OT: My essay on the Olympus Stylus Epic

Thanks for posting your review and the selection of other links on the epic... I'm getting some great reading in this morning 🙂.

Excellent piece -- good reading! You've definitely caught the pluses and minuses of this amazing little camera. It always pains me to think how good this camera *could* be if it had featured an aperture-priority mode.

Good review and cute kid.

I use sensia 100 in my epic, and have had no complaints in terms of sharpness. My only significant complaint is the need to disable the flash every time it powers up.

Interesting theory on the low-light aperture issue, I will have to go back over my slides and see if the low-light sunset/sunrise shots I've taken indicate wide-open aperture as your cited data suggests.

I have one of these. Its a winner for sure but we'll see how it stacks up as the ultimate pocket camera against the Rollei 35 that will soon arrive at my door.

Attached is one taken with the Epic on a recent fishing trip - Fuji NPH, handheld, on the boat. I can see the fishing line through the eye holes on the big scan.

Mike,

Very nice shot. That sure does not look like the cam set itself to wide-open, even at sunset.

I don't think so either. Who knows what goes on in its little "brain". That's why I think the Rollei 35 will suit me better, maybe except for fill flash. It requires an external flash which mounts on the bottom, meaning you use the camera upsidedown!

my comment about sunrise/sunset light referenced to shooting at this time - but in the opposite direction of the actual the sunrise / sunset....shooting into the sunset/rise is certainly a higher light value... but if you turned 180 degrees the light would be very low causing wide open shooting.....Dan
