Our Thailand Trip

The girlfriend and I went for a Thailand trip during the Chinese New Year.

Some photos by the R-D1s here. I'll keep updating them as I arrange along.

[The Early Bus] - We booked the earliest flight so that we could arrive before noon. The price was that we had to get up at 4:30am to get the early bus.

[Reflection] - There was an elevator at the boarding gate. I took this shot before joining the line.

[Flowers in South East] - You can observe the environment of an area, and realize their use of color in their culture.

[Traffic in Bangkok] - is always quite bad during 5pm~8pm. I looked out from the taxi's rear window and felt really, really tired by the endless traffic jam.

[Fast & Furious: Bangkok Drift] - This one is taken with the GRD2. Since I found many R-D1 users also love the GRD2 (and TC-1 maybe), I'll just add this shot here too.

Before visiting the Floating Market, we dropped by a coconut sugar factory.

[Steaming] - I wish I've had bought 10 packs of coconut sugar then.... Delicious!

[The Dog at the Factory] - I pressed the shutter as it walked by me. Looks a bit moody.

If I were not myself, I would've guessed it's the Nokton 35/1.2, for it does look close in these two shots you mentioned.

The lens was the Dallmeyer Super-Six 1¾in/f1.9. It's been on my R-D1s for more than one month now. One of those old lenses that perform bad when facing the light, but really have their own characters in appropriate situations.

I don't remember ever seeing coconum sugar. Thanks for that photo. In Vietnam street vendors used to sell a sugar cane drink in the summer. I never had that but did often enjoy the iced coconut milk. That sure was good.

It's a mystery to me how I survived 4 years there drinking iced drinks since they seldom boiled the water they used to make ice. The only time I didn't really wonder was during time I spent in Can Tho. There, the bars that catered to GI's didn't refrigerate the 33 beer. They just poured it over ice. It took a while to get used to that, and then to undiluted beer when I got back to Saigon.

On the third day we visited the Floating Market. It's a canal filled with boats, both sellers and buyers, while most of the latter are actually just tourist nowadays.

[Layers] - There are mainly three areas in the Floating Market: the water, the sidewlk, and the shops. The difference of height and angle produces many interesting scenes.

[Selling Water in the Water] - In fact it's not ironical at all. 😛

[Under the Bridge] - I love Red Hot Chili Peppers.

[Traffic Jam in the Canal0 - There were simply too many boats in the canal. They often had to use the hands to push their way out.

ah-ha! now i know why you've been neglecting your Noctilux Diary (just when i need it most!).

but the Dalimeyer does look quite sweet. old lenses can be such a treat, especially with digital.

Hi cam, please don't worry. I just scanned two rolls of B/W last weekend, and sent one roll of slide to development, all three with the Noctilux. There will be new photos in the Noctilux Diary thread very soon.

(Why do you need the Noctilux Diary thread lately?)

On film, I prefer the Noctilux over the Dallmeyer, but on the R-D1s it's kind of the other way round. I don't know why, but it's great to have one lens for film and one for digital. Also, on film, the Dallmeyer vignettes worse than the Noctilux anyway.

Old lenses can be a problem for shots that need to be technically correct, but that's not what I'm after, and I just love the flavor. Also, the details are actually better than most people would imagine.
