First shots out of my fixed lens Stylus Epic.
Quality looks good. I wish I'd taken some stationary shots so I could better judge.

I had picked up an Epic Stylus earlier this year basically because everyone said how good it is. Overall I don't really like the feel of the camera and wasn't too impressed with MY photos. Everyone else loves the camera and there photos seem great.

Well, it's got some serious limitations.
It is, after all, an almost completely brain dead point and shoot.
I've also read that it favors shutter speed over aperture and will not stop down adequately for some situations.
Overall though, I think it'll earn (in fun and function) the $20 I paid for it.

The epic is a handy little cam. I actually prefer the older f3.5 version. It's a little fuller-bodied and the trigger button is smoother.

I havent been able to tell if people who dont find the camera/lens sharp are having focusing issues or there are sample-to-sample variability to the camera. Users typically report excellent or poor results...not much in between...thoughts?

Your write up is the thing I read regarding aperture.
Nice job.

You do have to wonder at the thinking behind that. It would seem to be a simple thing to optimize a point and shoot's programmed exposure.
I'd select 1/60th and max the aperture. Faster shutter speed as necessary in bright light or with fast film and flash below 1/60th unless overridden.

Max dof seems the driving goal in a snapshot to me.

trip vs epic....

three problems with that comparison - WALMART processing, Kodak CN film and then web images...all three factors give inconsistent results.... also, I am not sure you see differences in contrast as much as differences in brightness levels....

Lastly, since there is no control on the Epic ( I dont know about the Trip ), how does one know you are comparing the same aperture ?

Dan

PS - if you look at his other comparison - http://www.flickr.com/photos/d2gallery/494652092/in/set-72157600186896457/

I think the Epic shows more contrast OR different brightness...
