Does anyone know where I can get the software for this scanner?
I've heard that there is both a Mac and PC version

thanks

There is no Mac version and there is no support for the software. It will only run on Windows XP and if you have a computer less than about six years old, it will not be compatible with the USB ports on your machine. The only way I was able to get my Pakon setup working was by installing a specific Belkin USB card into my desktop PC. PM me for details.

Good grief. I'll PM you.

Thanks

I had this running on my Mac Pro 1,1 (4 core 2.66Ghz) running Windows XP SP3 on its own drive. I've also managed to install it on an old Dell Latitude 6000 laptop. It's better to have a dedicated machine for this anyway because it wants an unpartitioned N drive to buffer the bitstream. That said, my F235 came with a Windows 2000 host machine.

The USB issue for me was that in addition to doing the standard from-CD install, Windows needed to pull a driver from the mother ship over the internet.

Dante, have you seen any sign of life from AES (or anybody) regarding support for these scanners since we last talked about it in 2009?

I'm awaiting some answers from two companies regarding the bw film issue and the 135 Plus.
I'll fill you guys in once I know more.

Harry, any update on the B&W film issue from those two companies? I recently acquired a f135 and am curios about B&W?

Actually yes. I spoke to the seller and he swore up and down that the 135 plus could scan b/w film.
But I was skeptical after all of the research I had done and the feedback I had received.

Yesterday I found an actual PDF flyer from Pakon that lists the 135, 235 and 335. It shows clearly that the 135 will not scan b/w film, but the 235 and 335 will.

So, now I'm investigating a 235 or 335. The nice thing about the 335 is that it uses an LED light source and scans at 16bit. The 235 uses a halogen bulb and scans at 14 bit. But the 335 is quite pricey.

F135 Plus Can Scan B&W

F135 Plus Can Scan B&W

Harry,

I've taken possession of an F135 Plus in the last week and can confirm that it will scan traditional B&W film. I just scanned a 6 frame strip of TMY 400 without problems using the Pakon PSI software. Just thought you might like to know. I will continue testing various films and strip lengths and report back.

BTW.. I'm a big fan of that movie as well.. "The Third Man"...

I just saw this thread. I have an f235 and remember it was quite a chore getting the software and configuring a pc to make it work.

I was able to buy from AES but they made me open a commercial account first. They were real nice and I still have their emails around.

It would not surprise me if they don't sell the psi software anymore.

The odd thing is I can occasionally burn the PaKon cd or get the index print to work and then those features won't work again for months. Too lazy to figure out why though.

I save all my scans as tiff's so that's all I really need. Great machine BTW.

someone could send me the last firmware and setup, please? My macbook retina doesn't have a cd-rom reader and can't install it. For the F-135 PLUS.

Thanks!!!

There is a Pakon support group on Facebook that you can join if you are a FB user; someone there has very kindly made available the latest version of the Pakon software as a free download available to all group members- plus there is a HUGE amount of support for all issues that can come up with these scanners since the group has a couple of hundred or so users, many of whom are very knowledgeable.

Bump.

I now have a Pakon F135 Plus. The Pakon software installs pretty easily on a vintage Win XP laptop. The Pakan scans fine, just as advertised 2000x3000, saving as TIFF of JPEG. Since it's Win XP, I don't want to connect the computer to the network. Therefore, I'm saving results to a USB thumb drive to transfer scans to my production system.

A big thank you to Dante Stella for his writeups that convinced me.

The Pakon was virtually undiscovered a few years ago, and not well understood after it was. The Pakon fb changed all that, including the market price. :)

I bought three at a little over $200 four & 1/2 years ago. In spite of its ancient OS it’s still the best scanner for 135, other than the highest end Noritsu or Frontiers. Tried a lower end Noritsu that promised more resolution, sent it back.

Not sure I’d be shooting film today if it didn’t exist.
