OT: DSLR help

Ok, I guess I know even less about the Oly line up than I thought I did. What mount do the Oly DSLRs have? How do you use a Contax 45/2.8 with your E-1? Do you mean a C/Y mount lens? Are you using some sort of adapter?

I guess I'll now have to go lookup on the E-1 also. I was trying to simplify things by elimination. It's only getting more complex! I think I have eliminated one camera and another springs up to take its place. I might just go into a shop and ask them to put them all on the counter, close my eyes and pick one. But then I'm not researching for myself, so I want to be more sincere about it.

Oly E-1 has a FourThirds mount. However there are adapters availible to use (stop down metered and full infinity withough glass), Contax/Yashica (aka RTS), Minolta MD, Nikon F, M42, Olympus OM (free with a call in the USA), among others. Kind of nice, and it lets you expirement with inexpensive lens line ups, or pick up specialized lenses. Heck, I just spent $205 for a split prism with a hi-lux screen (extra bright and prism does not black out even at F/22). In other words, an E-1 can lead to a very odd form of GAS. I am trying to justify a Planar 85/1.4 for it right now... and having trouble... Cameraquest sells some adapters (have one, very nice), and some polish company is also making them (cheaper, bought I will be supporting Gandy, he is helpful, and lives here in California).

The Olympus E-1 is whatever camera you want it to be... hmm... right now one is in my camera case (alongwith a Contax G1 and G2 and 11 lenses... way too much GAS) and one has my Planar 50/1.4 on it. I have been trying to track my bird as he does his back and forth movements, quick and erratic, at f/.1.4. Kinda scary fast moving little guy, and no DoF at 5', with an equivelent focal length of 100mm. Fun though.

I can vouch for the lenses I have, as well. I have among the Zuiko Digitals: 11-22/2.8-3.5 (awesome, no vingetting, slight distortion gove by f/4), 14-54/2.8-3.5 (sharp and almost perfect jack of all trades), 50/2 (nice macro, painfully sharp portrait lens), 50-200/2.8-3.5 (good for action, sharp and contrasty). Remember, 2x crop to compare to 35mm. However, also not, note an actual crop, the lenses are made for this format, and this pays dividends in quality.

Welcome to the world of confussion, I mean DSLRs:)

OT: any *ist DL users?

OT: any *ist DL users?

there is a promo now to get $200 off an *ist if you buy a printer with it as well, getting the cost down below $400 or so with a basic lens. Any *ist DL users here?

I like that it is small and easy to use old lenses on. The only other DSLRs I'd go for would be a Canon 350XT (next price drop or so) or maybe that Fuji with the Velvia film mode.

Don't want or need a "pro" model.

At the 20D level, I would say the equiv is D70s, *istD and Minolta 7D.
The entry level is Nikon D50, Canon 350D/XT, *istDL and Minolta 5D. Out of the entry level list, I would suggest the 350D simply because it's the most bang for the buck right now. It might not apply in a couple of months, but as of right now, it's the best deal.

The only digicam I'd recommend right now, is one of the Panasonic FZ series. GeneW can tell you about his.

I had an *ist DL and to this day i regret that I sold it! It was just the right size (unlike the 350D!), had GREAT lenses and was very responsive, not to mention I got reasonably good photos out of it with the 6 lenses I had. It would be a fantastic newbie camera kit IMHO! YMMV

As a matter of fact, I just bought an *ist DL a few hours ago. It is my first DSLR. I liked it the best of all the entry level DSLRs that I sampled. It handles like a film camera. It's small but hefty and the controls should be intuitive for anyone who has used a film SLR. The VF is also brighter than the D50, Oly E-500 or Rebel XT, IMO. That was important to me.

I had been saving my money and I was prepared to pay more for the D50 but the *ist DL won me over. I guess I can put the unused cash toward lenses. One thing I am discovering is that DSLRs respond well to a high-speed memory card. Using a "regular" card results in slow read/write times.

I never thought I would see the day....I have "gone digital" and I like it (so far):) .

He he! Beware LBA! The Pentax folks don't suffer from GAS, they suffer from LBA!

LBA = Lens Buying Addiction!

cool

cool

would you mind letting me know what vendor you used? Did you do the printer/cam bundle, or just camera? Thanks.

Well, I feel kind of sheepish admitting this...but I bought the *ist DL at big-box retailer Circuit City. I stopped there after work to buy a Bruce Springsteen CD for my wife, saw that they had the camera in stock, and bought one. Otherwise I would have ordered one from Amazon and saved about $20.

I bought the camera & 18-55 kit lens. No printer, nor did I see one offered.

No complaints about Circuit City but it was only my second transaction with them (or third, if you count the Springsteen CD) so I don't have much experience.

PS - can anyone tell me how to repair the RFF gallery link in my signature?

that's fine

I bought one of my digicams there. You may be eligible for the $100 rebate going on now.

Acoording to Pentax's own website and rebate claim forms, buyers of the *ist DL body and lens are indeed eligible for the $100 rebate. Kit buyers simply need to cut the UPC code from the camera body box within the kit package and mail that with the rebate form.

By the way the Oly E-500 two lens kit is also subject to a $100 rebate and represents another screaming good deal, IMO.

Yes, the rebate is on the body. That makes the DL (body only) $339 - very tempting.

Go to edit signature and cut and paste this in place of what you see there. It should work:
