I just found THIS ARTICLE about 'lambic' and it has gotten me very interested.. unfortunately, I can't exactly walk into a local tavern and experience it myself

does anyone here know anything about the stuff?

Great stuff! Sheesh, even here in deepest, darkest Ohio I can buy it. 🙂
Tart, almost a sour flavor. But very good.

Well poor Brett lives up in Miller-land.

They probably don't allow real beer there. 🙂

Lambic is fine stuff - I just am not a fan of the Belgian propensity to mix in fruit flavorings with it.

Berliner Weiss is a similar "sour" beer that is "flavored with fruit, BTW.

Hey now, we've got lots of really great beer up here. Come to Madison and I'll treat you to a exquisite cask conditioned pale ale at one of our brew pubs.

Brett, any good adult beverage store should have a couple of the belgan lambics. The raspberry flavored ones are my favorite.

Timely post, Brett. My better-half brought home a big bottle of Affligem beer. It's good <hic!>.

I've had a couple of Belgian beers that have a "spice." It's almost a licorice-flavor. Everytime I taste it, I can't put my finger (tongue) on it. It makes me drink more, because I try to figure out what it is.

alright.. I didn't make it to the liquor store in time.. they close at 9pm around here.. but this will give me something to check out at noon tomorrow 🙂

Mmmm.. most belgian beers are delish. That country sure knows how to brew it's stuff 🙂

Personally, my favourite, is De Verboten Vrucht (The Forbidden Fruit or in French 'La Fruit Defendu') - a high alcohol strong beer but you'd never know it.. fabulous and one of the better beers out of the Hoegarrden brewery.

The fruity lambics are good too.. just that they tend, to me, to be a bit too tart for my liking.

Cheers.. hmmmm.. cheers 🙂

Mmmm, I haven't had a good lambic in ages. I sense a trip to the store in my very near future.

I will say when I was in Milwaukee on business once, I took the tour of the Miller brewery. They gave out samples at the end (three nice large pours, I might add) and the taste was vastly different than the Miller brews you get at the supermarket or the local drinking establishment. It actually tasted like real beer.

Still, I think Boddington's is my favorite, beating out Guiness by a hair followed by just about any Belgian brews I can get my hands on.

It is indeed a heavy responsibility to take on the cask (er...I mean task) of ensuring that no spice will only be tasted twice, or thrice or.... 😱

Better to err on the side of caution and ensure that you have a suitably large sample from which to base your opinion. 😀

Never cared for a fruit-flavored beer. I prefer Belgians, but a nice Trappist Ale, such as Chimay, makes me happy. Guinness is always a favorite, Murphy's stout is fine as well. I like Negra Modelo, from Mexico, and when I was in the Philippines, I partook of San Miguel with gusto. Swan Lager was a fine beer when I was in Australia (not Emu, for God's sake). A micro-brew Oatmeal Stout is a good thing indeed, and for my daily brew, two bottles of Yuengling down the hatch each and ever night - for my constitution.

Here's How!

Star-anise. Very much like licorise (made from anise, another plant entirely). The flavor is most often described as 'nearly licorice' and it is used in many Belgian beers.

Chimay is nice.

I'm now a fan of the Oomergang Brewery up in Cooperstown, NY. Formerly indy, it is now owned by Duval - but let to stew its own brew.

They have this one deep rich cask ale called "Three Philosphers"

Suffice to say it clocks in at 9.5% and has been known to make even the dumbest dolt in town sound like Plato after a 3/4 litre or two!

Never heard of it, but will check it out, thanks! I prefer ales to lagers, but my everyday beer is strangely a lager.

When I was in the Corps, friends from the east coast introduced me to Little Kings and Gennessee Cream Ale. I don't remember much after that, except waking up in the parking lot, handcuffed to my bed, in the First Sergeant's parking space. I must have had a good time.

Never heard of Little Kings. Genny remains a small sized industrial brewer in upstate NY. Cream is nice, they have an "upscale" version call 12-horse.

Except for my Philosophers I don't drink much beer anymore (usually wine instead) - but usually buy local micor brews whereever I am.

Outside of NY you're not likely to find the Philosphers. but I can get the basic Oomergang (8.5%) out in Tucson - so it has wide distribution.

BTW: both are "dated" and can be laid down like wine.

as drunk as I ever got in college (and after), I don't remember passing out

altho there was the time I woke up in a rather attractive girl's dorm room once.. not quite sure how I got there.. but she really didn't want me to leave 😀

That's the problem with these slackers - no dedication. No pain, no pain.

Yeah, yeah, "Dear Penthouse Forum, I never thought I'd be writing this but..."

I woke up in someone's yard, covered in leaves. The guy who owned the house said I seemed harmless at the time, although apparently I thought I was Robert Frost, and had loudly shouted that both paths should be ignored - the key to wisdom was to hide in the ditch and cover oneself in dead leaves, twigs, and branches, which I then proceeded to do.

I used to think of Little Kings Cream Ale as a NY beer, not sure why. Brewed by Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Co in Cincinatti. Haven't had it since 1979.

That sounds as good as the time I was home on leave from the Army and attending a family friend's daughters wedding. Her brother, home on leave from the Corps, and I tied one on the night before.

It is an interesting experiance to try and talk an all too happy Marine out of GTA when some idiot left the keys in his Porsche 911... 😱 Suffice it to say I succeeded so we were both able to attend his sisters wedding the next day.

Are they still around? It's always nice to hear of one of the "old timers" surviving. Such as the Yeunling (sp?) you spoke of earlier.

Once in a while these "survivors" catch a "vougue" such as Rolling Rock did in NYC in the 1980's and get a new lease on life.

Here, nowadays, with so many types of folks living in NYC there are so many brews available that it gets harder and harder to go into a deli and say - "I've had them all!"

But I keep trying! 😀
