OM-4 give away ... if you answer my question correctly.

I'd lose this competition. I never liked the OM-1. To me the OM-4 is the best 35mm SLR. The metering system is incredible; my OM-4T bodies are the only cameras I do not carry a handheld meter with when I use them.

That's Keith's deviousness Chris. A 4 would be excess baggage if you think the 1 is the best ever (as I do.) So perhaps your answer is the correct one. But you already have a T, so a regular 4 would be relegated to backup at best. Besides, I just looked at Lynn's picture again. How can you argue with that?

I was just being funny. I really don't need or want it. I have two 4T bodies, but no lenses for them. Had to sell them last year when I was struggling to survive before I got my teaching job. Hoping things go well and I can replace them soon. I miss shooting with my OM's

As I see a moment in time in all it's transcendence and beauty through my eye, there is an urge in me to pull out the extension of my eye. So I pull out of my camera from my bag. Without the need to meter, and by experience I adjust the buttery smooth shutter ring with my left hand, and knowing what f-stop I have, I focus with the lens. With an assured confidence I press the shutter button. In a smooth and elegant instant - I know that I have taken an image worth every effort. And it wasn't with a Leica, it was with my Olympus OM1 and a Zuiko 24/2.8.

I have never used one and I am not familiar with it.... I always thought that the Nikon FM2 was the best....but then again, I know very little about this sort of stuff.....

cheers, michael

I can understand that. Fortunately there are plenty of them (but threads like this just push the prices higher ...)

This has been a fun thread and the final result will be a space in my cabinet ... an extra bonus IMO.

Some of the responses brought a tear to the corner of my eye ... very touching! 😀

Lynnb's response however sent me searching for a box of tissues ... that photograph is a killer Lynn and the fact that you took it with an OM-1 all those years ago seals the deal for me .... so PM me your address and the OM-4 will be winging its way to you in no time at all.

To all the rest who played this silly game ... thank you for your participation ... it was fun. 🙂

Please forgive me, but as a non-user I can appreciate that the OM-1 was a good design which laid the groundwork for the modern obsession with small form factor SLRs (just as the Nikon F laid the groundwork for oversized professional SLRs even more effectively) but I can't see it as the best ever SLR. The shutter speed dial around the lens mount was an evolutionary dead end. The form factor was matched or exceeded since. And has SLR evolution completely ceased? My wife's Canon dSLR has full manual override on everything, or automatic so smart it makes me look beyond bad. And it shoots higher resolution than any colour film. And it's "half frame" equivalent.

Now maybe I'm wrong ... but how would I know if I never try an OM?

And since I'll never spend my own money on one, how will I know if I don't get one for free ...

;-)

Good choice...

A bit sorry I took so long on my "judo" response and missed the deadline ;-)

And of course ... the OM-1 being the best ever SLR is purely my own very subjective, shockingly biased opinion.

But everyone knew that ... and humoured me none the less! 😛

Thanks Keith! I still have a Zuiko 50/1.8 somewhere.. this will be fun! Looking forward to that lovely big, bright viewfinder...

My pleasure Lynn ... and rather good that I don't have to send it too far! 😀

You earned it mate ... that was the winning post the moment I saw it and I think most others felt the same way! 🙂
