i have pse8 for mac with acr plugin...is this SUPPOSED to be able to open g1 raw files?
because if it is i can't seem to figure it out.
and if it isn't, is there something i can add to pse8 that will open g1 raw files?
it's time i stopped shooting jpegs on the g1.
(this set up works great on the rd1 raw files btw)

Hi Joe. I am not using PSE, but you might be the victim of how Adobe is aligning Camera Raw with the various versions of Photoshop. While Lightroom is kept up to date with respect to different raw formats, Photoshop CS3 is not compatible with the latest few generations of Camera Raw - to get that compatibility you need to update to CS4. It may be time to consider getting Lightroom. It is extremely capable and interfaces nicely with other programs by generating TIF files that are handed off to the other applications.

Kirk

Joe,
I use Lightzone which not only opens .RW2 files, but is also very good for most post processing. It also only costs a fraction of what PS does...

Adobe isn't keeping older versions of PS current, I had the same issue with Canon G10 raw files and CS3. The work around is using the Adobe DNG converter. It's free and works well. Just run the raws through that, then open the DNGs in ACR. Never thought I'd be talking in so many acronyms.

Isn't PSE8 the latest version for OSX? It should be able to open the RAW files - my PSE6 for OSX works OK.
Do you have the latest updates for PSE and the plug in?
My PSE also came with Bridge CS3 - from memory I think it was a free download for PSE6. The G1 files are fully visible from Bridge CS3, so I doubt it's an issue with RW2 files not being supported by Adobe.
It's worth getting it working for if you want to make any intensive editing, but for me it's now little-used as I've moved over to Lightroom.

Tried that. Didn't work with the G1 Raw files. Adobe DNG converter produced a DNG file but it could not be opened by any program.
But it did work for the files shot with a lens mounted via the leica-m adaptor because here no lens correction is applied.
Lightroom 2 is able to read the G1 Raw files.

The DNG file couldn't be opened with Adobe Camera Raw? Something is wrong. I'm not familiar with G1 files, but that is pretty frustrating. What about the software that is supplied with the camera? Or is that not worth messing with.
As for Bridge, just because the files are viewable in Bridge doesn't mean they are supported by ACR. I've seen just that with the G10 files and 5DII files and CS3. You should make sure you have the most current Camera Raw plugin the software allows, but the most current one of all is only for CS4 and Lightroom. Adobe Jerks.

Just checked the Adobe site, PSE 8 does support the G1 files. So you should make sure you have the current Camera Raw plug in and that it is installed correctly. Here is the Link to the download page. If the plugin is put into the wrong folder it won't work.
The current version is camera raw 5.6.

No, sorry. I don't have Elements and going by what it says on the site the location for these plugins differs from CS4. There is a read me file with it that should walk you through it, get it from the horse's mouth, or server as the case may be. Hope it works for you, these issues can make you crazy.

The G1 .RW2 files open up in Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac just fine. I do not remember downloading any patches, but I have installed any Adobe updates for it.

not for me, not at all.
i have been 'playing' over the last few days at trying to get it to work but nothing has changed.
i wonder if i deleted pse8 and re-loaded it if that might help?

it works!
i can open a g1 raw file on pse8 directly but not from bridge.
i can open the rd1 raw files from bridge though.
not sure why the difference.

Watch what happens with files downloaded from the camera from this point forward. You may notice that they will open from Bridge, where the earlier files do not. I had that happen, maybe that's how it will go for you. Glad it is working for you, not shooting raw files makes a great camera pretty average.
