OMG - Noctilux 0.95 just arrived!

Sample Shots Up

Sample Shots Up

Ok, here are a few sample shots. These were NOT intended to be artistic in any way, so if you don't like how the shot was framed, sorry....just trying to get samples for folks to see. These were all shot with available light at f/0.95 with one exception, I mounted an SF58 to the camera and did a quick-shot of the box the Noctilux arrived in. All were shot with the new Noctilux 50mm f/0.95 mounted on the Leica M9. As these files are huge, they will be available for download for 5 days, then the links will expire. I put some small jpegs here and a short description so you know what you're downloading before starting to download the big-un. Links to the files are below each photo. Figured for the obligatory flower photo I'd shoot something a tad different, but you got your flower photo nonetheless. 🙂

Hopefully shows a little of what everyone wants to see regarding the lens. Will try to do a couple low-light shots tonight as well.

Conditions:
When: These were shot this morning except for the desk and box which were shot last night.

Light: Today it is very very overcast here in Florida so the outdoor light is dim due to cloud cover.

All were shot at f/0.95 unless I bumped something and didn't realize it.

Interesting. Wide aperture bokeh quite silky but is the smaller aperture bokeh not as smooth? I can't do anything with dng's to check.

Yes,

Both Nocts have a very different look, as many have pointed out. The f1.0 bokeh has its unique fingerprint, easily identified and many have used this particular characteristic to excellent use. The 0.95's bokeh is quite different. It's especially creamy, smooth and more neutral....almost more more so than most any other lens, and resolving power on focused subject is quite a bot greater with the 0.95 than the f1.0. Two very different lenses. I say having both is whats required....that is when one (like myself) wins the lottery! 🙂

From my previous experience and testing of the f1.0 with the VC Nokton f1.1, and after seeing both these and other posted images from the new 0.95..in some (read: " some, not all") ways the f1.1 is sort of in the middle. It's resolving power especially in the more central area of the frame betters the f1.0 but not to the degree of the 0.95...and its bokeh (the f1.1) is more neutral like the the 0.95...but no wheres in the abundence that the 0.95 is capable of from what I see in posted images. In fact the degree of softness from the Nokton f1.1 in the out of focus areas is a bit less than the f1.0...but I believe that this is caused by the Nokton putting the subject at the very front of the depth of field while the f1.0 puts the subject focused on more in the middle or towards the rear (of the depth of feild). This has a most pronouced effect of how soft the out of focus areas are behind the subect. As for spectacular highlights and "light" such as street lamps and how they are renderied as soft and round, as oposed to eliptical, the f1.0 has it over the f1.1 and I suppose the 0.95 does every bit as good as the f1.0, if not better.

Thank you for posting these images of the 0.95....it's very much appreciated!

No problem at all. I'll try to get some low-light ones up for everyone after it gets dark tonight.

This next week will be on a trip and will shoot some more stuff with it and post it somewhere if you guys want to see any more of what comes out of this lens/camera combo just street-walking.

Only packing the Noctilux, a 28mm, a few extra SD cards and a lightweight tripod. Nothing else. I'm curious to see if I'm ok without the big-pack of stuff I normally lug along or if I can force myself to get a little more creative with just that. No flash, and no pack of lenses.

Will be an interesting experiment as usually I lug EVERYTHING I might think I'd ever need including an extra camera just in case.

🙂

I like these better than the Nokton 1.1, but not as much as the last f1.0 I had.

To me that's the coolest thing about photography, you can take 100 people, put them all in the same room with whatever camera they like and wind up with 100 totally different views and perspectives on what you'd think was the exact same subject as well as 100 different opinions on what works best or is each photographer's favorite tool. Recently we went and shot photos of a theatre from the back-stage perspective and there were folks with $100 point and shoots to $30,000 + rigs. Everyone had what they thought worked for them and we got photos of things out of the shoot the theatre folks didn't even know were there! Every camera, every lens gives a different look and even the 2 of the same make/model lenses give different looks depending on the subject.

The f/1 is a BEAUTIFUL lens (got one of those as well) no argument!

Thanks a lot for posting these example photos ! 🙂 I am really looking forward seeing some night street shots taken with that lens. Having a f/1.0 myself I am very interested how the 0.95 ASPH performs.

Have fun at your trip and enjoy your new lens !

Cheers,

Gabor

How lovely is this - a real person with a fabulous combination of camera and lens who's generously sharing with the rest of us. Many thanks to Drew and I look forward to seeing more results.
