Paris - Any Recommendations?

Hey all!

I've flown out to Paris for a week, and I'm hitting the streets hard with my new M6 (not literally, obviously😉)

Does anyone have any favorite places in the city? I'm generally just wondering around aimlessly enjoying the sights sounds and smells, but I'm open to suggestion if you've got any advice!

Already had one of my best days of shooting for a LONG time! And I have another 5 days left! Any ideas?

I was there in October and it was the most photogenic place I've ever been. Montmartre is great, but so is le Marais, Ile St. Louis, and Ile de la Cite. Walk up and down the banks of the Seine for a little while. The most disappointing place I went was Champs Elysee. Unless you want to shop for expensive designer crap, you might as well skip it...except the Arc de Triomphe was much more impressive up close than I was expecting. I liked the outside of the Louvre better than the inside (blasphemy, I suppose). The inside of the Musee d'Orsay was awesome though. Walk from the Louvre through Tuilleries Garden. Eiffel Tower is cool, but the view from levels 1 and 2 is better than from the top. Place de la Concorde, Luxembourg Gardens, Notre Dame, Place des Vosgues, Palais Royale, the Latin Quarter...It's hard to find a place in Paris where you will run out of photo ops. Have fun!

Hi Matteaton,
beware the Musee d'Orsay ... there are tons of turists taking long detailed movie with their video camera of each impressionistic painting ...
the rest is great ... enjoy the parks (Luxembourg, Tuilleries...) the Marais Arrondissment, the Latin Quarter and the Maison Europeen de la Photography.

street market on rue Mouffetard. Not sure what days the market is going. I think it's best to visit in the morning. If I remember correctly it is near St-Denis area. It feels like being in the French countryside.

Sainte Chapelle (4, boulevard du Palais, 75001 Paris), truly the greatest wonder of Gothic architecture in existence. Light embodied in glass. I have never seen a photo that does it justice, so good luck with yours. 🙂

Great places have already been mentioned, but if you like a restful little square with impromptu entertainment -- mimes, musicians, and the like, try Place de Vosges.

If only I had the cash to travel around! I blew all my money on cameras and film! Silly me! 😉 Paris will have to do for now!

I think I've been to Rouen before though. Travelled around France quite a bit as a kid.

I'm going to check out Montmartre tomorrow, sounds like a place I'd enjoy. And when I get home and all the films are souped I'll have to subscribe so I can start a gallery and show you all what I've been up to!

I liked the day I spent out at La Defense. Other-worldly modern sort of Not-Paris, but a nice break from the riverside. The Jardin des Plantes is interesting. I go every other year or so, because I think it's ALL amazing!

I've heard that the view from the bell tower of Notre Dame is pretty cool, and thar be gargoyles up there. I didn't get a chance go up it when I was there a month ago, wish I had.

Don't forget that HCB has a "decisive moment" photo of a couple kissing up there.

Right! I forget to mention it. I spent there a couple of hours on monday in the afternoon (round the end of the working day) and it's a fantastic place to take photos (with some wide lens) ... a different but interesting view of modern Paris.

Some ideas--Le Marais is a great old area for architecture, shop windows, etc. You might be attracted to the flea markets; some of the wares are very photogenic. I liked to take photos of fresh fish on ice somewhere on the left bank. Luxembourg Garden is beautiful around sunset. Also, take the earliest possible day train to Giverny and photograph Monet's gardens before the tourist buses get there.
