Over 50,000 cameras...and many were rangefinders!

With all the talk of digital domination, death of film, decline in the popularity of real cameras, etc, I'd like to share what I think is an interesting statistic with this group.

I've completed my annual review of activity for "The Light Seal Project", and last year the project sold enough genuine professional grade material to re-seal over 50,000 cameras. I have been told the “project” has become the world’s largest seller of camera light seal material, and I believe that is actually true. Even more interesting to me is activity for the project was up by over 10%. This year has brought some challenges to the project: the cost of foam has risen dramatically (and honestly the weakness of the dollar works against me on that), the cost of postage has increased, the cost of paper and toner has increased, I had to buy another printer as the original one became less dependable, I’ve had some other demands on my time, and even the cost of bamboo and the electricity for the machine that makes the little tools has increased. However, I have just renewed the contract for foam production, and I have decided to continue for at least another year with the same pricing that was set in place when the project was started. Since the project will be operating on a much slimmer margin of error, I’m depending on demand remaining strong, and I’ll be exploring some expense reductions. Even though US Postal rates have increased, I've also decided to continue with free shipping inside the US and I am continuing to subsidize the cost of shipping anywhere else in the world.

Additionally, I'm going to take a moment to thank each and every member and guest here who has purchased a kit for helping the "project" continue and to develop a little surplus which will be used to fund other camera "projects"...one of which will be named before the end of Spring. Whether in the USA, the UK, Greece, Latvia, Mexico, Brazil, the FSU, Italy, France, Canada, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Finland, or anywhere else, I am truly thankful for your support, your suggestions and your continued friendship. So as you need light seal material, please keep me in mind…As most of you know. I’m “Interslice” on E-Bay.

Wow! 50,000 cameras! I have used your kits to re-seal a Ricoh 500G and two Canonet GIII QL17's and QL 19 plus a Vivitar 35ES, so thats 5 rangefinders! That's 0.001% of the total (I think!)

Jon, your kits are invaluable. I'd rather see a moderate increase in price that see your wonderful service disappear.

Thanks for helping to bring so many cameras back to life!

I would like to thank *YOU* for making these kits available at a reasonable cost and with such explicit instructions!

It was *SO* much easier getting the kit from you than it would have been chasing down the foam stuff, cutting it to shape, etc. I know your project has put lots of vintage cameras back into service! 🙂

I thought this thread was about Bill Mattock's camera collection!

Jon, seriously, thank you for your assistance to me and I am sure many others on RFF. As Silva Lining said above, competitive pressure permitting, I would rather see a price increase rather than ceasing production. Good luck for another good year.

Yes, I think 50,000+ is sort of amazing...especially with what is happening today. Thanks very much for the good wishes and kind thoughts! Sometimes I forget to mention my partner in Germany. His name is Stefan and his ID is camerasolution. I think you will find dealing with him very pleasant and fun...and he speaks German much better than I ever will.

Jon,

I think a lot of people can thank you, and the specialized kits that you make available for keeping these cameras going.

And for me, Thankyou.

Brian Sweeney, another Happy Customer.

I'm a satisfied customer, too. Those PDF tutorials are great, Jon. I think you should start charging $2 for postage.

Jon: Yes, a big thanks to you. And it's a good reminder that I need to order another kit or two since (aaargh!) I don't know where the first one got to!

Just a quick question... when digital does take over from film, will you be keeping the price of the Digital Foam Kits about the same? 😉

Thanks! Anytime you need one, please let me know. I can include a small piece of string to tie around your finger, if needed...or fanger, as we say here in Texas.

No, the digital kits will be vastly more expensive. I'm hoping that by the time digital does finally take film over, the inflation factor alone will have pushed the cost of a seal kit to about a grand. Or two. Besides, if the value of the dollar continues its trip down the slippery slope, I'll be having to apply for long-term financing on each foam order.

John,

Just to add my thanks from the UK. I have now restored 7 Yashica G series, 4 Oly SP 35, 2 Minolta, 2 Ricoh, 2 Nikon and several other cameras that I forget.

Keep up the good work, and don't worry about a modest increase in the cost of your kits - they will still be great value!

Jon,
Tack on a QL17 GIII, a Yashica GSN, a Konica S2, and a Mamiya ZM... Wait, forget that last one. I didn't say that. 🙂

I raise my Arnold Palmer to you! Oh, and I agree with others. I would't be put off if you charged a little more. Seeing as I paid less than it costs me for lunch up here, and I've resealed 4 cameras thus far, with material to do many, many more, the value is there.

Jon, I still have some scraps left from the kit I bought from you on the evil site. You
and Luigi are the two straight-up guys there. I remember the detail you went into
making certain things went smoothly. For someone who is all thumbs, all tutorials
are appreciated. It's a comfort knowing I can reach you here without having to go
back to...you know...

Regards,

Fred

What can I say that hasn't been already said ?

My sincere thanks for your fabulous kits, your help, your friendly emails and of course, the best ad's ever seen on RFF 😀

Gracias Jon !!!
