old industar-22 50mm (rigid) problems

greetings - glad to find this forum. recently returned from a trip to bucharest where i picked up some new (old) lenses.

i bought an old industar 22 50mm - rigid (not the collapsible one). it attaches fine to my NEX (with my M39 adapter), but i couldnt get it to focus.

after taking it apart to clean it and re-lube it i tried again with no luck.

but i noticed a screw at the back on the lens that was holding the whole barrel in place. if i unscrew it i can easily focus by turning the barrel.

is this normal? i am admittedly, a noob, regarding this stuff. just wanted to make sure im not missing anything.
(ive been making some nice pics with it since then, by the way!)
 
You have quite a rare lens there, I've never seen instructions on how to dismantle one. Generally, the older lenses are quite well made and give few problems. One question is, how far off is the focus? Another would be how confident are you that your adapter gives the correct spacing for the lens (i.e. have you tried other lenses successfully)?
 
wolves - thanks for the reply - yeah, i suspected this could be the case. ive ordered a m42 adapter and a 39 to 42 converter ring to try out different spacing. the way it is now (without that back pin) it focuses great, but its hard to quickly focus to infinity and there is the risk that whole barrel falls out of the lens if it screwed too far out!
 
Is your lens possibly an enlarger lens?
There are versions of the rigid I-50 lens that were made for enlargers and I wonder if your I-22 is a similar variant?

Yeah, pretty clearly not an enlarger lens!
You said the lens wouldn't focus, do you mean it will not physically move (unless the screw is loosened) or do you mean it will not achieve focus regardless of where the lens is set?

Is this the "screw" you are talking about?:

I'm not expert enough to know what it is actually called but it does limit rotation of the lens and guides it back and forward when the lens is focused. If that pin were maladjusted, it might not let the lens move to focus.

Oisin, welcome to the forum!

I think you have a flange distance problem! You've mentioned an M42 adaptor with M42 to M39 converter ring, which adaptor should have infinity with the original M42 lenses (flange distance 45,50 or 45,46 mm if I'm right)... The FSU/Leica rangefinder lenses have 28,8 mm and this is why they do not have infinity, they work as macro lenses.

I think the problem could be solved wether with a dedicated LTM adaptor, or an Leica M adaptor with LTM conversion ring...

I can't open your Picasa gallery, but there are also early Industar-22s in M39 mount that were meant for the Zenit SLR. You won't get focus on any Leica or NEX with those, at least not with a longish adapter tube.
 
Hi rxmd!

The lens he bought it is indeed a rigid Industar 22 for rangefinder camera, only the Mir-1 (the other lens on the photo) was ment for the Zenits...


@ Oisin,
you can use your setup (M42 adaptor with M42-m39 converter ring) with the Mir lens, which is a SLR lens... Btw. some early Zenit M39 (zM39) lenses were built with 45,2 mm flange distance (but personally I've never had any problem when cross-mounted them).

rob - yes thats the "screw" - it was screwed in pretty tight when i got the lens, which prevented the lens from moving at all, so im thinking someone had been messing around with it.

but the fact that the lens needs to be screwed out a few notches beyond where the screw would allow leads me to believe that there is a focal length issue.

i remember the clerk in the photoshop in bucharest talking about this issue for various lenses (like for the MIR that i bought) but not for this one.

ill check out that book - thanks - its a serious document! and ill try out some combinations of adapters when i get them in the mails.

I've come late to this discussion, have you solved the problem yet?
I agree that there is a flange distance problem.
My Zenit came with a rigid I-22 lens. One must look at them closely.
Wait! I have both right here!
The LTM lens for the rangefinder is 4 cm long
the I-22 for the Zenit is shorter 3 cm long.
A look at the photo you show does indeed look exactly like my LTM I-22

hi - i just got a package in the mail yesterday from hong kong; a m39-m42 adapter ring. i was hoping that this would extend the flange distance to the right amount but it turns out this wasnt the fix i hoped it would be.

so it seems that it has to do with the calibration/settings on the lens itself. the Maizenberg book does have quite a bit of information on this lens - but i havent had the time to sit down with it to really understand. for the time being ive left that screw out and have to be careful that i dont focus so far that the whole barrel plops out😕

will update when i can...
 
I don't know if it helps the discussion but I have a rigid Industar-22 which works fine on my Lumix GF1 m4/3 using a cheapo LTM to m4/3 adapter. What I would suggest is to see if you can find someone with a m4/3 camera + adapter and try in on that, if it works ok then it may suggest a problem with your LTM to Nex adapter.
