Hi everyone,
I just went to a local photo flea market and scored a great looking pristine leather case for my R-D1. However, the interior has that red"velvet" texture to keep it from scratching the camera. Given the age of the cas, I am not surprised to see that stuff come off on the camera.
does anyone know how to fix that? I thought of maybe spraying it with artist's fixatif to maybe "glue" the fibres together, but thought I would ask here first.

BTW, the case is too tight to fit the RD1 inside with a new layer of that "velvet" stuff, and I tried unsuccesfully to remove it altogether.

Unfortunately most Velvet is made from filament yarns, and it’s probably the silk or rayon filaments actually snapping, having become brittle through age, I don’t think “fixing” would help you really need to coat it in something to glue them together.

Check the cotton or linen stitching in the case itself isn’t going the same way; you don’t want the case failing at the seams and spilling the camera

If you can't fix it - most Kiev 4 case work for the R-D1, as they have about the same base shape and the tripod screwmount at the approximately same place. Would be a reason to buy one of these cameras 🙂... See also here for two pics.

Given the potential sensor/dust issues, I'd stay away from cases that are molting. There's probably no end of places that stuff can work its way into.

I am currently using an Optech neoprene case on my R-D1. The rangefinder size version they sell is a tad tight but it works. It's good protection for transport, etc. For use, you just drop the whole case; it has two different attachment methods so you don't lose it or have to stow it. One is attaching the supplied tether to an o-ring around the lens; the other is attaching it to a nylon screw in the tripod bush. I'm pretty pleased (as pleased as any case is likely to make me, which is a kinda/sorta proposition at best 😀 ).
