I remember some of those ads. They were advertised as small and rugged. What photojournalist needs in all kinds of conditions. That is what drew me to my first OM-1 in the mid 70's.Bringing it back, the UPI in the '70's used Olympus OM-1's so there is a history of some working with the OM line, no reason it couldn't happen again.

Goofing with that 21/2 tonight at dinner. It seems to crop to about 28 on the Nex 5. Just perfect for all manner of indoor stuff. Including the ubiquitous Japanese dinner shot..
I do not mind the crop as long as it does not crop the beer

Thanks! It's a Tokina made lens (37 number).
I've also got Komine made 135/2.8 and 28/2.5 Vivitar lenses. All seem to be pretty good. The 135 is a really nice lens.

The best camera is one that still works!
I finally got around to shooting a roll with the OM-3 today. It was interesting that someone mentioned earlier in the thread that they found the OM-3 to be a little slow to use and I guess it could be when comparing it to an OM-2 or OM-4 when using AE on those cameras.
To be able to look at a scene and take a couple of quick spot readings of the highlights and shadows is something new to me and I was surprised at how little time it took! I deliberately chose scenes that would have been tricky to judge with a centre weighted meter and having just developed the film and hung it to dry the exposures look very good to my eye.
This camera has everything for the OM lover IMO. The viewfinder is stunning and the camera generally feels a lot nicer than either of my OM-2's and definitely on a par with my freshly CLA'd OM-1 and the subtle LCD meter readout in the bottom of the finder is perfect. It's just occured to me that I now have an OM-1,2,3 and 4 in my collection so really that's it! I was going to sell the OM-4 because it has metering problems that will require a trip to John Hermanson to rectify but selling a camera that is over a stop and a half out in it's metering doesn't sit well with me so I may have it repaired first then decide if I want to keep it.
Getting the OM-3 body has put me in a 'why stop here' frame of mind and I'll possibly now persue some premium glass to go with the stellar 50mm f1.2 and 28mm f2 Zuikos that I already have. The 40mm f2 is high on my list as is the 21mm f2 ... a lot of money yes but compared to Leica or Zeiss offerings!

yay, another OM-3 lover!
i adore my OM-3, so much so that i've decided that it will be the last 35mm camera that i ever buy. it, backed by the OM System, does everything i need and more! for me it is the perfect 35mm camera.
also, having had the camera for months now i would like to note that i have had none of the battery issues that i had been warned of and had read about when i was researching the camera. my OM-3 really is a gem.

The OM-3 is definitely a keeper, I've been throug many (many) cameras, and this is probably about the very last I'd sell just after I sold my F2 and S2 nikons.., I see those prices raising again in mid-term.
Keith you mentionned in an earlier post that you're thinking about the Leitax possibility to mount on your D700, I've been there, If you want a digitalback for them get a used 5d (mkI) for 700-800$ they pop up from time to time, I'd leave those OM-s alone, also if you want to adapt to other systems in the future m4/3 nex or whatever will evolve (maybe a fullframe nex??...) OM has cheaply available adapters which make those om lenses so valuable imo) also dismounting and mounting can be a pain.
When I owned 3 (yes three) 40/2 lenses a while back I was thinking of converting one to nikon mount, but then I sold 2 off to of them to fellow rff members.
Keith for the lenses if you're looking for the premium OM stuff to upset you're leica friends... (and given that you have the stellar 50/1.2 and 28/2 already look for the following.)
100/2
90/2 macro
50/2 macro
35-80 2.8 zoom (if you like zooms, it doesn't get any better than this one...)
24/2 (I'm selling one off in the classifieds at the moment..)
21/2
50 1.4 late (ok you have the 1.2 so you don't need it..)
35/2 late (I compared my late 35/2 om to the Leica M-Summicron 35 ASPH i owned a while back.. but I'll have to keep the results secret, to not upset anyone here..).
16 3.5 (unique for the size, with 3 built in filters...)
18 3.5 (stellar but rare)
they are all rather expensive, but If you compare what zeiss leica is billing, they're bargains.
of course the 2.8 lenses are equally good and cost much less I've found the 24/2.8 and 35/2.8 to be fantastic so is the 21/3.5, and 28/3.5

Thanks for the advice about the lenses maitani and I think you may be right about the Leitax adapter being a pain in the proverbial because it effectively nobbles the lens for an OM body unless you're prepared to keep jerking around taking the adapter on and off. Maybe there will be a cheap 5D in my future at some stage.
I think a lens I really want is the late version of the 35mm f2 ... I can live without the 40mm. I never took to that focal length with a rangefinder after all!
And .... I have to say you have made an RFFer downunder very, very happy! The OM-3 has now commandeered use of the Luigi grip case over the OM-1 which has been living in it for some time but got evicted by the latest edition to the family!

the 40/2 is a good lens, it's just pricey.
Im glad youre enjoying the one I owned JSU; it really does have a nice look. Excellent for full body portraits; I might add. My only issue with it was that I still didn't have a lens for my M2 at the time. In a perfect world I would have kept it.

and though prices remain exceptionally strong, I really do want a 21/3.5; I just can't swing the price of an SA =/

I just received my ugly grade Zuiko 100/2.8 from KEH. I didn't go over it with a fine tooth comb, but it looks clean. Here is a quick test shot on a Canon 10D with a Big_IS chipped adapter. I'm not sure if I need to fine tune the focus confirmation or focus is slightly off because it's hand held and DoF should be around 1/4 to 1/3 inch. Shot at f2.8.
Can't wait to use it on the OM2s at an airshow this weekend.

to be fair tests have been done on nex7
closeup
the not very highly regarded zuiko was sharper wide open, with noticably less flare (which is a problem of the M-cron asph) and smoother round bokeh, the cron is rather harsh in this area , from 2.8 - 5.6 they are equally sharp, I feel the the cron took a close lead at F8 but we're splitting hairs.
I general the cron, being a terrific lens, to me, it's not worth the money, If I'd had an M9 I'd probably own one anyway, but I sold my copy because the zuiko has all I need for 1/10 of the price.
---
nerd mode off, keith those are nice shots, amazing how the 50 1.2 sharpens up at f2, btw does the 50 1.2 has an intermediate step between f1.2 and f2 or does it jump directly to f2 just like my 55?...
