won't have the luxury of spending something that is above my rent on a nice apartment and the cost of a healthy diet and a gym membership

People buy digital Ms because they are used to the M rangefinder experience , there are a lot of full frame DSLRS that beat the M in terms of iso performance , shutter speed , and so on.. The old world style Zeiss manual focusing lenses on the DSLRS produce very nice bokeh and can give you the leica lens feeling , and you can use R lenses on a DSLR

me too , m9 was more expensive when it came out then the Milestone..

For me it will be the new M. If I looked at the next best option it would always be that for me and I would always want the Milestone. My attitude is always get the best that I can afford.

I'm even contemplating the RX1. I shoot a ZM25/2.8 on the GXR more often than any other lens, effectively a 38mm field of view.

The extra stop, slight bit wider, plus more control over depth of field, would all be very useful to me, as would... autofocus. Yes, I want autofocus[1], at least on some lenses or a camera and it might as well be the one I use the most, and the AF lens must have decent manual over-ride[2].


[1] Decent autofocus, meaning relatively quick not zombie-like auto hunting. The X100 and I did not get along because it's autofocus often had issues and its manual focus was inept.

[2] Not expecting absolute wonders but AF has to be usable 80% of the time and manual focus has to be really usable for the remaining 20%. That's not asking too much is it?

Failing that I remain with the GXR and no other for now.

If not a Leica M system, Rd-1 is still the only other true digital rangefinder. A brand new RD-1x can be purchased for less than $1800.

m1 is not for photography. M1 does not have a rangefinder patch. M1 is made for medical and scientific purposes to use on a microscope or telescope. Nice Try.
