Old/new 35mm Ultron comparison?

I've bought one after I sold my Summicron 35 V4 to pay for the M9.
I have to admit that lens really performs! BUT I just don't like using it very much. I don't like that the close focus is closer than the RF coupling (I know that is important for all the adapter crazy folks) and I really don't like the focus ring. I would prefer a more standard solution over that gear wheel which I find uncomfortable. I also keep missing it and rather grab the aperture ring instead (that might just be a getting used to problem).
All in all I prefer my Summicron-C 40 over it (also size-wise) although the Ultron definitely is the better performer.

here we go! 🙂

Thank you very much erik for your "help" to decide about this lovely lens! There are really fine pictures in this thread...

I bought mine silver the past week and at first I was shocked by its size and weight, but whenI have tried it on my Sony A7 (I'm still waiting for my M5... it is on the way from Wien...) it has been very special.

I have no shots online in the moment to show it but I wanted to throw in that it performs excellent on the M9. Better than the 35/2 V4 and my 40/2 Crons.
I am still no fan of the design but I'm getting used to it.

I just got one of these hoods for my lens, Erik. Lovely hoods but now I'm wondering what you use as a cap on it. Any recommendation?

Thank you, uhoh, for this tip.

I've found the perfect shade for this lens: the Etsumi 46mm for Panasonic Lumix 20mm F 1.7. It is small, does not interfere in the viewfinder and does not vignette. All kinds of colors are available. I have a black one, looks great.

Erik.

35mm Ultron 1.7, LTM vs M-Mount

35mm Ultron 1.7, LTM vs M-Mount

Are there significant differences in image quality?

LTM version is much more attractively priced.

What are your experiences between the two?

Thanks for sharing your thought and experiences!

cheers,

Two totally different lenses. You can see the two models at the cameraquest site, where it's obvious the M mount is a substantially different design.

The above list starts at the wide end and moves on up the lens line. Just scroll down to the 35mm lens section.

The LTM lens is discontinued and was replaced by the new M mount lens, which has been optimized for digital sensors. I guess it all depends on what you plan to use the lens with. If film, I figure either will do. I just ordered the M mount lens to try with my M262 digital M.

The reviews of the M model look really, really good. I am currently using a 35mm f2 Summicron ASPH, which is excellent but is a sub-par performer against the light with some really nasty flare issues when the sun is the direct FOV or just off the periphery. The Ultron appears to be a winner against the light. I'll find out soon as it's supposed to be in my hands tomorrow.

I use the M mount version on digital Leica and it's as good as any Leica or Ziess lens I've owned or used. There are subtle differences in rendering between all those but the 35/1.7M is a very sharp lens already from wide open with a pretty flat plane of focus and no nasty surprises. As for shooing against the light, it's pretty good. Not necessarily perfect because it is possible to get it to flare a bit with the sun just out of the frame, but better than a lot of my Leica lenses. Best 35 I've used in respect to flare control has probably been the ZM 35/2.8. But the 35/1.7M is sharper than the ZM and IMO more consistent across the frame.

I briefly tried the LTM 35/1.7 maybe 4-5 years ago and wasn't really enamored by it. Not to say it was bad, just nothing really stood out about it, at that time.
