The one lens that I haven't seen mentioned here is the Canon 35 mm 2.8. It is relatively low contrast, but my example is sharp and the size and handling are great. In 50 mm, don't overlook the Canon 1.8. Both are likely to be available in your budget.

As much as i'd want to have one Summicron or -lux, i just can't pay for it.
I have made a deal of a CV 35/2.5 PII with shade that is within my original budget and i think i can begin with this.
I was offered an Ultron 35/1.7 also, but the owner said it was soft (he had 2 of them) and he could not figure out what caused it, so i passed as it was a bit high prized anyway.
