So what's a C-mount? And is there an adapter that will mount a C-mount lens on an M39 type body? It seems there are C to M42 type adapters. What's the story here? Where can i get more information? Like, what are the technical parameters, and stuff?

I'm assured that there are people who know these things. I'm just not one of them.

Thanks for your wisdom.

MaxView Plus shown with included 30mm microscope adapter tube installed. The 30mm microscope tube is also internally threaded with a female "C" or "CS" mount. This adapter will fit many stereo (dissecting) microscopes in place of an eyepiece. The internal threads will also screw onto C and CS mount photo tubes. Many other optical devices also use the common C/CS video mount.

Most surveillance CCTV cameras also use C/CS mount lenses. Pentax is a big manufacturer for such lenses, with apertures going well over (or under?) 1.0. The register for such mount is very short, only a few centimetres, so it will be strange to mount it on a SLR body. Also current C/CS mount for CCTV lenses cover tiny nail-sized CCD sensors, another reason not to use it on regular film cameras.

C-Mount is originally for 16mm movie cameras, and is also used for TV cameras and specialty sensors. It is a 25mm thread mount. There are two varients: the traditional back-focus for movie cameras and most TV cameras, and a "compact" with reduced back-focus. C-Mount lenses do not have enough coverage or back-focus to be used with 35mm cameras. Adapters exist for LTM, Nikon, and many others to be used on C-Mount. They correct for the back-focus to the original style. Extension tubes exist to use traditional c-mount lenses on the reduced back-focus cameras.

My first video camera was an RCA with a 2/3" Vidicon tube and it also had a C mount.
Both back-focus and imaging circle would make such lenses unsuitable for 35mm
or APS-C digital.
