OM-D E-M5 availability???????

I made a big mistake today and handled one at a Camerahouse store in NSW, Australia. Big, big mistake.

There was no lens on it, so once I explained to the sales person that she could use the lens off one of the Pens on display (yes, clueless!), I got to see a little bit of why everyone is so impressed. Inside the shop it was focusing VERY fast. I doubt whether my 7D would be any better. The one press focus and shoot from the rear screen is quite amazing.

The big test for me was the EVF. It was different but certainly sharp, clear and very usable.

My 'excuse' for purchase will be the weather sealing which comes in handy in my occupation. I do hope that they release some fast water primes soon.

One question for you Keith. Is it possible to accurately focus a legacy lens through the EVF without magnification?

Cheers - John

Hi John,

I haven't tried and don't really intend using legacy glass on mine ... but I can't see why not. The EVF has diopter adjustment and seems very sharp to me.

See this thread.

Depends on the aperture and your eyes. When I was shooting with the camera, I assigned one of the function buttons to activate the 2x digital crop. Frame, press, focus, press, shoot--if you opt for Raw+JPG shooting you can frame, press, focus, shoot--the JPG will be cropped, but the Raw will be the full field of view.

What a ******** I agree!

It's not like they're popular or anything I guess! 😀

Exactly.
And they stock Minolta Alpha.

One thing I don't get is why would they choose to doggedly compete with other local stores (and online) in Canon/Nikon market which already have razor-thin margin. While at the same time dismiss the whole potential new market with new cameras like OM-D or Fuji X-whatever.

I guess the art of creating new excitement is a lost art in brick and mortar shops nowadays. 😕

Keith, if you have the Oly 300mm, it works great with the E-M5 (as well as quite a few others!).

You preferred this over the Zoom function (5x,7x,10x,14x)?

For some reason, I couldn't get that to work without using the touch screen to trigger the zoom in--I only had the camera for about a week before I had it to pass it on to the next reviewer, so there's a good chance that I might have just not figured out how to use that entirely correctly. I found the 2x to be sufficient for focusing at f/1.4, although if I was pairing the camera with one of the f/0.95 Voigtlander lenses I could see some additional magnification being helpful.

That's handy to know ... I'm still coming to grips with the menu and what the camera is capable of!

Thanks. 🙂

The camera works great with legacy glass, because when you use focus assist (magnification) the in-body stabilization eliminates the shakiness that normally occurs.

I used a 105 Nikkor on it: with 5x magnification, without IBIS it's similar to using a 500mm tele...hard to hand hold, the view is very shaky. With IBIS and 5x mag, it's like shooting a normal! Everything is rock steady through the EVF.

Maybe we should have a dedicated OMD resource thread to be kept as a sticky ... I'm already finding some of the stuff I'm reading through the various threads very useful!

Sigh... I had mine in silver now since monday last week, and yesterday I had an accident with my bicycle (not my fault, somebody ran into me without looking). Now the camera is broken... It will take quite some time to get a new silver body.

I support Keith's suggestion for a sticky! I got the OM5 two days ago and think it's the best digital I've ever had. For functionality and image quality! Agree that the menu system could be better, but that's partly because the wealth of settings it provides.

Bummer. I just got the update from Amazon and it's quite a ways out --

"Olympus OM-D E-M5 16MP Live MOS Interchangeable Lens Camera with 3.0-Inch Tilting OLED Touchscreen and 12-50mm Lens (Black)"
Estimated arrival date: July 09, 2012 - August 23, 2012

Sigh. It wouldn't be the worse thing in the world for me to not spend the money right now and just shoot the gear I have. Or even sell some to offset some new stuff!?!?

It might just be the combo of body and lesn you chose.

Heard we're probably only expecting a 1/2 dozen or so TOTAL this month, all combinations, and that supply probably won't stabilize until sometime next month at the soonest.

humm, you guys are makin me very curious, i wonder now where i could try it out 😀

i guess the regular u4/3 adapters work on it to use e.g. M-mount lenses? i wouldn't like to give up on my canon 50/1.2 ...

If you try it out you'll probably buy one. I went into a shop that actually had a demo model and it didn't take long to work out that this is a special little camera! The menu's a pain in the butt and the manual is all over the place ... but the way these things handle is what makes them IMO.
